Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of the Religious Life: Or an Explication of the Catechism of the Vows It is not hard to show that all the principles of the religious life are connected with the profession of the vows that are made therein; because these vows already include its chief obligations; and any explanation of them, done as it should be, even though brief, inevitably touches all the others. Now, in the little treatise which we published under the title, "The Catechism of the Vows," our purpose was only to state very briefly these principles and these obligations of the religious life. It was simply an elementary work which we designed for all persons who live in the religious state, and we hoped that its usefulness would be all the more general, for the reason that its very brevity would make it easy to learn and to remember. And, as it turned out, we have had the consolation to see the little book find its way, in the course of a few years, into a large number of religious communities. But a Catechism usually makes necessary an explication. On the other hand, it cannot tell everything to the teachers of it, who, nevertheless, have need, in order to expound an abridgment with more confidence and profit, to know beyond what it contains. Accordingly, a number of persons, whose duty it is to explain to others "The Catechism of the Vows," have expressed to us their regret that questions of such importance were presented by it with such conciseness. At least they would be glad to find elsewhere the same subjects with developments apt to elucidate them. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Religious Life The chief object for which this work has been written is to furnish those who wish to lead a solidly devout life in the Ecclesiastical, in the Religious, or in the Secular State, with a manual or text-book containing, in as compendious a form as possible, the 'principles' upon which such a life must be built. The sources whence materials for an undertaking of this kind may be drawn are various and numerous; but out of the many at my disposal, two are especially deserving of mention, inasmuch as it has been by the doctrine which I have learnt from them, that I have been guided in much that has been treated of in this book. The first of these are the works of Cassian, to which, as a child of St. Benedict, I felt myself drawn as it were by instinct; for, it was from the world-famed 'Conferences' of this learned ascetic that our holy Father drew much of that spiritual lore which is so conspicuous in the various enactments of his Rule, and to the pages of which he refers his children, for those sublime lessons of spiritual wisdom, which will lead them to the topmost height of Christian perfection. Cassian's teaching, save upon the question of divine grace, is unexceptionally good. His deficiency upon this point may be satisfactorily accounted for, if we bear in mind that in his day various questions which arise out of this most intricate subject had not been thoroughly examined into and set at rest for ever by the infallible decision of the Church. The second is the 'Theologia Mystica' of Father Dominick Schram, O.S.B., in which that erudite Religious has bequeathed to us valuable treasures of Christian asceticism arranged with scientific accuracy, and stored away with scholastic neatness and precision. The plan of which I have made use for reducing to order the mass of material which presented itself to my hands, is a very simple one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Life and Thought The following observations on Religious Life and Thought, although appearing in the popular form of Sermons, and printed as they were delivered from week to week to my own Congrega tion, and having the slightness of structure that such communi cations require, are not hasty expressions of opinion. They are portions of a deliberately formed body of opinion. The concep tions of religion to be found in them have been elaborated at leisure. The statement of these conceptions is often made with little enough leisure; but I wish it to be distinctly understood that the Sermons do not set forth tentative essays at the solution of a great problem. I would rather that they were looked upon as sundry efforts to familiarize the public mind with results at which I have myself arrived after many years of special study. Not that I suppose for a moment that I have seen wholly round the subject treated of. I know it too well to entertain any such notion. I can honestly make use of words of Kant, applied by him to another subject of inquiry: Alle Aufgaben aufib'sen. Book The Fundamentals of the Religious Life

Download or read book The Fundamentals of the Religious Life written by John Schleurter and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS little book appeared first in French, over two hundred years ago. Its author was a priest of the Society of Jesus. Only the initial "0" of his name is given on the title-page. The French publisher says that the book, although short, contains the best that has ever been written about the religious life. It is regarded as a masterpiece of its kind. The well-known Jesuit, Father Ramiere, calls it a real treasure and believes that anyone who makes it known to those who wish to reach the perfection of the religious life is doing a good work. He considers himself favored to be able to recommend it most earnestly. The Vicar-General de Ville, of Lyons, pronounces it to be the very best book that can be offered to religious for their instruction. The German translation was very favorably received. Many religious wrote to the translator to express their sincere gratitude for having published it in German. This translation is from the German edition. This book commences: "YOU have opened your heart to the voice of our most beloved Saviour, who, in His goodness and mercy, has called you to the religious life. You have courageously followed this call and have overcome all the difficulties and obstacles in your way. Up to the present you have performed all your religious duties generously, zealously, and joyously, but remember that this is not sufficient; you must persevere. If you grow lax in the observance of your rules and in your religious duties, you expose yourself to the gravest danger, and, even more justly than the man in the Gospel, to the reproach of having laid the foundation of a magnificent structure, but of not having finished it. "Perseverance completes the work; and he who perseveres unto the end shall be crowned."
