Download or read book Run Toby Run written by Jimmie Allen and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-04-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle to late 1950s, I lived in the Brewster Projects that were infested with gang activities. In order to survive being beat up, you were encouraged to participate or be a part of a gang. There were two things I was good at; fighting was one, and running was the other. Both got me out of some tough situations. The Brewster Project recreation center was right in the area of the Brewster's twelve-story apartment buildings populated by a gang called the Russians. I spent a lot of time at the center, which was a short distance from my house. I learned to swim there, took boxing there, even learned to ice skate there. The Russians was to many to fight; running was my best option until I joined the baby Russians. The school I attended was in the area of the gang called the Angels. I eventually found myself being a part of both gangs. Running and ducking allowed me to escape being found out until my family moved out of the area. Running kept me out of more trouble than fighting. The story is based on my ability to avoid potential deadly situations.

Download or read book Run Run Run written by Jack Hoffman and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intertwining the details of Abbie Hoffman's intense personal life with the movement politics of the sixties, seventies, and eighties, Dan Simon writes Abbie's story from the point of view of his younger brother Jack, creating a full and poignant portrait of one of the geniuses of the 1960s counterculture. From the creation of the Yippies! in 1967 and the tumult of the 1968 Democratic National Convention protests, to the humor and agony of the Chicago conspiracy trial, the scandal of Abbie's 1973 cocaine bust, and his six and a half years as a fugitive, to his reemergence as environmentalist "Barrie Freed' and his final struggle with manic-depressive illness, this biography offers a compelling examination of the contradictions that make Abbie Hoffman such a compelling figure. With the information and affection only a brother could bring to the complexities of Abbie's life, Hoffman and Simon portray Abbie's public persona alongside his private aspirations and fears, romances, and enduring family relationships.

Download or read book The Worship of Walker Judson written by Janice Strubbe Wittenberg and published by Spiral Publishing. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Young Walker Judson has a grand secret. He sees light emanating from and surrounding other folks. Soul shadows, the boy terms them. Years later, as director of The Living Light Healing Center, he meets the hunchback, Lauren Finch, and straightens her spine. She's seduced by his charisma, becomes his devout assistant, and ultimately transforms into a powerful healer in her own right. When all goes awry, even as Lauren's faith is challenged, even as others abandon Walker, she remains steadfast. But how far is she willing to go to prove her devotion, and what will it take for her to peel off the blinders and trust her own strengths? And so, is Walker Judson truly a healer-gone-bad or a saintly soul whose paranormal talents are misunderstood? Ultimately, you, the reader must decide. Today's news is rife with stories of physical and emotional abuse on the part of Catholic priests, Buddhist monks, as well as school teachers and sports coaches. Furthermore, cults such as the People's Temple, at the behest of their leader, Jim Jones, require followers to commit mass suicide. On another vein, politicians, athletes, and entertainers, Bill Clinton, Anthony Weiner, Tiger Woods, and Michael Jackson--to name a few--violate the trust of family and supporters, destroying lives in the process. So why are tales of manipulation and abuse so rampant among the powerful? Then again, why are followers so easily swayed that they cast aside common sense and discernment? The Worship of Walker Judson, an award winning novel, explores the misuse of power and the ease with which seekers relinquish it. Psychic phenomena, cultism, mystics and madmen, the retelling of the Christ story in the context of the persecuted healer, along with the role of personal choice versus karmic destiny are also examined in this novel.

Book excerpt: The buyers find us. Establish their bona fides. Then, and only then, we run. Burdon Lane is a businessman living out the American Dream in a shiny suburb of Washington, D.C. His business card lists him as Executive VP of UniArms, Inc., a legitimate arms dealer that's a front for a gunrunning empire. His girlfriend thinks he's a salesman. His best friend thinks he's a role model. His boss thinks he's a good soldier. This weekend's run should be business as usual -- guns for money, money for guns -- moving the product north on the Iron Highway from Dirty City to Manhattan. But this weekend is going to teach Burdon something he doesn't yet know about who he is . . . and isn't. When the meet in Manhattan turns into a five-alarm fire and an all-out war on the tenth floor of a New York hotel, there is only one way out: an uneasy alliance with a hard case named Jinx and the street gang known as the U Street Crew. And once the heat is on, with a cadre of killers and every police officer and Federal agent on the eastern seaboard on their tail, Burdon gets the chilling sensation that, one way or another, this so-called milk run may be his last. This is the story of the last run, the run where no one -- criminal, cop, or civilian -- is who or what they seem. Douglas E. Winter's debut novel blasts into the dark heart of America's culture of guns and violence with breathtaking velocity. Run is a streamlined tour de force of full-throttle action and high-tech weaponry, a brilliantly controlled ride through America's most brutal terrain, with a surprising moral message -- fantastically harrowing, relentlessly cinematic, impossible to look away from.
