Book excerpt: How long can you pretend to be okay? And when do you start fighting for yourself? Over a year ago the life Victoria (Tori) Adams had vanished. The cheerleader, the happy daughter, the extrovert-they all disappeared the night Tori attempted suicide. In an effort to save her, her parents moved her from the dry deserts of Arizona to a small coastal town in Connecticut. Now she's standing on a frozen, desolate beach, constantly afraid to say the wrong thing to her mom, hiding the dark thoughts that plague her mind, and fighting to stay. When Tori discovers a secret room in her new house and its connection to the slightly-annoying-but-definitely-cute Nick Janus from auto shop class, she's stuck between a painful past and torturous present. But as time passes and relationships deepen, Tori realizes that even though she's still alive, she has a lot to learn about living. They Didn't Know is a gripping, coming of age YA novel that deals with life after attempted suicide.

Andrea Rodríguez is nine years old when her mother whisks her and her brother, Pablo, away from Woronoco, the tiny Massachusetts factory town that is the only home they’ve known. With no plan and no money, she leaves them with family in the mountainside villages of Puerto Rico and promises to return. Book The Five Things You Didn t Know About Addictions

Download or read book The Five Things You Didn t Know About Addictions written by Shane Cuthbert and published by Shane Cuthbert. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our entire lives, we’ve always been taught to stay away from things like drugs because they are addictive. Their addiction is said to be due to the chemicals they contain, but how about things like gambling? Gambling does not contain chemicals. So how can a behaviour, rather than a chemical, be addictive? But more important questions re – why is it that certain people become addicted and other not? Why do people become more addicted at certain times of their lives than others? And once you’re an addict – are you always an addict or can you change? Basically, if you’ve ever wondered how addictions work and, more importantly, how to break them – then you’re in the right place. It all comes back to the way in which we learn to feel. Whether it’s an induction to one of my online courses or a book – one of the first little pieces of awareness I like to direct people’s attention to, is the way in which our unconscious mind learns to feel. And that is through transference, which basically refers to the concept that feelings ‘rub off’. The classic example marketers use are things like celebrity endorsements. They take a known face that people already have existing feelings towards. When that celebrity endorses a brand with repetition, some of those feelings ‘rub off’ onto the bran. And they rub off onto additional product lines and so forth. This is why, when a celebrity becomes embroiled in a sex scandal or some kind of controversy, all the advertisers pull their sponsorships. They don’t want negative feelings to transfer. The lesson is this. Feelings ‘rub off’. Certain feelings more so than others but we are going to get to the bottom of this throughout the book.

Book excerpt: A lot of professors give talks titled 'The Last Lecture'. Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them: What wisdom would we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy? When Randy Pausch, a computer science professor at Carnegie Mellon, was asked to give such a lecture, he didn't have to imagine it as his last, since he had recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer. But the lecture he gave, 'Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams', wasnt about dying. It was about the importance of overcoming obstacles, of enabling the dreams of others, of seizing every moment (because time is all you have and you may find one day that you have less than you think). It was a summation of everything Randy had come to believe. It was about living. In this book, Randy Pausch has combined the humour, inspiration, and intelligence that made his lecture such a phenomenon and given it an indelible form. It is a book that will be shared for generations to come.

Book We Were Rich and We Didn t Know It

Download or read book We Were Rich and We Didn t Know It written by Tom Phelan and published by Gallery Books. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “You don’t have to be Irish to cherish this literary gift—just being human and curious and from a family will suffice.” —Malachy McCourt, New York Times bestselling author of A Monk Swimming In the tradition of Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes and Alice Taylor’s To School Through the Fields, Tom Phelan’s We Were Rich and We Didn’t Know It is a heartfelt and masterfully written memoir of growing up in Ireland in the 1940s. Tom Phelan, who was born and raised in County Laois in the Irish midlands, spent his formative years working with his wise and demanding father as he sought to wrest a livelihood from a farm that was often wet, muddy, and back-breaking. It was a time before rural electrification, the telephone, and indoor plumbing; a time when the main modes of travel were bicycle and animal cart; a time when small farmers struggled to survive and turkey eggs were hatched in the kitchen cupboard; a time when the Church exerted enormous control over Ireland. We Were Rich and We Didn’t Know It recounts Tom’s upbringing in an isolated, rural community from the day he was delivered by the local midwife. With tears and laughter, it speaks to the strength of the human spirit in the face of life’s adversities.
