Download or read book The Law and Ethics of Freedom of Thought Volume 1 written by Marc Jonathan Blitz and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom of thought is one of the great and venerable notions of Western thought, often celebrated in philosophical texts – and described as a crucial right in American, European, and International Law, and in that of other jurisdictions. What it means more precisely is, however, anything but clear; surprisingly little writing has been devoted to it. In the past, perhaps, there has been little need for such elaboration. As one Supreme Court Justice stressed, “[f]reedom to think is absolute of its own nature” because even “the most tyrannical government is powerless to control the inward workings of the mind.” But the rise of brain scanning, cognition enhancement, and other emerging technologies make this question a more pressing one. This volume provides an interdisciplinary exploration of how freedom of thought might function as an ethical principle and as a constitutional or human right. It draws on philosophy, legal analysis, history, and reflections on neuroscience and neurotechnology to explore what respect for freedom of thought (or an individual’s cognitive liberty or autonomy) requires.

Download or read book Spell Jars for Beginners written by Anita Gonzalez and published by XinXii. This book was released on 2023-06-18 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of spell jars can be traced all the way back to ancient times, and evidence of rituals that are very similar can be discovered in a wide variety of cultures and traditions. One of the earliest examples comes from Ancient Egypt, where magic spells were written on papyrus or pieces of pottery and buried in tombs. These items were then discovered centuries later. Citizens in ancient Greece and Rome were known to protect themselves by carrying amulets and talismans with them at all times. It was also usual practice for them to employ little containers that were stuffed with various herbs and other components. During the Middle Ages in Europe, spell jars were known as witch bottles and were used to ward off evil spirits or to curse an enemy. These bottles were typically used to hold urine, hair, and fingernails before being buried on the property of the individual who had performed the spell. In some cases, the bodies were even found buried within the walls of the dwellings or beneath the floors. The use of spell jars in North America can be traced back to the African diaspora and the practice of Hoodoo, which is a form of African American folk magic. In Hoodoo, the jars are believed to hold the power to cast spells. Hoodoo practitioners produced and used spell jars filled with herbs, roots, and other substances for a variety of purposes, including love spells, money spells, and protection spells.

Download or read book American Opinion on Trade written by Alexandra Guisinger and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-07 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans have contradictory beliefs about how international trade affects the country as whole and specific communities. Yet notwithstanding the heat of political rhetoric, these beliefs are rarely mobilized into political action. Alexandra Guisinger examines this apparent disconnect by examining the bases of Americans' trade preferences in today's post-industrial economy and why do so few politicians attempt to take advantage of these preferences. The changing American economy has made the direct effects of trade less obvious, making the benefits and costs more difficult to determine. In addition, information sources, including the media, have changed in content and influence over time, their influence varies across different groups of individuals, and partly as a result individuals hold countervailing beliefs about the effect of trade on their own and others' economic outcomes. American Opinion on Trade provides a multi-method examination of the sources of attitudes, drawing on survey data and experimental surveys; it also traces how trade issues become intertwined with attitudes toward redistribution as well as gender and race.

Download or read book Evidence Respect and Truth written by Liat Levanon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can we rely solely on statistics when we judge what is true and just? This book takes a holistic approach to addressing this question. It considers the legal trial as its paradigmatic case study before analysing a wide range of different cases, including profiling, the use of algorithms to predict students' grades, and the authorisation of automated cars. The book suggests that when we make judgements about the truth or about justice, approximations are not good enough. Truth and justice are uncompromising. They must be so, because the value that underlies them both is respect; and respect takes no compromise. Thus, in the search for truth as in the search for justice, a body of evidence that imposes a statistical compromise will not do. Only evidence that in principle allows reaching the truth and doing justice is good evidence. Once such evidence has been traced, the burden is on us to make good use of the evidence and reach truth and justice. We might or might not succeed, but once we have done our best on evidence that allows success, our judgements are justified; and as such, they can resolve conflicts over the truth and over justice.
