Book Theory of Computing and Systems

Download or read book Theory of Computing and Systems written by Danny Dolev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-05-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ISTCS '92, the Israel Symposium on the Theory of Computing and Systems, cameabout spontaneously as a result of informal interaction between a group of people who viewed the conference as an appropriate expression of Israeli strength in theoretical aspects of computing and systems. The enthusiasm that the symposium created resulted in the submission of a large number of extremely high quality papers, which led in turn to strict acceptance criteria. This volume contains nineteen selected papers representing the cream of Israeli talent in the field, on a variety of active and interesting topics in the theory of computing and systems.

Book excerpt: Thepapersinthisvolumewereselectedforpresentationatthe10thInternational Computing and Combinatorics Conference (COCOON 2004), held on August 17–20, 2004 in Jeju Island, Korea. Previous meetings were held in Xi’an (1995), HongKong(1996),Shanghai(1997),Taipei(1998),Tokyo(1999),Sydney(2000), Guilin (2001), Singapore (2002), and Big Sky (2003). In response to the call for papers, 109 extended abstracts were submitted from 23 countries, of which 46 were accepted. The submitted papers were from Belgium (1), Canada (5), China (6), France (1), Germany (6), Hong Kong (8), India (6), Iran (1), Ireland (1), Israel (4), Italy (2), Japan (17), Korea (23), Mexico (3), New Zealand (1), Poland(1), Russia (1), Singapore (5), Sweden (2), Switzerland (3), Taiwan (2), the UK (1), and the USA (9). Each paper was evaluated by at least three program committee members, with the assistance of referees, as indicated by the referee list found in these proceedings. There were many more acceptable papers than there was space available in the conference schedule, and the program committee’s task was extremely di?cult. In addition to selected papers, the conference also included threeinvitedpresentationsbyLarsArge,JeongHanKim,andKokichiSugihara. We thank all program committee members and their referees for their - cellent work, especially given the demanding time constraints; they gave the conference its distinctive character. We thank all who submitted papers for c- sideration: they all contributed to the high quality of the conference. Finally, wethankallthepeoplewhoworkedhardtoputinplacethelogistical arrangements of the conference — our colleagues and our graduate students. Download or read book Satisfiability Problem written by Dingzhu Du and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The satisfiability (SAT) problem is central in mathematical logic, computing theory, and many industrial applications. There has been a strong relationship between the theory, the algorithms, and the applications of the SAT problem. This book aims to bring together work by the best theorists, algorithmists, and practitioners working on the sat problem and on industrial applications, as well as to enhance the interaction between the three research groups. The book features the applications of theoretical/algorithmic results to practical problems and presents practical examples for theoretical/algoritmic study. Major topics covered in the book include practical and industial SAT problems and benchmarks, significant case studies and applications of the SAT problem and SAT algorithms, new algorithms and improved techniques for satisfiability testing, specific data structures and implementation details of the SAT algorithms, and the theoretical study of the SAT problem and SAT algorithms.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a survey of the subject in the form of a collection of articles written by experts, that together provides a comprehensive guide to research. The editors'aim has been to provide an accessible description of the current stae of complexity theory, and to demonstrate the breadth of techniques and results that make this subject so exciting. Thus, papers run the gamut from sublogarithmic space to exponential time, and from new combinatorial techniques to interactive proof systems.

Book Combinatorics of Genome Rearrangements

Download or read book Combinatorics of Genome Rearrangements written by Guillaume Fertin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey of a rapidly expanding field of combinatorial optimization, mathematically oriented but offering biological explanations when required. From one cell to another, from one individual to another, and from one species to another, the content of DNA molecules is often similar. The organization of these molecules, however, differs dramatically, and the mutations that affect this organization are known as genome rearrangements. Combinatorial methods are used to reconstruct putative rearrangement scenarios in order to explain the evolutionary history of a set of species, often formalizing the evolutionary events that can explain the multiple combinations of observed genomes as combinatorial optimization problems. This book offers the first comprehensive survey of this rapidly expanding application of combinatorial optimization. It can be used as a reference for experienced researchers or as an introductory text for a broader audience. Genome rearrangement problems have proved so interesting from a combinatorial point of view that the field now belongs as much to mathematics as to biology. This book takes a mathematically oriented approach, but provides biological background when necessary. It presents a series of models, beginning with the simplest (which is progressively extended by dropping restrictions), each constructing a genome rearrangement problem. The book also discusses an important generalization of the basic problem known as the median problem, surveys attempts to reconstruct the relationships between genomes with phylogenetic trees, and offers a collection of summaries and appendixes with useful additional information.

Book Distributed Algorithms

Download or read book Distributed Algorithms written by Nancy A. Lynch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-04-16 with total page 899 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Distributed Algorithms, Nancy Lynch provides a blueprint for designing, implementing, and analyzing distributed algorithms. She directs her book at a wide audience, including students, programmers, system designers, and researchers. Distributed Algorithms contains the most significant algorithms and impossibility results in the area, all in a simple automata-theoretic setting. The algorithms are proved correct, and their complexity is analyzed according to precisely defined complexity measures. The problems covered include resource allocation, communication, consensus among distributed processes, data consistency, deadlock detection, leader election, global snapshots, and many others. The material is organized according to the system model—first by the timing model and then by the interprocess communication mechanism. The material on system models is isolated in separate chapters for easy reference. The presentation is completely rigorous, yet is intuitive enough for immediate comprehension. This book familiarizes readers with important problems, algorithms, and impossibility results in the area: readers can then recognize the problems when they arise in practice, apply the algorithms to solve them, and use the impossibility results to determine whether problems are unsolvable. The book also provides readers with the basic mathematical tools for designing new algorithms and proving new impossibility results. In addition, it teaches readers how to reason carefully about distributed algorithms—to model them formally, devise precise specifications for their required behavior, prove their correctness, and evaluate their performance with realistic measures.
