Book excerpt: Devices built from three-dimensional nanoarchitectures offer a number of advantages over those based on thin-film technology, such as larger surface area to enhance the sensitivity of sensors, to collect more sunlight to improve the efficiency of solar cells, and to supply higher density emitters for increased resolution in flat panel displays. Three-dimensional nanoscale assembly has already been used to generate many prototypes of devices and sensors, including piezoelectric nanogenerators based on ZnO nanowire arrays, photovoltaic devices based on silicon nanowire array p-n junctions, and highly sensitive gas sensors based on metal oxide nanowire arrays among others. Three-Dimensional Nanoarchitectures: Designing Next-Generation Devices describes state-of-the-art synthesis, integration, and design strategies used to create three-dimensional nanoarchitectures for functional nanodevice applications. With a focus on synthesis and fabrication methods for three-dimensional nanostructure assembly and construction, coverage includes resonators, nanophotonics, sensors, supercapacitors, solar cells, and more. This book is an essential reference for a broad audience of researchers in materials science, chemistry, physics, and electrical engineering who want the latest information on synthesis routes and assembly methods. Schematics of device integration and mechanisms as well as plots of measurement data are included.

Book Three Dimensional Nanoarchitectures by Atomic Layer Deposition for Energy related Applications

Download or read book Three Dimensional Nanoarchitectures by Atomic Layer Deposition for Energy related Applications written by Zhaodong Li and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a cyclic, multi-step thin film chemical vapor deposition process based on sequential self-limiting surface reactions. It has been widely applied for synthesizing various three dimensional (3D) nanoscale morphologies. Recently, based on ALD process, a surface-reaction-limited pulsed chemical vapor deposition (SPCVD) technique was developed for 3D hierarchical branched nanowire (NW) architecture with super high surface area density and good electronic transport properties. This new ALD-based nanomanufacturing technique demonstrated great potential to conduct large-area and low-cost fabrication of high-density 3D nanomaterials for energy harvesting and storage applications, such as photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, solar cells, batteries and supercapacitors. In this dissertation, a series of experimental work is presented regarding fundamental understandings and rational controls of the SPCVD process in branched nanorod (NR) synthesis, as well as the application potentials of 3D branched nanowire architectures. First, the composition control ability of SPCVD was studied on nitrogen-doped TiO2 NRs to overcome the intrinsically visible light absorption constrains of metal oxide semiconductors. Second, to further improve the porosity and surface area while maintain good redox reaction kinetics, several 3D cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) templated fibrous TiO2 nanoarchitectures were synthesized. By integrating the strong capillary property of CNF film, the capillary PEC and capillary photocatalytic systems were developed by performing water redox reactions outside of the body of electrolyte with enhanced reaction kinetics and higher efficiency. At last, SPCVD was applied to the growth of high-density vanadium oxide (VOx) NR branches on Si NW backbones. Such a 3D hierarchical VOx/Si NW structure exhibited enhanced performance as a supercapacitor. These achievements open a new avenue of ALD for large-area, low-cost, and green fabrication of materials, which would be used in solar energy conversion and electrical energy storage.

Book Three Dimensional Nanoengineered Assemblies Volume 739

Download or read book Three Dimensional Nanoengineered Assemblies Volume 739 written by T. M. Orlando and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-13 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in nanoscale materials processing are taking place at a rapid pace via myriad paths, including lithography, production of nanoparticle assemblies, surface manipulation and many others. Several of the techniques create structures that are three-dimensional or quasi three-dimensional. Even smaller structures intended to be two-dimensional have a 'more' three-dimensional geometry as their two-dimensional feature size and layer thickness become similar. The properties of these denser assemblies are driving different applications in electronics (single-electron devices), optics (photonic crystals and switches) and elsewhere. This 2003 book provides a venue for a productive scientific and technical exchange. The result is a compilation of papers which address fundamental studies, technological advances and novel approaches to developing and processing three-dimensional nanoscale assemblies. Topics include: nanofabrication via lithographic techniques; unconventional fabrication methods of nano-structures; physics, chemistry and modeling of nanostructures; fabrication and properties of 1D nanostructures; fabrication and properties of 3D nanostructures; applications of nanostructures and devices.

Book Formation and Understanding of Highly controlled 2 and 3 dimensional Nanoarchitectures

Download or read book Formation and Understanding of Highly controlled 2 and 3 dimensional Nanoarchitectures written by Mackenzie G. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The controlled covalent attachment of nanostructures to chemically-modified surfaces is necessary for the fabrication of devices for diverse applications including chemical and biological sensing, catalysis, microfluidics, photovoltaics, and spintronics. Just as important as understanding the bonding processes taking place, is the knowledge of how the procedural processes affect the resulting structure. The work outlined in this dissertation focuses on identifying and characterizing the chemical interactions taking place during the coupling of molecular- and nanometer-scale structures to amine- and azide-modified solid substrates. Furthermore, these studies address the importance of tailoring the fabrication process to result in highly-controlled architectures. The emphasis is placed on maintaining control over surface coverage, film thickness, and adsorbate placement. The morphology of the resulting structures is studied using various microscopic techniques and characterization of the attachment chemistry is carried out by utilizing a number of spectroscopic methods. Computational investigations augment the conclusions drawn from the spectroscopic results and provide evidence supporting the newfound understanding of the processes of attachment and their effects on the resulting material.

