Book Trolling Ourselves to Death

Download or read book Trolling Ourselves to Death written by Jason Hannan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost forty years ago, Neil Postman argued that television had brought about a fundamental transformation to democracy. By turning entertainment into our supreme ideology, television had recreated public discourse in its image and converted democracy into show business. In Trolling Ourselves to Death, Jason Hannan builds on Postman's classic thesis, arguing that we are now not so much amusing, as trolling ourselves to death. Yet, how do we explain this profound change? What are the primary drivers behind the deterioration of civic culture and the toxification of public discourse? Trolling Ourselves to Death moves beyond the familiar picture of trolling by recasting it in a broader historical light. Contrary to the popular view of the troll as an exclusively anonymous online prankster who hides behind a clever avatar and screen name, Hannan asserts that trolls have emerged from the cave, so to speak, and now walk in the clear light of day. Trolls now include politicians, performers, patriots, and protesters. What was once a mysterious phenomenon limited to the darker corners of the Internet has since gone mainstream, eroding our public culture and changing the rules of democratic politics.Hannan shows how trolling is the logical outcome of a culture of possessive individualism, widespread alienation, mass distrust, and rampant paranoia. Synthesizing media ecology with historical materialism, he explores the disturbing rise of political unreason in the form of mass trolling and sheds light on the proliferation of disinformation, conspiracy theory, "cancel culture," and digital violence. Taking inspiration from Robert Brandom's innovative reading of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Trolling Ourselves to Death makes a case for building "a spirit of trust" to curb the epidemic of mass distrust that feeds the plague of political trolling.

Book The 30 Trials of Ix and the Angels

Download or read book The 30 Trials of Ix and the Angels written by Mark Durant and published by . This book was released on 2004-09 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 30 Trials of Ix and the Angels follows Ix Pantheos from his awakening in a ruined castle through his travels to the moon, the sun, and beyond, carried along by the songs of thirty angels as they initiate him into the mysteries of consciousness and the nature of existence. The answer seemingly found and the journey apparently nearing its end, Ix then finds that he must suffer the destruction of his former self, and face a new struggle to hold onto all that was revealed to him. Born of a series of meditations performed by the author, and utilizing an eclectic mix of various world religious and occult philosophies, the story is a surreal journey into the depths of the mind, echoing Ix's own quest to redeem both himself and mankind. While it stands alone as an engaging read for those unacquainted with the various schools of inquiry that comprise the fertile field within which it took root, it retains that symbolism which may prove insightful to like-minded readers who find themselves treading its obscure paths.

Download or read book Skinny Legs and All written by Tom Robbins and published by Bantam. This book was released on 2003-06-17 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Arab and a Jew open a restaurant together across the street from the United Nations.... It sounds like the beginning of an ethnic joke, but it's the axis around which spins this gutsy, fun-loving, and alarmingly provocative novel, in which a bean can philosophizes, a dessert spoon mystifies, a young waitress takes on the New York art world, and a rowdy redneck welder discovers the lost god of Palestine--while the illusions that obscure humanity's view of the true universe fall away, one by one, like Salome's veils. Skinny Legs and All deals with today's most sensitive issues: race, politics, marriage, art, religion, money, and lust. It weaves lyrically through what some call the "end days" of our planet. Refusing to avert its gaze from the horrors of the apocalypse, it also refuses to let the alleged end of the world spoil its mood. And its mood is defiantly upbeat. In the gloriously inventive Tom Robbins style, here are characters, phrases, stories, and ideas that dance together on the page, wild and sexy, like Salome herself. Or was it Jezebel?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What all of humankind has learned in the past about creation is the way that existence isn't -- a paradox! ""I, Vywamus, think that this (Mahatma) is the most important thing that's happened on your Earth and for humanity."" Awaken and realize that all of humankind will create a ""body for ascension,"" whether this is accomplished now or later. This is not the exclusive domain of Christ or Buddha or many others who have ascended -- this is your birthright. You are not relegated to worshipping those who have already done this very basic initiation called ascension. Christ and Buddha would be the first to acknowledge that they are just beginners on their eternal journeys. When humans lift the veils of their unworthiness and recognize that they are the sons of God, that there is divine equality and no one is greater than another, then you will have begun your journey in the way that it was intended. In your near future, your Planetary Hierarchy will release the world from theology, ecclesiasticism, and the wrathful Jehovah and return humanity to its rightful journey into spiritualizing matter, not worshipping it! The Mahatma is for those who are motivated to search for the answers that can respond to their mental and spiritual bodies. In the past, humankind's choices of beliefs and religions have supported only the emotional body and the darker, material side of life. And truly, if humankind is going to remain on Earth, very drastic shifts of consciousness will be required in Earth's new four-dimensional reality. No matter how contrary to your current beliefs, this book contains methods for creating your spiritual lightbody for ascension, and it also explains your eternal journey in a way that was never before available to humankind."

