Grace Martin intends to find out as she stumbles from one life lesson to another. With a peculiar but supportive guide and mentor named Mrs. Pettermint, Grace slowly breaks free of traditional family and religion, and courageously explores life, relationships and various spiritual traditions seeking the answers to life's big questions. Finally, just when she thinks she might have it all figured out, her beloved mentor dies leaving her nearly $60 Million Dollars. However the only way to claim that inheritance and find the peace she longs for is for Grace to face the critics of her past, the betrayals of the present, and her doubts for the future. Finding Grace shows that in today's world it is possible to be spiritual without being religious. And for many women, the path to grace is often being willing to celebrate ourselves exactly as we already are.

Download or read book Cruel to Be Kind written by Rebecca Branton and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-09-18 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wish to share with you my journey through physical, sexual and mental abuse both whilst growing up and within the domestic abuse during my marriages and how I found the courage to leave despite the challenges and lack of confidence. I want to share the traumatic arrivals of my children each having their own story and the challenges of parenthood in a turbulent marriage. By drawing a line under my old life and the realisation of how much history had repeated itself, was truly a difficult lesson that I was to learn No longer could I think about what had been, or what will be. Freedom was precious to me but it came with a price. It came with the realization of how much I hid from myself. The realisation that I had become a prisoner in my own world, that I wanted to be free. I wanted to live in the moment, to live life to the full and grab it with both hands and shake the hell out of it, to feel peace every night, and not apologies for being me. When you think you have nothing you have everything, all you truly need is love and courage.

Book excerpt: A compassionate, shame-free guide for your darkest days “A one-of-a-kind book . . . to read for yourself or give to a struggling friend or loved one without the fear that depression and suicidal thoughts will be minimized, medicalized or over-spiritualized.”—Kay Warren, cofounder of Saddleback Church What happens when loving Jesus doesn’t cure you of depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts? You might be crushed by shame over your mental illness, only to be told by well-meaning Christians to “choose joy” and “pray more.” So you beg God to take away the pain, but nothing eases the ache inside. As darkness lingers and color drains from your world, you’re left wondering if God has abandoned you. You just want a way out. But there’s hope. In I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die, Sarah J. Robinson offers a healthy, practical, and shame-free guide for Christians struggling with mental illness. With unflinching honesty, Sarah shares her story of battling depression and fighting to stay alive despite toxic theology that made her afraid to seek help outside the church. Pairing her own story with scriptural insights, mental health research, and simple practices, Sarah helps you reconnect with the God who is present in our deepest anguish and discover that you are worth everything it takes to get better. Beautifully written and full of hard-won wisdom, I Love Jesus, But I Want to Die offers a path toward a rich, hope-filled life in Christ, even when healing doesn’t look like what you expect.

Download or read book Hoosiers in the Heartland written by Marty Pieratt and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of stories I wrote when my family was young and the world was more naive. This is a record of life in and around the Heartland before 9/11. These are some stories I told that people seemed to remember. My heroes have always been storytellers, like the late Charles Kuralt of CBS’s On The Road and Sunday Morning. He was inspired by the great Hoosier war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Today, there’s the great American raconteur Bob Dotson. Not long ago when the NBC Today Show reporter spoke to a group of our students at Indiana University, he reminded us of the wonderful stories that have made our country great. He said to remember, “The reason you got here is because of all those who came before.” We are not cut from one cloth, he said. He’s not talking about retelling the day-to-day murder, mayhem and politics journalists must cover, but looking under rocks and beside creeks to find stories about folks who work hard, play hard and pray hard. These are people who fly under the celebrity radar, but who are the sturdy foundation of our country. A lot of folks like that can be found in Indiana. I’ll never be able to take you on the remarkable journeys that Bob does with his words, but I can share what it is about Indiana people, places and things that I’ve come to hold dear in my world. Much of it revolves around my family, which is probably a lot like yours. What I wrote was the mood and passion of my heart at that time, in that place. It is true that precious people and things reveal themselves in passing from us. I’d like to share some of my precious memories from the past. Maybe it will stir your memories and help encourage us all to appreciate the here and now.

