Book This is Your Brain on Music

Download or read book This is Your Brain on Music written by Daniel Levitin and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of The Changing Mind and The Organized Mind comes a New York Times bestseller that unravels the mystery of our perennial love affair with music ***** 'What do the music of Bach, Depeche Mode and John Cage fundamentally have in common?' Music is an obsession at the heart of human nature, even more fundamental to our species than language. From Mozart to the Beatles, neuroscientist, psychologist and internationally-bestselling author Daniel Levitin reveals the role of music in human evolution, shows how our musical preferences begin to form even before we are born and explains why music can offer such an emotional experience. In This Is Your Brain On Music Levitin offers nothing less than a new way to understand music, and what it can teach us about ourselves. ***** 'Music seems to have an almost wilful, evasive quality, defying simple explanation, so that the more we find out, the more there is to know . . . Daniel Levitin's book is an eloquent and poetic exploration of this paradox' Sting 'You'll never hear music in the same way again' Classic FM magazine 'Music, Levitin argues, is not a decadent modern diversion but something of fundamental importance to the history of human development' Literary Review

Download or read book The Music Book written by Dave O'Leary and published by . This book was released on 2017-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does music mean? Can it be more than the sum of its notes and melodies? Can it truly change you? Rob, a musician turned reluctant music critic, poses these questions as everything important in his life appears to be fading--memories of lost love, songs from his old bands, even his hearing. He delves into the music of others to find solace and purpose, and discovers that the chords and repeated phrases echo themes that have emerged in his own life. The music sustains him, but can it revive him? The Music Book is a story of loss, of fear and loneliness, of a mutable past. But most of all it's about music as a force, as energy, as a creator of possibility. What might come from the sound of an A chord played just so? Rob listens. And among other things, he finds surprising companionship with a cat; another chance at love; and the courage to step on a stage again and finally, fully comprehend the power of sound.

Download or read book Music s Making written by Michael Cherlin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a work of musical theory, or meta-theory, Music's Making draws extensively on work done in philosophy and literary criticism in addition to the scholarship of musicologists and music theorists. Music's Making is divided into two large parts. The first half develops global attitudes toward music: emergence out of self and hearing through (drawing on Kabbalah and other sources), middle-voice (as discussed in philosophical phenomenology), liminal space (as discussed in literary theory), an ethics of intersubjectivity (drawing on Levinas), and character, canon, and metaleptic transformations (drawing chiefly on Harold Bloom). The second half embodies a search for metaphors, figurative language toward understanding music's endlessly variegated shaping of time-space. The musicians and scholars who inform this part of the book include Pierre Boulez, Gilles Deleuze, Anton Webern, Morton Feldman, and James Dillon. The book closes with an extended inquiry into the metaphors of horizontal and vertical experience and the spiritual qualities of musical experience expressed through those metaphors.

Book Shatters of My Broken Heart

Download or read book Shatters of My Broken Heart written by YaRonnica Harris-Wright and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-11-23 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION The following literature was derived from when I was younger and making attempts to be in love only to grow older and realize that all along, I was only in love with a thought. I was in love with the idea of being in love, just imagining the cozy comforting feelings of all the elements that love possesses within one's heart shared with another. Desires to fulfill the urges inside of M3 that wanted so vulnerably to care for a young lady demonstrating the actions of a gentleman, being that I am a girl, I call myself a Gentlewoman. I live to provide for special ladies in my life. The affectionate compassion of my hearts' mentality is only to show that there is good in relationships, there is love in hearts, there are truths in words and there is trust in promises. Though my intentions were miraculous, I've been taking for granted, branded and broken down, but stand strong to this day; you'll be Auhmazed to hear through it all, what I've found. With the Shatters of My Broken heart, I present to you, My Music Book of Poetry. This is my music book of poetry emotions that hung pain over M3, speak of my exes, they ain't over M3. How I made it, that's how it's posed to be. I only dared to let certain ones get close to M3. They played my love, say I broke their hearts, scarred my emotions, blamed M3 that we're apart, and still is in denial that I loved em from the start. But my angel fell from the stars at the time I stopped looking for love. I thank the lord, now I can't be without her, I can't give her up. This is my music book of poetry, loves that really tried to lower M3. My ex females live by no loyalty, all I wanted was love and in return I would spoil thee. Instead they left M3 with crazy stories that dropped my heart from a building of endless stories. I can chuck up the deuces counting my few exes that weren't worthy. Oh yea, in God I trust I had no worries. All my focus now is to get this money and provide for my family, cuz at the end of the day I know I only have God, My Love, them and M3. Enjoy this Journey as you explore My mind.