Book Olaf Stapledon

Download or read book Olaf Stapledon written by Robert Crossley and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1994-07-01 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Olaf Stapledon is best remembered for the extraordinary works of speculative fiction he published between 1930 and 1950. As a novelist, he was known as the spokesman for the Age of Einstein and has influenced writers as diverse as Virginia Woolf, Arthur C. Clarke, and Doris Lessing. This biography is the first to draw on a vast body of unpublished and private documents—interviews, correspondence, archival material, and papers in private hands—to reveal fully the internal struggles that shaped Stapledon's life and reclaim for public attention a distinctive voice of the modern era. Late in his life in an unpublished "letter to the future" Stapledon unwittingly provided the rationale for his biography: "It is just possible that my very obscurity may fit me to speak more faithfully for my period than any of its great unique personalities. A pacifist in World War I, an advocate of European unity and world government, one of the first teachers in the Workers' Educational Association, and an early protestor against apartheid, Stapledon turned utopian beliefs into practical politics. With roots in the shipping worlds of Devon, Liverpool, and the Suez Canal, he was transformed from a self-described provincial on the margins of English literary and political life into a visionary idealist who attracted the attention of scientists, journalists, and novelists, and, given his left-wing political affiliations, even the F.B.I. Stapledon's novels—Last and First Men, Star Maker, Odd John, and Sirius—have gathered a passionate following, and they have seldom been out of print in the last twenty-five years. But the personal experiences and political commitments that shaped this creative work have, until now, barely been known. Robert Crossley's work reveals how, in public and in private, in his social activism as in his fiction, Olaf Stapledon embodied many of the modern era's anxieties and hopes that allow his works to continue to speak to and for the future.

Book Vows Veils and Masks

  • Author : Beth Wynstra
  • Publisher : University of Iowa Press
  • Release : 2023-07-07
  • ISBN : 1609389034

Download or read book Vows Veils and Masks written by Beth Wynstra and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vows, Veils, and Masks offers a bold and timely approach to the plays of Eugene O’Neill with its attention to the engagements, weddings, and marriages so crucial to the tragic action in O’Neill’s works. Specifically, the book examines the culturally sanctioned traditions and gender roles that underscored marital life in the early twentieth century, and that still haunt and define love and partnership in the modern age. Weaving in artifacts like advice columns, advertisements, theatrical reviews, and even the lived experiences of the actors who brought O’Neill’s wife characters to life, Beth Wynstra points to new ways of seeing and empathizing with those who are betrothed and new possibilities for reading marriage in literary and dramatic works. She suggests that the various ways women were, and still are, expected to divert from their true ambitions, desires, and selves in the service of appropriate wifely behavior is a detrimental performance and one at the crux of O’Neill’s marital tragedies. This book invites more inclusive and nuanced ways of thinking about the choices married characters must make and the roles they play, both on and off the stage.

Book Tagore Einstein and the Nature of Reality

Download or read book Tagore Einstein and the Nature of Reality written by Partha Ghose and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of a selection of scholarly essays from literature, philosophy and history on the conception of reality as understood by Rabindranath Tagore and Albert Einstein. The nature of reality has been a long-debated issue among scientists and philosophers. Tagore (1861–1941) met Einstein (1879–1955) at the latter’s house in Kaputh, Germany on 14 July 1930 and had a long conversation on this issue. This conversation has been widely quoted and discussed by scientists, philosophers and scholars from the literary world. The important question that Tagore and Einstein discussed was whether the world is a unity dependent on humanity, or the world is a reality independent of the human factor. Einstein believed that reality is independent of the mind and the human factor. On the other hand, Tagore adopted the opposite view. Nevertheless, both Einstein and Tagore claimed to be realists — their conceptions of reality were obviously fundamentally different. Where does the difference lie? Can it be harmonized at a deeper level? This volume brings together for the first time a gamut of views on this subject from eminent scholars. It presents some key reflections on reality, language, poetry, truth, science, personality, human sciences, virtue ethics, intelligibility and creativity. It will be useful to scholars and researchers of philosophy, literature, history and political studies, as also to those interested in Tagore.
