Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirteenth Annual Report of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society: Of the Methodist Episcopal Church, for the Year 1882 The Thirteenth Annual Meeting of the General Executive Committee of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church convened in Wesley Hall, Philadelphia, November 1, 1882. The added months of interregnum had not only augmented the contributions, but their effect was also shown in increased zeal and enthusiasm. Most thoughtful arrangements had been made for the comfort of the delegates, while the cordial welcome and hospitable entertainment, given with "sisterly" love, will always make the recollection of the sojourn in the friendly city a pleasant memory. At this meeting the work and responsibility, always arduous, pressed heavily, which made the devotional meetings sources of peculiar strength and refreshment, and the hour spent in this manner each day was one of especial interest and help. The mornings were given to the business sessions of the meeting, the afternoons to the presentation of different foreign fields, by some of the missionaries present, or discussing plans of home work, from the various visitors who were familiar with the subject. This was carried on without any of the delegates, who were busy in committee work, but all joined in the devotional hour that followed. The business meetings were greatly assisted by having a President and Secretary "to the manner born." The anniversary was held on Sabbath evening, November 5th, in Arch Street Church, and was one of unusual interest. Bishop Hurst presided. His introduction of the Society, reviewing its methods and its success, was very happily done, and showed hearty sympathy and approval. Deep interest was manifested in the summing up of the eighteen months' work by the Secretary, Mrs. Gracey. It was clear, comprehensive, and encouraging. The addresses were given by Rev. Davisson, of Nagasaki, Japan, Miss Delia Howe, of Kiu Kiang, China, and Mrs. Mary T. Lathrop, of Michigan; thus bringing the work of the Society, at home and abroad, vividly before the large audience. The exercises were interspersed with fine music.
