Book excerpt: Spirituality. Everyone interprets it differently. There are as many interpretations as there are individuals on Earth. It is a very personal experience, and by its very nature, subjective. Whatever one's belief or non-belief, one cannot deny that there is something more to our existence. Whether it is in relation to a powerful deity overseeing our lives, or a force of energy evolving our development, or even the thought that we cannot be the sole form of intelligent life in the universe (or are we?), our pre-occupation with "finding ourselves" and determining our "purpose" or "place" propels us to seek answers. This book takes a glimpse into "the other side." Where do we go when we die? Where were we before we were born? Through the story of Angel Gabriel, the author takes us through the concepts of who we are, why we are here, and how to overcome life's constant challenges and break the karmic cycle to evolve into an enlightened, serene being. Peace and contentment is possible...even here on Earth.

Book Growing Up Severely Autistic

Download or read book Growing Up Severely Autistic written by Kate Rankin and published by Jessica Kingsley Pub. This book was released on 2000 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gabriel is a teenager who is severely autistic: he is completely unsocialized, is incontinent and is unable to speak. In this book his mother, with great honesty, describes what it is like to bring up an autistic child who requires constant care and exhibits challenging behaviour.Written partly in diary form, Growing Up Severely Autistic covers the minutiae of daily life with vivid immediacy, from preventing Gabriel eating the goldfish, to helping him through his grief on the death of his father. Gabriel's life and relationships with his family are traced from early childhood, through his school days to his entry into residential care at the age of 17. With affection and humour, Kate Rankin has written a personal and intimate study of someone who is very different from those around him, and who cannot himself articulate his experiences.

Book Call Me American

Download or read book Call Me American written by Abdi Nor Iftin and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abdi Nor Iftin first fell in love with America from afar. As a child, he learned English by listening to American pop and watching action films starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. When U.S. marines landed in Mogadishu to take on the warlords, Abdi cheered the arrival of these Americans, who seemed as heroic as those of the movies. Sporting American clothes and dance moves, he became known around Mogadishu as Abdi American, but when the radical Islamist group al-Shabaab rose to power in 2006, it became dangerous to celebrate Western culture. Desperate to make a living, Abdi used his language skills to post secret dispatches, which found an audience of worldwide listeners. Eventually, though, Abdi was forced to flee to Kenya. In an amazing stroke of luck, Abdi won entrance to the U.S. in the annual visa lottery, though his route to America did not come easily. Parts of his story were first heard on the BBC World Service and This American Life. Now a proud resident of Maine, on the path to citizenship, Abdi Nor Iftin's dramatic, deeply stirring memoir is truly a story for our time: a vivid reminder of why America still beckons to those looking to make a better life.

Book The Return of Gabriel

  • Pages : 167 pages

Download or read book The Return of Gabriel written by Richard V. Shriver and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2005-11-03 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of letters is a continuation of my earlier collection, The Gabriel Letters. I stumbled on the idea of writing imagined letters from an archangel advising a young guardian, while reading an introduction to C. S. Lewis Screwtape Letters. It has been a marvelous way perhaps delusional of standing back and imagining that I can see the world through angel eyes. The amazing result for me has been a sense of objectivity and good will. The intended purpose of the letters is to apply to all things the idea of Gods complete love (self-sacrificing, eternal, parent-like love). This idea is the center of Christianity. It is Jesus message, and it is St. Pauls good news. If we desire to be Christian, we should begin, it seems to me, by attempting to apply Jesus teachings to all things: to our behavior; to our human relationships, especially family; to our work and our business dealings; to the way we run our churches; and to the way we study the scriptures. If we take Jesus seriously, we must reevaluate much of the Bible the parts which are not specifically the teachings of Jesus. Jesus, Himself, questioned much of the scriptures. These letters cover a variety of subjects, many of them Biblical. Some Biblical passages need correction in light of Jesus ideas. Some Biblical passages are so marvelous that we need to lift them to the sky and shout, Look at this! Some Biblical passages are confusing, and we need to wrestle with them. But in all, we should be trying to see them through Jesus eyes. To see through Jesus eyes is, I suspect, what the true Gabriel wants, and it is the intent of this book. - Richard V. Shriver

Book The Ice Maiden s Tale

Download or read book The Ice Maiden s Tale written by Lisa Preziosi and published by Xist Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every town has an old lady all the children just know is a witch. When Johanna and Casper must spend the afternoon at her house, there’s nothing to do, except listen to a story. While the siblings await their mother’s return from the hospital where she’s visiting their ailing father, Mrs. Kinder reads them a story of adventure, magic and music. Mrs. Kinder’s mysterious golden book tells an intertwined tale of two young men—the sensitive Sculptor who carves a beautiful woman from ice and the thieving Sorcerer searching for a spell that will bring the statue to life. The story twists and turns, from the Frozen Forest, to the land of the Lemon Trees, to the home of the Swamp Witch, as the Sculptor’s and Sorcerer’s adventures circle each other. Their inevitable confrontation reveals buried memories that force each of them to confront the true cost of love and redemption. The Ice Maiden's Tale the perfect story-within-a-story with magic, adventure and romance reminiscent of The Princess Bride for a new generation of readers. Excerpt: Mrs. Kinder settled herself in the chair across from the children and cracked open the book. She adjusted her spectacles, ever so slightly, then caressed the page with her wrinkled fingers. “In our world, when magic happens outside of a storybook, we call it a miracle. And miracles are considered so rare and special that lifetimes can go by without so much as a hint of one. But there are faraway places where our kind of miracles are as common as blades of grass in an open field. In the northern region of one of these worlds, in the top far east corner, past green forests, swamps, lakes, and even an ocean, there lived a young artist named Gabriel.” .... “This isn’t a very good story.” Casper complained. "Casper!” Johanna exclaimed in embarrassment. Mrs. Kinder laughed. “That’s because I’m not even at the story part yet, but it’s high time we get started. This story doesn’t begin, the way you think it might and the way most stories do. It doesn’t begin with a big adventure or a journey, or even pirate treasure. It starts with a tiny choice—one that seems unremarkable at the time, but that changes the course of destiny. One crisp morning, our Gabriel decided to search for firewood—and it’s with that simple decision that our tale begins.”
