Book excerpt: A history of the Jews in the entire area of Macedonia, including Vardar Macedonia (the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia) and parts of Macedonia belonging to Greece and Bulgaria. Ch. 5 (p. 88-96), "The Onset of Nazism and the Second World War", discusses briefly German antisemitism in the 19th-20th centuries, the war, and the Holocaust. Ch. 7 (p. 108-206), "The Deportation and Liquidation of the Jews of Macedonia", describes anti-Jewish measures of Bulgarian authorities in Vardar Macedonia, including economic restrictions and the return of Serbian Jewish refugees to German-occupied Serbia. Dwells on the deportation of Jews by the Bulgarians from Vardar Macedonia and Aegean Macedonia to Treblinka in March 1943. The deportation from Vardar Macedonia was preceded by the establishment of a detention camp in Skopje, where ca. 7,300 Jews were interned. Dwells also on the deportation of Jews from Salonika. Contends that the Bulgarians did not permit the Germans to deport the Bulgarian Jews, because in 1943 Germany already was loosing the war, and Bulgarian leaders sought a way out of the cul-de-sac of their partnership with the Nazis. Only the Italians in their occupation zone in Vardar Macedonia were able to protect the Jews.

Successive invaders— Roman, Gothic, Hun, Slav, Ottoman— passed through or subjugated the area and incorporated it into their respective dynastic or territorial empires. This detailed volume surveys the history of Macedonia from 600 BC to the present day, with an emphasis on the past two centuries. It reveals how the "Macedonian question" has long dominated Balkan politics and how, for nearly two centuries, it was the central issue dividing Balkan peoples, as neighboring nations struggled for possession of Macedonia and denied any distinct Macedonian identity— territorial, political, ethnic, or national. The author concludes that Balkan acceptance of a Macedonian identity, nation, and state has become a necessity for stability in the Balkans and in a united Europe.

Following workers, managers, and investors in the Macedonian construction sector, Fabio Mattioli shows how financialization can empower authoritarian regimes—not by making money accessible to everyone, but by allowing a small group of oligarchs to monopolize access to international credit and promote a cascade of exploitative domestic debt relations. The landscape of failed deals and unrealizable dreams that is captured in this book portrays finance not as a singular, technical process. Instead, Mattioli argues that finance is a set of political and economic relations that entangles citizens, Eurocrats, and workers in tense paradoxes. Mattioli traces the origins of illiquidity in the reorganization of the European project and the postsocialist perversion of socialist financial practices—a dangerous mix that hid the Macedonian regime's weakness behind a façade of urban renewal and, for a decade, made it seem omnipresent and invincible. Dark Finance chronicles how, one bad deal at a time, Macedonia's authoritarian regime rode a wave of financial expansion that deepened its reach into Macedonian society, only to discover that its domination, like all speculative bubbles, was teetering on the verge of collapse.
