This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the life and times of Lionel Ricardo Barrow II. If it were up to me, I would have been dead on May 20, 2003. All I broke was my left elbow and right femur. The Lord still kept me alive and I kept writing. There were still things I needed to do and that is how I see it. Then my nephew stood me up and I get into a car accident that was not my fault at 3 AM on October 28, 2018 when I was two exits away from home. I broke my left leg and right ankle. The Lord still kept me alive and then I wrote this memoir. Even still, there is a lot more to the story. I am a doomed cat from the start that should have not been born and this is a manual on when not to have kids.

Daphne lives a life of structure and routine. It's the only way to keep her demons at bay. But when she has to let lose at her friend's bachelorette party, her demons prove to be a little closer to the surface than she realizes. She has to choose between holding onto the past, or embracing a future of uncertainty. And the one person that makes her feel safe in a sea of chaos is the one person that could ruin her. Rob Hunter has demons of his own. He lives a life of no strings attached encounters, traveling from one city to the next, with nothing to hold him in place. But there's something missing from his life, eating away at his happiness. When a girl he never got the chance to claim shows up during his brother's bachelor party, he's not going to let the opportunity to have her slide through his fingers again. The only problem is that this girl is more than just a pretty face and a way to keep his bed warm at night. She's playing for keeps, and that's one game he's not sure he can win. But what happens when second chances fade away too? Can third chances stick?

Book A Culture of Second Chances

Download or read book A Culture of Second Chances written by David M. Newman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the iconic presence of second chances in everyday life. David Newman explores its various iterations in popular culture, commercial marketplaces, religion, intimate relationships, education, criminal justice, and human bodies. He analyzes how this concept—as a cultural aspiration, driver of policy, and lived personal experience—has become part and parcel of our individual sense of self and our collective national identity. While the rhetoric of redemption is familiar and ubiquitous, Newman uncovers the costs and constraints of second chances, paying particular attention to the factors that affect judgments of deservedness. Informed by an array of data sources including personal interviews, mission statements of nonprofit recovery agencies, images in popular culture, stories from the news, plot summaries of novels, and scriptural texts, Newman frames the second chance experience as the quintessential cultural paradox: a concept that simultaneously represents the pinnacle of our shared hopes for renewal and our deepest suspicions about the intransigence of human nature.

Book Unequal Chances

  • Author : Samuel Bowles
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2009-10-15
  • ISBN : 1400835496
  • Pages : 315 pages

Download or read book Unequal Chances written by Samuel Bowles and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the United States "the land of equal opportunity" or is the playing field tilted in favor of those whose parents are wealthy, well educated, and white? If family background is important in getting ahead, why? And if the processes that transmit economic status from parent to child are unfair, could public policy address the problem? Unequal Chances provides new answers to these questions by leading economists, sociologists, biologists, behavioral geneticists, and philosophers. New estimates show that intergenerational inequality in the United States is far greater than was previously thought. Moreover, while the inheritance of wealth and the better schooling typically enjoyed by the children of the well-to-do contribute to this process, these two standard explanations fail to explain the extent of intergenerational status transmission. The genetic inheritance of IQ is even less important. Instead, parent-offspring similarities in personality and behavior may play an important role. Race contributes to the process, and the intergenerational mobility patterns of African Americans and European Americans differ substantially. Following the editors' introduction are chapters by Greg Duncan, Ariel Kalil, Susan E. Mayer, Robin Tepper, and Monique R. Payne; Bhashkar Mazumder; David J. Harding, Christopher Jencks, Leonard M. Lopoo, and Susan E. Mayer; Anders Björklund, Markus Jäntti, and Gary Solon; Tom Hertz; John C. Loehlin; Melissa Osborne Groves; Marcus W. Feldman, Shuzhuo Li, Nan Li, Shripad Tuljapurkar, and Xiaoyi Jin; and Adam Swift.
