Book This Realm This England Classic Reprint

Download or read book This Realm This England Classic Reprint written by George Albemarle Bertie Dewar and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from This Realm, This England The Charm of the chalk is in some degree the charm of insularity among many of us. Right or wrong, one hugs the idea that it is above all other rocks the special rock of England, geologically our rock. It is something of a surprise to find a pale faced shore across the water as well as at home. Travelling by train through Normandy anyone who knows the English chalk scenery well - its streams and hills, and the configuration of the land - but does not know France well, may wonder still more to find some of the familiar features there too. Where the chalk is really the soil or undersoil, even though it does not actually break through the green in places or take the form of rolling down and grey greensward, I think it cannot be overlooked or mis taken. In Normandy you can tell you are on the Chalk in places, though you may not see a Sign of down. There is something in its form as well as in its flora, and, where water flows, there is something still more in its streams and meadows that announces chalk quite clearly. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse of the Common Weal of This Realm of England We have not to go far in the perusal of the Dialogue before we find a clue to the date to which the conversation must be referred. The first sentence (p. 13, I. 3) contains an allusion to the King's Highness' Commission touching enclosures. The great commis sion on this burning question, previous to 1565, had been in 1 548. In the June of that year six commissioners were appointed1 to hold inquests in several of the midland counties where the practice of enclosing the commons to pasture sheep was carried to the greatest extent. The commission had been issued in the hope of allaying the popular discontent which had already taken shape in the Cornish insurrection. It did not have the desired effect, however, for in some counties the proceedings of the Commissioners appear to have given an excuse for outbreaksz, and in the following summer the people brake out partly for enclosures, and partly for religion, into an open and formidable insurrection in most counties in England There are several allusions to social disturbances in the Dialogue, and they are said by one speaker to be due to enclosing (p. 48, l. And by another to disputes on matters of religion (p. 21, l. The conversation, if it was an actual occurrence, must have taken place after the issue of the Enclosure Commission of 1548. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Real Life in England The following pages contain a few sketches of real life in England. They portray incidents which illustrate the condition of the laboring classes in an agricultural district, and especially the relation which exists, in more favored instan ces, between these classes and the parochial cler gy in the Established, Church. I hope that it will not be deemed obtrusive, if, in stating my con nexion with this little volume, I present such reminiscences of the society to which it relates, as occur to me after several years' absence. It has seemed to me that a few brief notices of what I myself saw and observed, might render it more. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Tennyson That was in England which at that time was not England as it is today, all one kingdom under a single ruler, but was divided into many bits of kingdoms each with its own king and all warring against each other. Arthur's kingdom was the most unpeaceful of all. This was because for twenty years or more, ever since the death of old King Uther, the country had been without a ruler. Old King Uther had died about a score of years before without leaving an heir to the throne, and all the nobles of the realm had immediately gone to war with one another each trying to get the most land and each trying to get the throne for himself. Book The Commentaries on the Laws of England of Sir William Blackstone Vol 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Commentaries on the Laws of England of Sir William Blackstone Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by William Blackstone and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commentaries on the Laws of England was a four volume set intended to bring England's common law into a realm of understanding for the average citizen. The second volume, presented here, details the rights of 'things'. Blackstone's work was credited as being the first since the Middle Ages to methodically examine the laws of England. His work is credited with helping to lay the foundation for the American legal system. This volume examines the laws surrounding property and ownership. It is the longest volume of the set, and deals extensively with real property as well as chattel property. The work is presented without an introduction, but is preceded by a table of contents and concluded with a detailed index. As it was upon its original publication, The Commentaries on the Laws of England remains a surprisingly readable text. It is for this reason that Blackstone's work became so influential in the first place, as this feature made his books accessible by the layperson. While the first volume of the set may prove more interesting for some readers, as it details the rights of persons, this volume is still fascinating for its insight into a feudal society's perspective of property. The Commentaries on the Laws of England was a monumental text upon its original publication, and remains a work of great historical significance. Anybody interested in legal history, particularly in the British or American realms, will find this to be an important and fascinating read.
