The interest felt in it and its early history is seen in the great variety of forms in which the discoveries of modern times have been spread before the public, the discussions excited among the learned respecting its chronology, and many questions connected with its relations to sacred and profane history. Ever since the discovery by Champollion and Dr. Young of the Key to the Hieroglyphics, there have been in training, especially in Europe and Great Britain, a class of investigators called Egyptologists. While equally acknowledging the importance of the results of the research, they differ very considerably as to the truth of the positions assumed on many of the points in question maintained by one another. The two great schools in Germany probably are those of Lepsius and Brugsch on the one side, and Seyffarth, with the author of the present work, Max Uhlemann, on the other, - Uhlemann being somewhat in the middleground, leaning toward Seyffarth. At least they may be regarded as the most prominent representatives of these. classes. Little, comparatively, has been known on this side of the Atlantic except of the former, that of Lepsius. His authority has been appealed to as decisive, especially by some who appear to aim with not a little earnestness in destroying or impairing the credibility of the early Scripture History.
