Book The Sayings of Thomas Carlyle

Download or read book The Sayings of Thomas Carlyle written by Thomas Carlyle and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 1993 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During his lifetime Thomas Carlyle was regarded as a plain-speaking, if somewhat irascible, prophet; a larger-than-life figure whose fame and influence rivalled even that of Lord Byron's. But if Carlyle's reputation as a prophet and as an historian steadily declined in the years that followed his death, his bon mots remain as fresh, entertaining, and as scathing as ever. His sharp tongue (which was matched only by that of his wife's), was unleashed on anyone, friend or foe, who aroused his displeasure, and upset as many of his more mealy-mouthed Victorian contemporaries as his published work made him admirers. The Sayings of Thomas Carlyle sees the 'Sage of Chelsea' in full flight, and his pungent reflections on politics, life, and those around him, show that while political and economic theories come and go, simple spleen can stand the test of time. Selected and with an introduction by Brendan King

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume represent some of the most recent reconsiderations of the living legacy of Thomas Carlyle from both established and upcoming Carlyle scholars. Readers will have the opportunity to explore the richness of Carlyle's ideals, including the ones which challenge modern sensibilities the most. The essays examine carefully the complexities, difficulties, and contours of Carlyle's political and social vision. They also sample the breadth of Carlyle's thought, along with that of Jane Welsh Carlyle, his wife and fellow intellectual traveler, covering topics from political philosophy and cultural critique to education, historiography, biography, and the vagaries of editing. His roles as a political thinker and professional historian are investigated in depth, in addition to his better-known position as a critic of Victorian mores. Thomas Carlyle truly emerges "resartus" or re-tailored, ready to speak with renewed hope to the weighty concerns of the present. --Book Jacket.

Book Past and Present

Book excerpt: Thomas Carlyle (4 December 1795 - 5 February 1881) was a Scottish philosopher, satirical writer, essayist, historian and teacher. One of the most important social commentators of his time, he presented many lectures during his lifetime with certain acclaim in the Victorian era. One of those conferences resulted in his famous work On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History where he explains that the key role in history lies in the actions of the "Great Man", claiming that "History is nothing but the biography of the Great Man". A respected historian in his day, his 1837 book The French Revolution: A History was the inspiration for Dickens' 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities, and remains popular today. Carlyle's 1836 novel Sartor Resartus is considered one of the finest works of the nineteenth century.
