Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Linked returns with a ground breaking new theory that will enthrall fans of The Tipping Point Can we scientifically predict our future? It's a mystery that has nagged scientists for perhaps thousand of years. Now Albert-László Barabási-the award-winning author of the sleeper hit Linked- explains how the digital age has yielded a massive, previously unavailable data set that proves the daily pattern of human activity isn't random, it's "bursty." We work and fight and play in short flourishes of activity followed by next to nothing. Compellingly illustrated with the account of a bloody medieval crusade in sixteenth-century Transylvania and the modern tale of a contemporary artist hunted by the FBI, Bursts reveals that we are far more predictable than we like to think.

  • Author : Frank McKinney
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2010-01-01
  • ISBN : 075739762X
  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Burst This written by Frank McKinney and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank McKinney continues his international bestseller tradition of delivering contrarian perspectives and strategies for generational success in real estate. Tired of all the doom and gloom? Frank McKinney helps you wash away the worry—the anxiety financial theorists and misguided media constantly dump into the real-estate marketplace. During his twenty-five-year career, this 'real estate rock czar' (The Wall Street Journal) and undisputed 'king of the ready-made dream homes' (USA Today) has not only survived but thrived through all economic conditions by taking the contrarian position and making his own markets. Burst This! Frank McKinney's Bubble-Proof Real Estate Strategies clearly shows you how to prepare for and time the upswings while insulating your real estate investments from the inherent, inevitable corrective cycle. The truth is that opportunities to profit abound during every phase. Lots of people prosper in boom times, of course, but many set themselves up to make even bigger money during a crisis/correction. Why not do both, now? Investors of all experience levels learn to turn the bubble mentality inside out, transforming it into a protective force field and a crystal ball, allowing you to accurately forecast your real estate future. You will see how you can aspire not just to survival, but also to what McKinney calls "thrival," developing your ability to capitalize on market conditions. McKinney takes you on a factual real estate retrospective, a "post mortem" of the housing markets, beginning with the mid-seventies to today. By studying six distinct real estate cycles over the last thirty-five years, he sifts out critical, recurring trends that highlight significant opportunities while signaling you where history might repeat itself. You will see exactly how McKinney has successfully handled these predictable cycles with timeless financial and investment strategies. • Hear a resounding counter-opinion to the doomsayers and the get-rich-quick schemers who crawl out of the cesspool whenever the market's pendulum swings too far in one direction--and guard against falling into their traps. • Discover why the positive and negative excitement (a.k.a. greed and fear) associated with boom and bust times are your worst enemies, brought out by nothing more than recurring market cycles. • Get the evidentiary truth, not the fear-mongering or the sugar-coating, on real-estate's ups and downs. • Pinpoint the real-estate investments, and a proven approach to marketing them, that have consistently shown immunity to the market's volatile fluctuations.

Book Toward an Understanding of the Progenitors of Gamma Ray Bursts

Download or read book Toward an Understanding of the Progenitors of Gamma Ray Bursts written by Joshua S. Bloom and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The various possibilities for the origin ("progenitors") of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) manifest in differing observable properties. Through deep spectroscopic and high-resolution imaging observations of some GRB hosts, I demonstrate that well-localized long-duration GRBs are connected with otherwise normal star-forming galaxies at moderate redshifts of order unity. Using high-mass binary stellar population synthesis models, I quantify the expected spatial extent around galaxies of coalescing neutron stars, one of the leading contenders for GRB progenitors. I then test this scenario by examining the offset distribution of GRBs about their apparent hosts making extensive use of ground-based optical data from Keck and Palomar and space-based imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope. The offset distribution appears to be inconsistent with the coalescing neutron star binary hypothesis (and, similarly, black-hole--neutron star coalescences); instead, the distribution is statistically consistent with a population of progenitors that closely traces the ultra-violet light of galaxies. This is naturally explained by bursts which originate from the collapse of massive stars ``collapsars''). This claim is further supported by the unambiguous detections of intermediate-time (approximately three weeks after the bursts) emission ``bumps'' which appear substantially more red than the afterglows themselves. I claim that these bumps could originate from supernovae that occur at approximately the same time as the associated GRB; if true, GRB 980326 and GRB 011121 provide strong observational evidence connecting cosmological GRBs to high-redshift supernovae and implicate massive stars as the progenitors of at least some long-duration GRBs.

Book A Burst of Conscious Light

Download or read book A Burst of Conscious Light written by Andrew Silverman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-02-11 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides evidence that human consciousness can never be reproduced and exposes the perils of artificial intelligence • Explains how consciousness transcends the brain and body through quantum theory and accounts of consciousness in the clinically dead • Shares scientific evidence of how the image on the Shroud of Turin was produced and connects these findings to evidence concerning near-death experiences • Reveals how consciousness cannot be reproduced by a machine and how attempts to do so threaten what makes us human Stephen Hawking once said that the unanticipated consequences of artificial intelligence will be the greatest threat to humanity’s survival. In this book, Dr. Andrew Silverman reveals why the powerful consciousness of the human mind could never be manufactured and so cannot be reproduced with technology. Integrating extensive scientific research from three seemingly unrelated fields of study--quantum mechanics, near-death experiences, and the Shroud of Turin--Silverman reveals the pitfalls and perils of artificial intelligence and addresses the fundamentally flawed thinking that underlies it. Drawing on his work as one of the leading experts on the Shroud of Turin as well as research by scientists from NASA and Los Alamos, he shows how the image on the Shroud could only have been produced by a flash of light as intense as a nuclear explosion--a burst of light that occurred after the body was in the tomb. Sharing medical evidence of consciousness in people declared clinically dead, the author shows how the light of consciousness evidenced by the Shroud is also a consistent feature of most near-death experiences. Exploring the non-local nature of consciousness--how it transcends the physical brain and body, Silverman explains why the human mind cannot be reduced to a computer and examines what separates sentient beings from machines. He shows how getting caught up in the push for artificial intelligence and the technological quest for immortality--through the attempt to “download” our minds onto computers--will only lead us to devalue and erase what makes us unique and irreplaceable in this cold, dark universe: our humanity.
