Book Piety and Public Opinion

Download or read book Piety and Public Opinion written by Thomas B. Pepinsky and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the Muslim world, religion plays an increasingly prominent role in both the private and public lives of over a billion people. Will democratic political participation by an increasingly religious population lead to victories by Islamists at the ballot box? Will more conspicuously pious Muslims participate in politics and markets in a fundamentally different way than they had previously? Against the common assumption that piety would naturally inhibit any tendencies towards modernity, democracy, or cosmopolitanism, Piety and Public Opinion reveals the complex and subtle links between religion and political beliefs in a critically important Muslim democracy.

Book The Bible s Teaching On the Call to the Ministry

Download or read book The Bible s Teaching On the Call to the Ministry written by William S. Plumer and published by Puritan Publications. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you know if you should enter into the Gospel ministry? Although this is a plain subject in its matter, it is exceedingly difficult in its practical application. Modest, humble, pious men are very apt to be deterred from all thoughts of entering the ministry, while others of doubtful piety, having a spice of self-conceit, and a dash of forwardness, frequently derive encouragement from such things. It is the purpose of this volume to state the biblical principles with all possible plainness, and endeavor in practice to guard carefully against their abuse. The text used is Matthew 4:18-22, in the calling of the first disciples. There are specific and important lessons to be learned from that passage on being called to Christ’s ordained office of church elder. Who ought to study the question, Am I Called? Men in Christ, who are not far advanced in life, and possess sound minds, may not dismiss the subject without a moment’s serious thought. Topics covered are the nature of the call, evidences to the ministry, necessary qualifications, conviction of duty, and evidences that are requisite for a true call. This is a helpful work to aid the reader in determining whether or not they belong in the Gospel ministry. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book A Presbyterian Bibliography

Download or read book A Presbyterian Bibliography written by Harold B. Prince and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Librarians, historians, researchers, students, and others interested in examining the literary production of Southern Presbyterian ministers and works written about them will find A Presbyterian Bibliography invaluable. A 4,187-entry listing of extant published writings of ministers ordained by or received into the Presbyterian Church in the United States in its first hundred years, 1861-1961, this bibliography lists works by and about PCUS ministers and gives locations of all editions found in eight significant theological collections in the U.S.A. Presbyterian seminary libraries are those of Austin, Columbia, Louisville, Princeton, Reformed, and Union (Virginia); included also are the libraries of the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches and the Presbyterian Historical Society. An examination of this listing of published (i.e., printed) books, parts of books, pamphlets, and periodical article repreints shows that PCUS ministers became authors, editors, translators, poets, dramatists, composers, and essayists who wrote sermons, polemics, commentaries, Bible studies, theologies, histories, and letters to Presidents. Content notes and annotations for many books indicate individual minister contributions. A subject index, and indexes leading to every listing of a minister's name and to the main entries of the other presons gives access to the Bibliography.
