He is cast into a life-and-death struggle against the dark forces of the Ebenmoloch and the followers of the ancient Canaanite god, Baal. Charles learns two other men from Earth crossed into the land before him. Ian, a blacksmith from the American Revolution, and Nathanael, a preacher from the 1730s, help Charles in the fight. Much to their surprise, the Ebenmoloch has the aide of two individuals from Earth as well; a mechanical-eyed Hessian soldier and the beautiful warrior, Golden Dawn. THE DOOR BETWEEN THE TREES asks if love can endure time and separation. It probes what happens in the heart of a man cut off from his world and all he knows. Can a heart in bondage to lust find genuine love? Can reason withstand the dilemmas of time dilation and Einstein's relativity, amidst a conflict of good and evil? Can one man make a difference?

  • Author : Peter Eisenstadt
  • Publisher : Cornell University Press

Download or read book Rochdale Village written by Peter Eisenstadt and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 1963 to 1965 roughly 6,000 families moved into Rochdale Village, at the time the world's largest housing cooperative, in southeastern Queens, New York. The moderate-income cooperative attracted families from a diverse background, white and black, to what was a predominantly black neighborhood. In its early years, Rochdale was widely hailed as one of the few successful large-scale efforts to create an integrated community in New York City or, for that matter, anywhere in the United States.Rochdale was built by the United Housing Foundation. Its president, Abraham Kazan, had been the major builder of low-cost cooperative housing in New York City for decades. His partner in many of these ventures was Robert Moses. Their work together was a marriage of opposites: Kazan's utopian-anarchist strain of social idealism with its roots in the early twentieth century Jewish labor movement combined with Moses's hardheaded, no-nonsense pragmatism.Peter Eisenstadt recounts the history of Rochdale Village's first years, from the controversies over its planning, to the civil rights demonstrations at its construction site in 1963, through the late 1970s, tracing the rise and fall of integration in the cooperative. (Today, although Rochdale is no longer integrated, it remains a successful and vibrant cooperative that is a testament to the ideals of its founders and the hard work of its residents.) Rochdale's problems were a microcosm of those of the city as a whole—troubled schools, rising levels of crime, fallout from the disastrous teachers' strike of 1968, and generally heightened racial tensions. By the end of the 1970s few white families remained.Drawing on exhaustive archival research, extensive interviews with the planners and residents, and his own childhood experiences growing up in Rochdale Village, Eisenstadt offers an insightful and engaging look at what it was like to live in Rochdale and explores the community's place in the postwar history of America's cities and in the still unfinished quests for racial equality and affordable urban housing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Travers Corners, if visited by a dedicated urbanite, would be seen as nothing more than a windblown gas station of a town that would make the middle of nowhere look like Metropolis. It’s a town of 329 beloved residents, from Dolores, who runs the beauty parlor, to Junior McCracken, the worst fisherman to never give up the sport, to Judson C. Clark, boatbuilder and Carrie Creek’s occasional guide. But Travers Corners is more than just a gas station of a town. It’s a destination for fly fishing—a paradise made of the finest trout waters ever seen, with rivers and creeks sweeping past cattle ranches, tall grasses, and off into the timbered mountains. In Scott Waldie’s Return to Travers Corners are stories of small town friendships and fights, of famous fishermen and unlucky anglers, of trout so big they’re practically mythical, and of the ones that got away—in love and on the water. The tales of Travers Corners hearken to a simpler, more enticing world of wild places, good deeds, and the friends made along the way. Book Kim Kardashian s Marriage

Download or read book Kim Kardashian s Marriage written by Sam Riviere and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2015-02-03 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 72 poems in Kim Kardashian's Marriage mark out equally sharpened lines of public and private engagement. Kim Kardashian's 2011 marriage lasted for 72 days, and was seen by some as illustrative of celebrity life as a performance, as spectacle. Whatever the truth of this (and Kardashian's own statements refute it), Sam Riviere has used the furor as a point of ignition, deploying terms from Kardashian's make-up regimen to explore surfaces and self-consciousness, presentation and obfuscation. His pursuit is toward a form of zero-privacy akin, perhaps, to Kardashian's own life, that eschews a dependence upon confessional modes of writing to explore what kind of meaning lies in impersonal methods of creation. The poems have been produced by harvesting and manipulating the results of search engines to create a poetry of part-collage, part-improvisation. The effect is as refractive as it is reflective, and disturbs the slant on biography through a bricolage of recycled and cross-referenced language, until we are left with a pixellation of the first person.
