Book Those Kids Deserve Water Too A History of the Patoka Lake Regional Water and Sewer District

Download or read book Those Kids Deserve Water Too A History of the Patoka Lake Regional Water and Sewer District written by David L. Dahl and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, as America sent men to the moon, thousands in southern Indiana relied on water supplies little changed from pioneer days-cisterns or shallow wells often poor in quality, high in sulfur, or otherwise contaminated. During droughts when tanks ran dry, and wells failed, water for drinking, cooking, and bathing was trucked from springs or nearby towns. For decades, local leaders struggled to quench their communities' thirst. In 1975, that all changed with the creation of the Patoka Lake Regional Water and Sewer District which provides drinking water to thirty-three water utilities and thousands of residential and commercial customers scattered across eleven counties in southwestern Indiana-an area that uniquely lacked readily available water. A new generation has grown accustomed to a ready supply of clean water. In Those Kids Deserve Water Too, author David L. Dahl tells how the district changed life for thousands of Hoosiers.

Book excerpt: In the 1950s, groundwater was the main source of water supply for the 2.5 million people who lived in southern Los Angeles County at the time. That supply was in peril. Groundwater elevations in the Central and West Coast Basins were dropping precipitously. Massive quantities of seawater were contaminating aquifers. Groundwater pumping was unregulated and the basins were unmanaged. The Water Replenishment District was created in 1959 to restore and protect the groundwater resources of the basins. Today, the basins provide half the water supply for 4 million people in all or parts of 43 cities. Groundwater elevations are at healthy levels, who can pump how much water is fixed, seawater is held at bay, and the basins are sustainably managed and replenished with local supply. Protecting Our Groundwater tells the story of how that came to be.

Book Nyasa the Great Water

Download or read book Nyasa the Great Water written by William Percival Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nyasa, the Great Water: Being a Description of the Lake and the Life of the People I have to exercise considerable self-control and repress my desire to say all I know and have thought about Will Johnson ever since I went as a boy to the Grammar School at Bedford in 1877. He had then left the school and Oxford too; but he was still one of our heroes, chiefly I suppose for his prowess as the Stroke of the School Four and Stroke of his College VIII when Univ. Went head of the river, and for his success in gaining from the School an appointment in the i.c.s. Behind his prowess and intellectual success lay greatness of soul and gifts of real leadership. These had led naturally to his determination to leave all and obey the call of his Master to the Mission Field in Africa. Then dear old Seppy Phillpotts used to keep us informed of his work and encouraged us to provide the Ousel for his voyages on Lake Nyasa. He would have made a great adminis trator in India, and no doubt the Service itself suffered a loss by his decision to dedicate his gifts to the work of a missionary in Africa.
