Book excerpt: A thwarted artist returns home to rural Scotland in this bittersweet slacker debut by an acclaimed, internationally-renowned singer-songwriter. Johnny's return from London to stay with best friend Stevie is the final admission that his dreams of being a great artist are dead. In Victoria Bus Station he meets Mikey, a low-level dealer, who is from the same area. As Johnny tries to get his life back on track, living in a tiny cottage with Stevie, Mikey won't leave them alone, a constant presence destabilising everything around him. As Johnny tries to hang on to the only job he can get, Mikey's actions threaten his livelihood and Stevie's sanity. In a blackly comic climax, events take a sinister turn. Can Johnny and Stevie survive the consequences or will they be dragged down by their unwanted 'friend'? Three Craws is a beautifully evoked portrait of contemporary rural life for those dealt a meagre hand. Praise for Three Craws: 'Atmospheric, absorbing and darkly funny. Every bit as skilful as his songwriting.' Lauren Laverne 'Three Craws is assured, funny, and tragic all at once. Brilliantly captures the quirks and paraxoes of small town Scottish life.' Doug Johnstone, author of Gone Again, The Jump, and The Dead Beat 'James Yorkston's facility for an insidiously absorbing yarn isn't restricted to his songwriting. On Three Craws, he uses it to masterful and often hilarious effect, detailing a world with which we are all (too) familiar: one which occupies the yawning chasm between the lives we desire and the lives we have to accept.' Book Where the Crawdads Sing

Download or read book Where the Crawdads Sing written by Delia Owens and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE—The #1 New York Times bestselling worldwide sensation with more than 18 million copies sold, hailed by The New York Times Book Review as “a painfully beautiful first novel that is at once a murder mystery, a coming-of-age narrative and a celebration of nature.” For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say. Sensitive and intelligent, she has survived for years alone in the marsh that she calls home, finding friends in the gulls and lessons in the sand. Then the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. When two young men from town become intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new life—until the unthinkable happens. Where the Crawdads Sing is at once an exquisite ode to the natural world, a heartbreaking coming-of-age story, and a surprising tale of possible murder. Owens reminds us that we are forever shaped by the children we once were, and that we are all subject to the beautiful and violent secrets that nature keeps.

Book excerpt: It really is amazing how much activity and interest there can be in a relatively small green space like an average backyard if one really pays attention. Birds and critters are all creatures of habit and observing them daily can reveal an awful lot about them and their routines and provide endless entertainment and joy. Of course they are all also capable of spontaneous outbursts which is where most of the fun comes in, especially when they become competitive over the supply of food and water and occasionally even over control of the yard. When you mix that setting with a little imagination and if you have the will to believe in talking stone angels and gnomes and other magical communications between birds and critters, it can lead to truly fascinating adventures. I hope you and your children will get to know the Stonies, the birds and critters who occupy this one particular backyard in Arlington, Virginia, USA. They are a very colorful bunch of characters who will bring you some laughter and maybe even a small tear. They are never boring.

Book Children s Song Favorites

Download or read book Children s Song Favorites written by Alex Usher and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2016-03-18 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children's Song Favorites is a collection of 75 songs for children of all ages, most of them from the folk tradition. They have been collected over more than fifty years by a professional folk singer, who is also a mother and grandmother. Each song has the melody line, complete lyrics and suggested accompaniment chords for guitar or other instrument. Many of them are unusual— for example, all 13 verses of the Three Blind Mice, Hail to Britannia (a British nursery rhyme song), and for older children, Chopo, My Pony (a cowboy song), Old Thompson's Mule (of minstrel origin) and the Housewife's Lament. Audience requests have persuaded the author to include two pieces she has written—The Doll Song and the Solution to Pollution. More than three-quarters of the songs involve audience participation, making this an ideal repertory resource for teachers and youth leaders. A few descriptive sentences, sometimes with suggestions for creative activity, precede each song. the songs are arranged alphabetically, and an extra table of contents lists the songs by categories: animals, cowboys and the West, creative activity, dance tunes, history, holidays, quiet time, and teaching. Although this book was designed primarily for children, the author regularly uses many of these songs with grown-up audiences.

Book The Sunrise Liturgy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mia Anderson
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2012-09-21
  • ISBN : 1498270557
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book The Sunrise Liturgy written by Mia Anderson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-21 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Committing theology to poetry is not new, but it's not wildly common. The Sunrise Liturgy aims to do just that. It is a sequence, like liturgy, with a start and a procession and a finish. The sun does the processing, and the play on sun and Son is never far from sight. Sunrise gives the cantus firmus to this theological theme and variations, where the going is by turns easy, by turns thickly polyphonic--take a deep breath! The cantus firmus shifts from voice to voice, disappearing, towards year's end, beyond the audible range of human mortals. But there are other mortals in this procession of the year, "acolytes of the Holy Impotence," and under and beside and through it all flows the St. Lawrence River, le fleuve, winding across the page, a tidal presence at once natural and mystical. As are the snow geese. As is the heron. There is an attempt to wrestle with a credible theodicy, especially environmental. There is a profound penchant for the eremitic, with nods to The Cloud of Unknowing and Gregory of Nyssa. And always there is the priestly sense of "performance," enactment, and Eucharist, for this is a priest speaking.
