Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a viable product for many different markets, one of which is energy development due to its unique properties related to electrical conductivity. One specific area of promise is the use of vertically aligned CNT's in supercapacitors. The CNT synthesis is a two-step process with the first being the formation of a thin film layer. The thin film substrate is created by means of the Thermal Evaporation Physical Vapor Deposition (TPVD) process and is performed within a high vacuum chamber. The layer deposit is monitored by a quartz crystal microbalance. The nanoparticle thin film substrate, ranging in thickness, is synthesized using a transition metal which acts as the nucleation points for CNT growth. After the thin film substrate is deposited, the CNT's are grown in a Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) chamber. Analysis of the thin film substrate and CNTs is performed primarily using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The measurements of the nanoparticles' diameters and CNTs' dimensions are carried out by image analysis program ImageJ. The results show the inclusion of ultrapure water in the CVD process contributed to the success of CNT growth. The CNT formation differs between silver thin film deposited on silicon substrate and iron thin film deposited on alumina (Al2O3) substrate. The focus of this thesis project is to explore and investigate different materials and conditions for optimal CNT synthesis in the hopes of creating a uniform forest of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes.

Book excerpt: Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) have been studied extensively because of their extraordinary electronic properties. Due to the unique relationship of bandgap and physical width, GNRs have become one of the most promising candidates for electronic devices. Current GNR synthesis methods usually incorporate unzipping of carbon nanotubes, which is difficult to control. Template growth synthesis is presented as a novel idea to create GNRs in a controllable manner without using harsh chemicals. The objective of this project was to learn more about the mechanism and feasibility of template synthesis as a means to produce GNRs. In this project, metallic carbon nanotubes were used as template to synthesize GNRs. First, a thin film of nanotubes was deposited on desired substrates, and then they were subjected to plasma etching to convert into an amorphous structure. The samples were then annealed with and without a carbon source as an attempt to produce GNRs. Atomic force microscopy measurements showed that nanotube height decreased and width increased after annealing, which suggests that a planar structure may have formed, such as graphene. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy showed that after annealing, there was a slight increase in the G' peak with respect to the G peak as well as a slight right-shift of the G' band, which both indicate the presence of graphene structure. Future work will be to perform electrical measurements and transmission electron microscopy to further verify the presence of GNRs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotube films were grown by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition (MWCVD). Through controlling the thickness of the iron thin film, carbon nanotubes with different diameters were obtained. When the thickness of the iron layer was reduced to 0.3-0.5 nm, single-wall and double-wall nanotubes were obtained with a high areal density (~ 1012/cm2) and vertical alignment. Scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy were employed to characterize the as-deposited nanotubes. In addition, a systematic study of the internal structure transition of the carbon nanotubes has been conducted and a growth model was proposed in terms of carbon surface and bulk diffusion. The field emission of the carbon nanotube films has also been explored in this study. Different measurement systems including a variable distance field emission system, a field emission imaging system, and a field electron emission system (FEEM) were employed. The effects of the diameter (multi-wall vs single- and double- wall), the adsorbates, and the temperature on the field emission properties of carbon nanotubes have been exhibited. Finally, two processes including hydrogen plasma etching and re-growth were used to treat the as-deposited film, and an increased emission site density was observed for the re-grown carbon nanotube film.

In this thesis, bulk synthesis of high quality SWCNT and MWCNT using Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) is reported. Purification of the nanotubes was simply performed in one step - both metallic particles and the catalyst support were dissolved in 4M HCl acid. This thesis also describes a smart materials application of nanotubes. Carbon Nanofiber (CNF) Hybrid actuators and CNT Hybrid actuators are being developed for use in liquid as well as dry environments by the Smart Structures Bio-Nanotechnology Laboratory at UC. Part of this development was carried out as part of this thesis. The actuators operate based on the electrochemical actuation property of nanotubes. The actuator for use in the liquid electrolyte was fabricated by a combination of solvent casting and melt mixing to disperse CNF in Poly-Methylmethacrylate (PMMA), and thin films of the material were cast. An electrochemical actuator was formed by placing the CNF-PMMA composite film in a 2M NaCl solution. To form a dry actuator, a Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE) film was prepared from PMMA, LiBF4, Propylene Carbonate (PC), and ACN Acetonitrile (ACN) by the solution casting method. The contribution of this thesis was to set up a simple Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) experiment to test the actuators in liquid and dry environments at voltages up to 10 volts. Further testing was done using new instrumentation in which the actuator tip displacement was measured using a laser displacement sensor. The EIS testing was carried out to characterize the electrochemical properties of CNF Hybrid actuator.

Book excerpt: Transparent conducting thin films of metal oxides, doped metal oxides, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), have been produced using various deposition techniques, including: Aerosol Assisted Chemical Vapour Deposition (AACVD), Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapour Deposition (APCVD), and Spray Coating. The resultant thin films were tested for their performance in a number of applications, including: Low emissivity ('Low-E') glazing, photovoltaic electrode materials, gas sensing and photocatalysis. AACVD was shown as a viable, and attractive, deposition technique for the synthesis of tin oxide, and doped tin oxide thin films, which allows for controllable doping levels, crystallinity, and surface structure. The tailoring of these physical attributes allows for enhanced performance of the functional properties of the films, whereby, a lower growth temperature produced highly transparent, highly conductive coatings with a low haze value for 'Low-E' applications, whereas, higher growth temperatures produced the high electrical conductivity, transparency, and light scattering properties required for high performance electrodes in thin film photovoltaics. In addition, a dual coating methodology was developed using both AACVD, and APCVD, to grow tin oxide thin films in a rapid timescale, but with modified surface structures showing changes to the short range waviness, kurtosis, and the surface area. Growth of carbon nanotubes, using CVD, was investigated over a range of metal catalysts, with varying Pauling electronegativity values, and over a range of temperature, methane, and hydrogen conditions. A growth mechanism has been postulated, whereby, the electronegativity of the metal catalyst, and the solubility and diffusion of the carbon through that catalyst, affects the type and properties of the carbon structure produced. To the authors knowledge, this is the first reported growth of MWCNTs using a chromium solo-metal catalyst, and the first reported growth of the unique 'carbon nanofibres' which were produced using gold and silver metal catalysts. Functionalisation of SWCNTs using a microwave reflux process was shown to yield sulphonate and sulphone modified nanotubes, which are highly soluble in water and able to undergo spray coating to produce carbon nanotube, nanonet transparent conducting thin films. The functionalisation process was shown to be reversible upon heating of the modified nanotubes. AACVD has been deemed unable to produced doped zinc oxide transparent conducting films. However, undoped zinc oxide films were produced. They displayed a high photocatalytic action in the degredation of stearic acid, and a UV light induced superhydrophilicity. The modification and deposition techniques, established throughout this work, were utilised to form transparent, hybrid, metal oxide-CNT coatings, for gas sensing. The hybrid materials displayed enhanced response times to combustible target gases, which has been attributed to the catalytic effects of the exposed carbon nanotube surfaces; and to the spillover of adsorbed oxygen from the active nanotubes to the metal oxide surface.