Book Creation and Evaluation of Atomically Ordered Side and Facet Surface Structures of Three Dimensional Silicon Nano Architectures

Download or read book Creation and Evaluation of Atomically Ordered Side and Facet Surface Structures of Three Dimensional Silicon Nano Architectures written by Ken Hattori and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The realization of three-dimensional (3D)-architected nanostructures, that is, the transformation from novel two-dimensional (2D) film-based devices to 3D complex nanodevices, is of crucial importance with the progress of scaling down devices to nanometer order. However, little attention has been devoted to controlling the atomic ordering and structures of side-surfaces on 3D structures, while techniques for controlling and investigating 2D surfaces, namely, surface science, have been established only for planar 2D surfaces. We have established an original methodology that enables atomic orderings and arrangements of surfaces with arbitrary directions to be observed on 3D figured structures by developing diffraction and microscopy techniques. An original technique, namely, directly and quantitatively viewing the side- and facet-surfaces at the atomic scale by reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), can be used to determine process parameters in etching. This chapter introduces methods of evaluation by RHEED and LEED based on a reciprocal space map and methods of creating various atomically flat 111 and {100} side-surfaces of 3D Si nano-architectures and tilted 111 facet-surfaces fabricated by lithography dry and wet etching processes, followed by annealing treatment in vacuum.

Book Three dimensional Nanostructures Fabricated by Stacking Pre patterned Monocrystalline Silicon Nanomembranes

Download or read book Three dimensional Nanostructures Fabricated by Stacking Pre patterned Monocrystalline Silicon Nanomembranes written by Corey Patrick Fucetola and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis considers the viability of nanomembrane handling and stacking approaches to enable the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) nano-structured materials. Sequentially stacking previously-patterned membranes to build up 3D nanostructures, e.g. photonic crystals, is a powerful technique that decouples serial patterning processes from 3D assembly, allows the incorporation of photonic devices into the material and facilitates in-process error inspection. A technique identified to address the fundamental problems with stacking disjoined membranes, i.e. those populated with photonic devices, using water-based approaches was an outgrowth of methods to fabricate, handle and stack their connected counterparts. Initially, connected nanomembranes patterned in a thin layer of silicon on glass were released in hydrofluoric acid where surface tension caused them to float flat. Their fragility inspired novel handling and position manipulation techniques for layer-to-layer alignment. While exploiting surface tension allowed membranes to be stacked using water, drifting precluded precision placement. Although carrier substrates held them stationary, the membranes leaked water before Van-der Waals adhesion was overcome. To address such issues a novel method is introduced whereby a sublimable glue affixes membranes to a glass carrier, which is placed membrane-side down onto a receiving substrate and the glue is vaporized to detach the membranes, leaving them bound to the previous layer.

Book Novel Three Dimensional C3v Symmetric Nano molecules Based on Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes POSS Nano atoms

Download or read book Novel Three Dimensional C3v Symmetric Nano molecules Based on Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes POSS Nano atoms written by Shan Mei and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The self-assembly of individual building blocks with different shapes into close packed ordered structures is prevalent in nature and has drawn much attention of human for long. The close packing of some simple shapes such as sphere and rods has been widely learned and established while the assembly of polyhedral structures is still unsolved and being studied with numerous efforts, of which tetrahedron is one with special interest. However, many previous researches only study the assembly of the building blocks with sizes either too big (tens or hundreds of nanometers) or too small (around one nanometer). Thus, we seek to obtain a size in between by using the newly emerged nano building blocks with precisely defined structures, persistent shapes and outstanding properties, e.g. Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane (POSS). We can predict there to be distinctive difference in the self-assembly behavior and structure between the nano-sized molecules and the traditional ones. In this work, two novel claw-like C3v symmetric nano-molecules with different linkages were successfully synthesized by connecting 3 POSS nano-atoms to 1,3,5-Triphenyladmantane. The nano-molecules were carefully designed to ensure they possess enough shape persistent ability and 3-5 nm size, which fills the size gap between traditional small molecules and large colloidal particles. The crystals of the molecules were obtained via solvent evaporation method and the crystal structures would be explored. This work can not only provide us a new way of designing crystals with Nano-sized units but also help us to deepen our understanding of the relationship between molecular structure and crystal structure.
