Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "Air flowing around the wing tips of an airplane forms horizontal tornado-like vortices that can be dangerous to following aircraft. The dynamics of such vortices, including ground and atmospheric effects, can be predicted by numerical simulation, allowing the safety and capacity of airports to be improved. In this paper, we introduce three-dimensional techniques for visualizing time-dependent, two-dimensional wake vortex computations, and the hazard strength of such vortices near the ground. We describe a vortex core tracing algorithm and a local tiling method to visualize the vortex evolution. The tiling method converts time-dependent, two-dimensional vortex cores into three-dimensional vortex tubes. Finally, a novel approach calculates the induced rolling moment on the following airplane at each grid point within a region near the vortex tubes and thus allows three-dimensional visualization of the hazard strength of the vortices. We also suggest ways of combining multiple visualization methods to present more information simultaneously."

Book excerpt: The detailed, instantaneous flow structure of the near-wake of a cylinder subjected to various classes of active (open-loop) and passive control has been characterized using both qualitative flow visualization and high-image-density particle image velocimetry (piv) developed in our laboratories. The first cinema PIV system allows acquisition of images that are highly resolved in both space and time. Concepts of timing of vortex formation, period-doubled patterns of vortices, and modulated and phase-locked systems of vortices are addressed for controlled oscillations of the cylinder. Three-dimensional patterns of instantaneous vorticity allow classification of the modes of response of the near-wake, providing a basis for formulating concepts for attenuation of vortex formation.

Book excerpt: The linear spatial stability of a compressible thin turbulent wake bound by two side walls is analyzed by the stability theory of an inviscid shear flow. The disturbance propagating in the wake is assumed to be three-dimensional. For free stream Mach numbers up to 2 the analysis shows that in the high frequency region the most unstable mode of the wake is induced by two-dimensional disturbances. However, at the low frequency region the wake is more unstable to three-dimensional disturbances than to two-dimensional ones.

Book excerpt: The decision of the General Assembly of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics to organize a Symposium on Dynamics of Slender Vortices was greeted with great enthusiasm. The acceptance of the proposal, forwarded by the Deutsches Komitee fiir Mechanik (DEKOMECH) signalized, that there was a need for discussing the topic chosen in the frame the IUTAM Symposia offer. Also the location of the symposium was suitably chosen: It was decided to hold the symposium at the RWTH Aachen, where, years ago, Theodore von Karman had worked on problems related to those to be discussed now anew. It was clear from the beginning of the planning, that the symposium could only be held in the von Karman-Auditorium ofthe Rheinisch-Westfalische Technische Hochschule Aachen, a building named after him. The symposium was jointly organized by the editors of this volume, strongly supported by the local organizing committee. The invitations of the scientific committee brought together scientists actively engaged in research on the dynamics of slender vortices. It was the aim of the committee to have the state of the art summarized and also to have the latest results of specific problems investigated communicated to the participants of the symposium. The topics chosen were asymptotic theories, numerical methods, vor tices in shear layers, interaction of vortices, vortex breakdown, vortex sound, and aircraft and helicopter vortices.

Book excerpt: Most fluid flows of practical importance are fully three-dimensional, so the non-linear instability properties of three-dimensional flows are of particular interest. In some cases the three-dimensionality may have been caused by a finite amplitude disturbance whilst, more usually, the unperturbed state is three-dimensional. Practical applications where transition is thought to be associated with non-linearity in a three- dimensional flow arise, for example, in aerodynamics (swept wings, engine nacelles, etc.), turbines and aortic blood flow. Here inviscid `cross-flow' disturbances as well as Tollmien-Schlichting and Görtler vortices can all occur simultaneously and their mutual non-linear behaviour must be understood if transition is to be predicted. The non-linear interactions are so complex that usually fully numerical or combined asymptotic/numerical methods must be used. Moreover, in view of the complexity of the instability processes, there is also a growing need for detailed and accurate experimental information. Carefully conducted tests allow us to identify those elements of a particular problem which are dominant. This assists in both the formulation of a relevant theoretical problem and the subsequent physical validation of predictions. It should be noted that the demands made upon the skills of the experimentalist are high and that the tests can be extremely sophisticated - often making use of the latest developments in flow diagnostic techniques, automated high speed data gathering, data analysis, fast processing and presentation.