Download or read book From Tragedies to Happiness written by Lori M. Radosny and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-02-28 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Tragedies to Happiness: My True Stories is a memoir of my life. I have been through five tragedies that I describe in the book-they are being molested as a child, suffering from deep depression, a suicide attempt, deaths of my parents and brother, Walt, and bankruptcy. I was thinking one day, that I have been through a lot of tragedies in my life, and I am still a happy person today. I wrote the book to let people know that even though they go through one or more tragedies in their life, they can move forward and lead a happy life, as I have. If another tragedy strikes, take care of it the best way you know how and again move forward. I discuss in detail each tragedy. I also have included two-line rhymes regarding the health-care field. I wrote about seventy of them in three days. They just kept coming to me. I also parody some songs that I have adapted to include the health-care field. I have as Chapter 1, the love story of myself and Dave Herzig. We have been together for twenty-five years after meeting in a summer Friday night bowling league in 1989, and we are more in love today than when we first fell in love with each other in 1989. I found a man who loves me when I thought nobody ever would. I made Dave wait 167 days until our first "romantic session." He could have left, but he waited for me. He didn't know why I wanted to wait. I needed to know that I could trust him first. He didn't know about my molestation when I was nine years old. I feel the book will help others, and that is why I wrote it.

Download or read book Ask a Manager written by Alison Green and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of the popular website Ask a Manager and New York’s work-advice columnist comes a witty, practical guide to 200 difficult professional conversations—featuring all-new advice! There’s a reason Alison Green has been called “the Dear Abby of the work world.” Ten years as a workplace-advice columnist have taught her that people avoid awkward conversations in the office because they simply don’t know what to say. Thankfully, Green does—and in this incredibly helpful book, she tackles the tough discussions you may need to have during your career. You’ll learn what to say when • coworkers push their work on you—then take credit for it • you accidentally trash-talk someone in an email then hit “reply all” • you’re being micromanaged—or not being managed at all • you catch a colleague in a lie • your boss seems unhappy with your work • your cubemate’s loud speakerphone is making you homicidal • you got drunk at the holiday party Praise for Ask a Manager “A must-read for anyone who works . . . [Alison Green’s] advice boils down to the idea that you should be professional (even when others are not) and that communicating in a straightforward manner with candor and kindness will get you far, no matter where you work.”—Booklist (starred review) “The author’s friendly, warm, no-nonsense writing is a pleasure to read, and her advice can be widely applied to relationships in all areas of readers’ lives. Ideal for anyone new to the job market or new to management, or anyone hoping to improve their work experience.”—Library Journal (starred review) “I am a huge fan of Alison Green’s Ask a Manager column. This book is even better. It teaches us how to deal with many of the most vexing big and little problems in our workplaces—and to do so with grace, confidence, and a sense of humor.”—Robert Sutton, Stanford professor and author of The No Asshole Rule and The Asshole Survival Guide “Ask a Manager is the ultimate playbook for navigating the traditional workforce in a diplomatic but firm way.”—Erin Lowry, author of Broke Millennial: Stop Scraping By and Get Your Financial Life Together

Download or read book Hyperbole and a Half written by Allie Brosh and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2013-10-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New York Times Bestseller “Funny and smart as hell” (Bill Gates), Allie Brosh’s Hyperbole and a Half showcases her unique voice, leaping wit, and her ability to capture complex emotions with deceptively simple illustrations. FROM THE PUBLISHER: Every time Allie Brosh posts something new on her hugely popular blog Hyperbole and a Half the internet rejoices. This full-color, beautifully illustrated edition features more than fifty percent new content, with ten never-before-seen essays and one wholly revised and expanded piece as well as classics from the website like, “The God of Cake,” “Dogs Don’t Understand Basic Concepts Like Moving,” and her astonishing, “Adventures in Depression,” and “Depression Part Two,” which have been hailed as some of the most insightful meditations on the disease ever written. Brosh’s debut marks the launch of a major new American humorist who will surely make even the biggest scrooge or snob laugh. We dare you not to. FROM THE AUTHOR: This is a book I wrote. Because I wrote it, I had to figure out what to put on the back cover to explain what it is. I tried to write a long, third-person summary that would imply how great the book is and also sound vaguely authoritative—like maybe someone who isn’t me wrote it—but I soon discovered that I’m not sneaky enough to pull it off convincingly. So I decided to just make a list of things that are in the book: Pictures Words Stories about things that happened to me Stories about things that happened to other people because of me Eight billion dollars* Stories about dogs The secret to eternal happiness* *These are lies. Perhaps I have underestimated my sneakiness!
