Book Postfire Mortality of Ponderosa Pine and Douglas fir

Download or read book Postfire Mortality of Ponderosa Pine and Douglas fir written by James F. Fowler and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review focused on the primary literature that described, modeled, or predicted the probability of postfire mortality in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii). The methods and measurements that were used to predict postfire tree death tended to fall into two general categories: those focusing on measuring important aspects of fire behavior, the indirect but ultimate cause of mortality; and those focusing on tissue damage due to fire, the direct effect of fire on plant organs. Of the methods reviewed in this paper, crown scorch volume was the most effective, easiest to use, and most popular measurement in predicting postfire mortality in both conifer species. In addition to this direct measure of foliage damage, several studies showed the importance and utility of adding a measurement of stem (bole) damage. There is no clear method of choice for this, but direct assessment of cambium condition near the tree base is widely used in Douglas-fir. Only two ponderosa pine studies directly measured fine root biomass changes due to fire, but they did not use these measurements to predict postfire mortality. Indirect measures of fire behavior such as ground char classes may be the most practical choice for measuring root damage. This review did not find clear postfire survivability differences between the two species. The literature also does not show a consistent use of terminology; we propose a standard set of terms and their definitions.

Book A Field Guide to Site Identification and Interpretation for the Vancouver Forest Region

Download or read book A Field Guide to Site Identification and Interpretation for the Vancouver Forest Region written by R. N. Green and published by Ministry of Forests, Research Program. This book was released on 1994 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide presents site identification and interpretation information for forest ecosystems of the Vancouver Forest Region. Site identification is based on the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification. The guide was prepared to assist users in describing and identifying forest sites and to provide management interpretations to assist users in preparing stand-level forest management prescriptions. The guide covers procedures for site assessment, a description of the biogeoclimatic units and the site units of the Vancouver Forest Region, management interpretations of tree species selection, slashburning, site productivity, competing vegetation potential, ground-based harvesting, pest risks of major conifer species, and wildlife diversity and habitat relationships. Appendices list indicator species; humus forms; keys to bedrock, hand-texturing soil, relative soil moisture regime, soil nutrient regime, and site sensitivity to slashburning; correlation of old and new biogeoclimatic and site units; and a site assessment form.

Book Silviculture Prescription Data Collection Field Handbook

Download or read book Silviculture Prescription Data Collection Field Handbook written by Michael Patrick Curran and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide is a technical support document intended to help forestry practitioners collect the information they need to prepare a silvicultural treatment regime and silviculture prescription in accordance with British Columbia Forest Practices Code legislation. It deals primarily with the collection & stratification of site-specific field data. After information on office preparation, stratification, plot establishment, and mapping procedures, the guide presents data collection procedures for silviculture prescription field forms. Copies of forms are included in the appendix. The data cover such matters as site characteristics, understorey & overstorey, soils, riparian & watershed values, soil & fire hazards, silvicultural systems & objectives, harvesting, forest health, stand tending, and forest resource values.

Book Site quality Evaluation Site quality Maintenance and Site specific Management for Forest Land in Northwest Ontario

Download or read book Site quality Evaluation Site quality Maintenance and Site specific Management for Forest Land in Northwest Ontario written by Willard H. Carmean and published by Thunder Bay : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Northwest Science and Technology. This book was released on 1996 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual is directed toward the evaluation and classification of forest land in north-west Ontario for timber production, with the primary objective of providing tools for a quantitative evaluation of the capability of forest land to produce tree growth. The first few chapters describe methods for estimating forest site quality, including direct methods based on measuring site index from standing trees and indirect methods based on soil and topographic features. The manual also provides a complementary framework showing relationships between site quality, forest-landscape classification, and growth and yield. This framework accommodates other land values that are in addition to timber production. A final chapter suggests how application of this integrated framework can produce a diversified forest landscape having a spectrum of management intensities, a variety of site-specific silvicultural practices, and a variety of forest land values and uses.
