Download or read book Atherosclerosis Diet and Drugs written by Arnold Eckardstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-02 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular diseases continue to be the leading cause of death in the - jority of industrialized countries. The most frequent underlying pathology, namely atherosclerosis, and its clinical sequelae, namely coronary heart d- ease, cerebrovascular disease and peripheral artery disease, remain common although for a long time we have been made aware of avoidable or mo- ?able etiological factors such as smoking, fat-rich diet or lack of exercise, and although these adverse lifestyle factors have been extensively addressed by population-wide primary prevention programs. Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality also remain high despite successful anti-hypertensive and lipid lowering drug therapies which help to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality by about 30% in both secondary and tertiary prevention settings. This can partly be explained by the increasing life expectancy and growing p- portionofelderly people, especiallyinEuropeandNorthAmerica. Inaddition, the World Health Organization makes the alarming prediction that probably in response to the spreading of western dietary behavior and lack of exercise resulting in an increasing prevalence of diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypert- sion, cardiovascular diseases rather than infectious diseases will become the most frequent cause of death worldwide. This volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology entitled “Atherosclerosis” is divided into four parts and intends to give an overview on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, established treatment and prevention regimen, and of perspectives for the development of new treatment modalities.

Book Evidence based Management of Lipid Disorders

Download or read book Evidence based Management of Lipid Disorders written by Maud N Vissers, and published by tfm Publishing Limited. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practising evidence-based medicine necessarily depends on the clinician having access to the best evidence available, but in a fast-moving field, keeping up to date with the latest developments is a challenging prospect. In this new volume, leading experts focus on the most important clinical issues associated with the management of lipid disorders, evaluating and interpreting the evidence available to provide the reader with a reliable summary of our current knowledge. Topics covered include therapeutical strategies for managing hereditary lipid disorders, including familial hypercholesterolemia, both in adults and children, and familial combined hypercholesterolemia. The authors also evaluate the evidence for a link between inflammatory disease and cardiovascular risk; the metabolic syndrome and the interconnections between dyslipidemias and diabetes. They also look at therapeutic challenges such as the management of patients who are statin resistant, and the control of lipid levels in those suffering renal insufficiency. Tables highlight important data, evidence from trial results and expert reports, and each section concludes with a series of key points that present a summary of evidence-based recommendations for best practice, graded according to the quality of that evidence. Evidence-based Management of Lipid Disorders provides the busy clinician with a unique analysis of the data supporting current therapies and will help the reader formulate effective strategies for treating their own patients.
