Book Aspirations of Thought Word and Deed

Download or read book Aspirations of Thought Word and Deed written by Michael Hall and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written as a collection of free-verse poetry with the theme being observations from an individuals point of view, reactions to current events, and then aspiration to a higher edification . I have come to a personal conclusion that the greatest objective one can achieve here is to transform love into service. To dissipate ones desires. To discover and embrace an exemplary purpose and this fidelity becomes the caliper of faith, which is the measure of ones worth. Any of us must live according to a belief or risk living a life unfulfilled, undefined, to live selfishly. I aspire.

Book excerpt: In today’s church, there seems to be two well-intentioned groups. “Deed” people feed the hungry and help the poor, while “Word” people proclaim the gospel and engage in apologetics. The two often seem to compete with one another, but God always intended them to be partners. Sacrificial love can grab the attention of those we serve, opening their ears and minds to the words we share. In Tangible, author and Pastor Chris Sicks explains how God’s people can effectively introduce hurting people to God through intentional acts of kindness. This book does more than discuss these good ideas. It’s full of ways to make God known to the needy in your community today. Extra features include: A thorough resource section Ministry examples Discussion questions for personal study or group discussion By sharing both words of truth and deeds of mercy, God’s people will reflect Christ’s love—the most tangible proof of God’s existence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much more than just a traditional festschrift, "Story Lines" is a book reflecting -- and moving beyond -- much of the ferment in twentieth-century theology. Written by a cast of esteemed Christian thinkers who have shaped an entire generation of theological inquiry, this volume transforms the changing and conflicted theological scene of the last half century into a clear and steady path for the church of today. Though diverse in orientation -- ecumenical and evangelical, Protestant and Roman Catholic -- the contributors to "Story Lines" share Gabe Fackres commitment to classical Christian teaching that seeks to speak to the times. The organizing principle of this work is story, the master metaphor with which Fackre is associated. Each chapter contributes to the telling of the great narrative of Christianity by probing key aspects of the faith for the twenty-first century. The first set of essays discusses the meaning of the Christian story today. The second section of the book explores the mission of the Christian story within a global context. The final essays look at the Christian story as ministry. The volume also includes a comprehensive listing of Fackres publications. Informed, ecumenical, and written by authors deeply committed to relating Christian thought and practice to contemporary life, "Story Lines" is not only a fitting tribute to its esteemed honoree but also a substantial theological statement in its own right.CONTRIBUTORS: Elizabeth Achtemeier Paul J. Book The Gaelic Background of Old English Poetry before Bede

Download or read book The Gaelic Background of Old English Poetry before Bede written by Colin A. Ireland and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventh-century Gaelic law-tracts delineate professional poets (filid) who earned high social status through formal training. These poets cooperated with the Church to create an innovative bilingual intellectual culture in Old Gaelic and Latin. Bede described Anglo-Saxon students who availed themselves of free education in Ireland at this culturally dynamic time. Gaelic scholars called sapientes (“wise ones”) produced texts in Old Gaelic and Latin that demonstrate how Anglo-Saxon students were influenced by contact with Gaelic ecclesiastical and secular scholarship. Seventh-century Northumbria was ruled for over 50 years by Gaelic-speaking kings who could access Gaelic traditions. Gaelic literary traditions provide the closest analogues for Bede’s description of Cædmon’s production of Old English poetry. This ground-breaking study displays the transformations created by the growth of vernacular literatures and bilingual intellectual cultures. Gaelic missionaries and educational opportunities helped shape the Northumbrian “Golden Age”, its manuscripts, hagiography, and writings of Aldhelm and Bede.

Book The Word is Near You

    Book Details:
  • Author : Per Jarle Bekken

Download or read book The Word is Near You written by Per Jarle Bekken and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study deals with a difficult and much-debated text in Paul’s Letter to the Romans, 9:30-10:21. The study in particular analyses Paul’s use and interpretation of Deuteronomy 30:12-14 in Romans 10:4-17. Scholars have characterized Paul’s exegesis here as idiosyncratic, fanciful, baffling, and arbitrary. By a comparison with Jewish writings near Paul in time, such as the writings of Philo of Alexandria and Baruch, the thesis is argued that Paul’s treatment of Deuteronomy 30:12-14 can be located within Jewish exegetical method, expository structure, terminology as well as content and context. In comparison with Baruch and Philo, it has been shown that Paul’s handling of Deuteronomy 30:12-14 can be placed within a Jewish context as to the way the biblical quotations are rendered. The thesis is substantiated that Paul’s expository rendering of Deuteronomy 30:12-14 follows the method of exegetical paraphrase of a biblical quotation. So, in comparison with Baruch and Philo, Paul’s interpretative rendering of Deuteronomy 30:12-14 falls within a form of exposition, in which words, phrases and sentences from the Old Testament quotation are either repeated or replaced by interpretative terms and supplemented with other qualifying terms. Thus, Paul’s christological exposition of Deut 30:12-14 can be located within the method of exegetical paraphrase, with a parallel in Baruch’s application of this OT Scripture to the personified ‘Wisdom’.

Book SUMMA THEOLOGICA

    Book Details:
  • Author : Thomas Aquinas
  • Publisher : Good Press
  • Release : 2023-11-25
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 5125 pages

Download or read book SUMMA THEOLOGICA written by Thomas Aquinas and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-11-25 with total page 5125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ebook is the best-known work of Thomas Aquinas (c.1225–1274). Although unfinished, the Summa is "one of the classics of the history of philosophy and one of the most influential works of Western literature." It is intended as an instructional guide for moderate theologians, and a compendium of all of the main theological teachings of the Catholic Church. It presents the reasoning for almost all points of Christian theology in the West. The Summa Theologica is divided into three parts, and each of these three parts contains numerous subdivisions. Part 1 deals primarily with God and comprises discussions of 119 questions concerning the existence and nature of God, the Creation, angels, the work of the six days of Creation, the essence and nature of man, and divine government. Part 2 deals with man and includes discussions of 303 questions concerning the purpose of man, habits, types of law, vices and virtues, prudence and justice, fortitude and temperance, graces, and the religious versus the secular life. Part 3 deals with Christ and comprises discussions of 90 questions concerning the Incarnation, the Sacraments, and the Resurrection. Some editions of the Summa Theologica include a Supplement comprising discussions of an additional 99 questions concerning a wide variety of loosely related issues such as excommunication, indulgences, confession, marriage, purgatory, and the relations of the saints toward the damned. Scholars believe that Rainaldo da Piperno, a friend of Aquinas, probably gathered the material in this supplement from a work that Aquinas had completed before he began working on the Summa Theologica.