Book excerpt: An experimental study of the turbulent wake past different geometries is performed by increasing the complexity from axisymmetric bodies to road vehicles. Whatever the geometry is, two kinds of coherent wake motions are likely to be observed. First, at timescales of the order of 5D/U, D and U being the characteristic size and velocity of the flow respectively, the wake may generate periodic oscillations. These coherent motions are usually associated with the interaction of two facing shear layers of opposite vorticity. As the corresponding frequencies rely at first order on the distance between the shear layers, two distinct frequencies are reported when the afterbody has a cross-flow aspect ratio different than 1. These unsteady global modes seem to weaken when the Reynolds number and the complexity of the geometry increase. The second type of coherent motions corresponds to the development of stationary cross-flow instabilities. They are linked to the symmetry breaking modes observed in laminar regimes and their domains of appearance are defined from geometry considerations in the cases of parallelepiped bodies in ground proximity. These instabilities are responsible for strong asymmetries in the instantaneous flow and may generate bistable dynamics with a characteristic time scale of the order of 1000D/U. The study of these phenomena, combined with sensitivity analyses to small perturbations, places the diminution of the cross-flow asymmetries of the instantaneous wake as a relevant strategy for drag reduction. In particular, it is found that both local and global pressure gradients on the sides of the body are source of streamwise vortices increasing the drag. Parabolic dependences between the drag and the cross-flow forces are reported suggesting similarities with the mechanisms of induced drag that are well-known in aeronautics. Consequently, as they often generate significant wake asymmetries, the development of the cross-flow instabilities is identified as a drag contributor. On the contrary, the part of the drag related to the periodic global modes seems to be negligible especially for complex geometries at high Reynolds number.

The turbulence and thermal stratification of the environment are representative of the conditions on November 12, 2001 near John F. Kennedy International Airport. The simulation assumes no ambient winds. The full three dimensional simulation of the wake vortex system from a Boeing 747 predicts vortex circulation levels at 80% of their initial value at the time of the proposed vortex encounter. The linked vortex oval orientation showed no twisting, and the oval elevations at the widest point were about 20 meters higher than where the vortex pair joined. Fred Proctor of NASA's Langley Research Center presented the results from this work at the NTSB public hearing that started 29 October 2002. First the motion of a vortex in three dimensions is examined by the method of matched asymptotic expansions in which the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations are constructed asymptotically. The dependence of the velocity and stability of the vortex on factors such as the outer(inviscid) flow field and viscosity in the inner (vortical core) region is clearly established. The proximity of the ground plane enters through the outer solution which is matched to the inner, viscosity dependent, solution. The vortex pair in ground effect is shown to be unstable to disturbances of all wavelengths with increasing amplification rate as the ground is approached. Indications are that the present analysis predicts a more stable (less unstable) vortex system than does the inviscid theory. Comparison of the present analysis, in the limit of zero ground effect, with photographs of vortices undergoing a configuration instability is made. The viscosity necessary for agreement is found to be on the order of the eddy viscosity for the turbulent line vortex, indicating the existence of turbulence in the vortex core. (Author).

The encounter of other aircraft with the vortex wake of a heavy aircraft is open to catastrophic hazards. For example, air refueling is adangerous operationpartly due to thepossibility of the receiver aircraft’s encountering the trailing wake of the tanker aircraft. It is very important to know the behavior of vortex wakes of aircraft during theirtakeoff andlanding operations whenthe wakes canpropagate over the airport’s ground surface and be a serious hazard to other depart ing or arriving aircraft. This knowledge can help in enhancing safety of aircraft’s movements in the terminal areas of congested airports where the threat of vortex encounters limits passenger throughput. Theoreticalinvestigations of aircraft vortex wakes arebeingintensively performedinthe major aviationnations.Usedforthispurpose are various methods for mathematical modeling of turbulent flows: direct numerical simulation based on the Navier–Stokes equations, large eddy simulation using the Navier–Stokes equations in combination with subrigid scale modeling, simulation based on the Reynolds equations closed with a differential turbulence model. These approaches are widely used in works of Russian and other countries’ scientists. It should be emphasized that the experiments in wind tunnels and studies of natural vortex wakes behind heavy and light aircraft in flight experiments are equally important.
