This book was released on 2005 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thought and Poetic Structure in San Juan de la Cruz's Symbol of Night is a comprehensive appraisal of the traditional critical perspectives of mysticism: philosophical, theological, literary, and psychological. Book Cognition and Communication in John of the Cross

Download or read book Cognition and Communication in John of the Cross written by Elizabeth Wilhelmsen and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1985 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Juan de la Cruz contain numerous passages dealing with human cognition, both ordinary and mystical. Beginning with his analysis of acts of knowledge common to all men, through the peculiar transformation of the rational powers undergone in the «dark night, » this study traces San Juan's examination of the mystic's knowledge in and through God. The sixteenth-century Spanish thinker stresses that conditionality is a fundamental character of all human knowledge, and brings to light a complex movement of contiguity between one and another mode of cognitive activity. Also discussed is the communication, through the instruments of prose and poetry, of the mystic's supereminent and therefore ineffable experience of knowledge and love. Relying upon Juan de la Cruz's own texts, it is shown how a relative communication can be effected despite the barriers separating mystical from ordinary cognition. The exploration highlights how San Juan turns for poetic symbols to the analogia entis, while at once basing his symbolism upon mysterious correlations between mystical, immediate cognition and ordinary acts of intellection mediated through sensation.

Book Cassell s Encyclopedia of Queer Myth Symbol and Spirit

Download or read book Cassell s Encyclopedia of Queer Myth Symbol and Spirit written by Randy P. Conner and published by Burns & Oates. This book was released on 1997 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that in medieval French folklore a person might change sex by passing under a rainbow? Or that same-sex unions have been celebrated by peoples of the ancient Mediterranean, Africa, China, and Indigenous America? Or that Sappho, da Vinci, Emily Dickinson, Nijinsky, Benjamin Britten, Mishima, Adrienne Rich, Audre Lorde, Keith Haring, Boy George, and Derek Jarman number among those who have explored the spiritual dimension of gender and sexuality in their works? While the terms many of us employ today to identify ourselves - 'queer', 'lesbian', 'gay', 'bisexual', 'transgendered' - differ markedly from those of peoples of other times and places, we are nevertheless the bearers of a rich spiritual history that has been ignored or suppressed, a history encoded in sacred texts as well as in works of art, music, dance and other media. Drawing upon religion, mythology, folklore, anthropology, history and the arts, the Encyclopedia is a cornucopia of queer spirituality, containing over 1,500 alphabetically arranged entries from Aakulujjuusi to Zeus.

  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Children of the Mire written by Octavio Paz and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Octavio Paz launches a far-ranging excursion into the "incestuous and tempestuous" relations between modern poetry and the modern epoch. From the perspective of a Spanish-American and a poet, he explores the opposite meanings that the word "modern" has held for poets and philosophers, artists, and scientists. Tracing the beginnings of the modern poetry movement to the pre-Romantics, Paz outlines its course as a contradictory dialogue between the poetry of the Romance and Germanic languages. He discusses at length the unique character of Anglo-American "modernism" within the avant-garde movement, and especially vis- -vis French and Spanish-American poetry. Finally he offers a critique of our era's attitude toward the concept of time, affirming that we are at the "twilight of the idea of the future." He proposes that we are living at the end of the avant-garde, the end of that vision of the world and of art born with the first Romantics.
