Book They re Called the Throwaways

Download or read book They re Called the Throwaways written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School communities identified these children as the “throwaways”-children who often experienced bullying, abuse, foster care, juvenile detention, and special education services. In this book, children with learning differences engage in artmaking as sensemaking to deepen their understanding of what it means to live on the margins in U.S. public K-12 schools. Their artmaking calls upon educators, school leaders, and policymakers to actively engage in addressing the injustices many of the children faced in school. This book is revolutionary. For the first time, children with learning differences, teachers, staff, and school leaders come together and share how they understand the role artmaking as sensemaking plays in empowering disenfranchised populations. Together, they encourage school community members to examine pedagogical practices, eliminate exclusive policies, and promote social justice-oriented work in schools. Their artmaking inspires new ways of knowing and responding to the lived experiences of children with learning differences. They hope their work encourages school communities to make authentic connections to improve their learning, capacity to love others, and of most importantly, to value oneself. Authors’ first-tellings capture the human experience of navigating through oppressive educational systems. Authors urge us to consider what it means to be empathic and to engage in the lives of those we serve. Their truths remind us to that standing still should never be an option.

His latest work, GINGERS, is story of murder, intrigue and international espionage set in the unlikely setting of Lake Hockey, Wisconsin. GINGERS is Dennis's fifteenth novel to be published with Xlibris. It is the tale of a specialized kind of mayhem, the slaying of redheads. Because it contains so many clues, some of them red herrings and others legitimate, there is little else that can be said about the book, without giving away major plot points. "The only thing safe to say is that its main character and romantic lead is a redheaded girl named Tessa," Havens says. "For anything more, you'll have to read the book."

Book Bridges between Cultures

Download or read book Bridges between Cultures written by Tomasz Kalaga and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centred on the metaphor of bridges and knots, this volume investigates the dialogic and dialectical relationships between socially dissimilar and topographically distant cultures. The contributions here explore various methodological frameworks for discourses and theories that purport to conceptualize cultural spaces, which – as opposed to objective, geographical areas – are characterized by the propensity to bind topographical distances by means of symbolic ties and perimeters. The chapters address possible juxtapositions and intersections of spatial and temporal dimensions of cultural practice, religious and ethical “ties and knots” between lands and cultures, disconnections between historical, literary and cultural epochs, discourses of cultural entanglement and cultural ensnarement on individual and social levels, and the possibilities of raising aesthetic bridges between various cultures in music, poetry and visual arts, among other topics.

Book Held by God

  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Held by God written by Lori Phillips and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we find hope that carries us through the difficulties in life? At some point all of us face times of hardship, suffering, and despair that can turn our lives upside down and break our hearts wide open. During these trials we may feel alone, overwhelmed by circumstances, and afraid that God has abandoned us. In the fog of adversity, we hold our broken hearts in our hands and cry out to God, Why? How could you let this happen? Where were you? Catastrophe can shake the stability of our world, leaving us to wonder about Gods love for us, and raising even more questions. Why am I suffering? Will this trial ever end? How will I get through this? Does God even see me? In Held by God, the authors share their own struggle with these questions as the family travels an uncertain road through three serious medical challenges; catamenial pneumothorax, renal artery stenosis, and cancer. Written in a conversational style that weaves Biblical truths throughout the narrative, the book intertwines the authors story with the accounts of Job, Paul, and King David, among others, to provide unique examples of Gods unchanging character. Understanding Gods faithfulness and recognizing his provision, allows us to find rest during times of turmoil and gives us a hope that endures.

Book Dream Chasers

Download or read book Dream Chasers written by John Tirman and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the immigration battle plays out in America, from curriculum disputes to federal raids to the civil rights activism of young “Dreamers.” Illegal immigration continues to roil American politics. The right-wing media stir up panic over “anchor babies,” job stealing, welfare dependence, bilingualism, al-Qaeda terrorists disguised as Latinos, even a conspiracy by Latinos to “retake” the Southwest. State and local governments have passed more than 300 laws that attempt to restrict undocumented immigrants' access to hospitals, schools, food stamps, and driver's licenses. Federal immigration authorities stage factory raids that result in arrests, deportations, and broken families—and leave owners scrambling to fill suddenly open jobs. The DREAM Act, which would grant permanent residency to high school graduates brought here as minors, is described as “amnesty.” And yet polls show that a majority of Americans support some kind of path to citizenship for those here illegally. What is going on? In this book, John Tirman shows how the resistance to immigration in America is more cultural than political. Although cloaked in language about jobs and secure borders, the cultural resistance to immigration expresses a fear that immigrants are changing the dominant white, Protestant, “real American” culture. Tirman describes the “raid mentality” of our response to immigration, which seeks violent solutions for a social phenomenon. He considers the culture clash over Chicano ethnic studies in Tucson, examines the consequences of an immigration raid in New Bedford, and explores the civil rights activism of young “Dreamers.” The current “round them up, deport them, militarize the border” approach, Tirman shows, solves nothing.
