Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A spirited Southern family saga” from the acclaimed author of The Ice House: “Fans of Fannie Flagg will enjoy this novel” (The Plain Dealer). Once enlivened by the trade in Palm Sunday palms and moonshine, Utina, Florida, hasn’t seen economic growth in decades, and no family is more emblematic of the local reality than the Bravos. Deserted by the patriarch years ago, the Bravos are held together in equal measure by love, unspoken blame, and tenuously brokered truces. The story opens on a sweltering July day, as Frank Bravo, dutiful middle son, is awakened by a distress call. Frank dreams of escaping to cool mountain rivers, but he’s only made it ten minutes from the family restaurant he manages every day and the decrepit, Spanish moss–draped house he was raised in, and where his strong-willed mother and spitfire sister—both towering redheads, equally matched in stubbornness—are fighting another battle royale. Little do any of them know that Utina is about to meet the tide of development that has already engulfed the rest of Northeast Florida. When opportunity knocks, tempers ignite, secrets are unearthed, and each of the Bravos is forced to confront the tragedies of their shared past. “An incandescent first novel set in the small town of Utina, Florida, whose inhabitants struggle to balance tradition and progress.” —O, The Oprah Magazine “Intelligence, heart, wit . . . Laura Lee Smith has all the tools and Heart of Palm is a very impressive first novel.” —Richard Russo, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Empire Falls
Download or read book Going to the Crowd written by Marcus Dean and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why didn't somebody tell me all of this stuff, before? My Parents have been married for over 30 years, my siblings have all been married for a while, and people have been getting married left and right. Why couldn't any of them let me know some of what I was getting in to? Is it really that difficult? Is it really that hard to sit down with me for 20 minutes to tell me some of what is in store and what I should be doing to get prepared for this "joyous" occasion? I wrote this book just for you, the reader, to let you know some of what your marriage will entail. Don't forget, it is not all of what you will be dealing with, but it is a great start to what you have to look forward to. You have probably heard about how difficult marriage can be and I am going to line out some of those difficulties. Until I went through some of this stuff myself, I had no idea what was going to be included in my marriage. It really is like walking in a dark room without a flashlight. Well, my friend, here's your flashlight.
Download or read book Grandpa s Soup written by Sepribo Lawson-Jack Ph.D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-12-21 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grandpa’s Soup tells a story for the pleasure, information, and entertainment of the reader. It is a narrative of the author’s memories of growing up in a tiny island village in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in Africa. It was inspired by memories of his grandpa, who passed away while he was still very much in the formative years of his life. They are memories that he considers worth sharing because of the lasting impact they have had on his adult life. The author hopes that the book affords the reader a peek into Kalabari-Ijaw ethnography and culture while not losing its very essence, which is motivational—a motivation engendered by the seemingly innocuous acts of a grandfather that roundly impacted the life of his grandson. Also, he attempted to present the book in a simple prose format for easy readability by a wide range of audiences across cultures and demographics.

Book excerpt: Multicultural fiction. A racial adaptation of Cain and Abel, set to a score of modern Jazz, obsession, and revenge. In 1927 Mississippi, a black tenant farmer?s wife gives birth to unusual twins?Calvin, who is dark, and Joe, who is light enough to pass for white. As they grow up, the boys learn that color is worth more than brotherhood in the Jim Crow South, and they fall into a trap that was set for them by generations of racial discord. After a violent fight, Joe disappears and Calvin is convicted for his murder. In 1949 Joe steps off a bus in New York City, passing himself off as a white man. Birdland has just opened, Jazz is king, and the entertainment industry is in a cold-sweat panic over McCarthy?s Blacklist. Joe finds work as a singer with a bebop band and meets Magda, a Greek studio violinist, who beguiles him with her blue eyes and broken English. Over time, Joe is also drawn into a moth-and-flame bond with black trumpet player Doc Calhoun, who sees through his racial masquerade and warns him of its pitfalls. And at Doc?s side is the unforgettable Pearl, who holds them all together, despite her struggle with heroin addiction. Slowly, Joe?s fear of exposure takes a turn for the irrational. He begins to see his brother in the shadows, and the radio coverage of the HUAC hearings taunts him with its daily question: Are you now or have you ever been . . . ? Bluestone Rondo is a story of life-and-death choices?a Jazz masterpiece of love and hate that leads to two volatile plot twists and one fatal showdown.
Download or read book Business Policy and Participative Decision Making written by Wilson Essien Ph.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2019-07-08 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The glue between efficient productivity and profitability is great decision-making. I do not think that a farmer has ever sown rice and harvested corn. In computers, the most common language is GIGO, meaning garbage in, garbage out. Usually, the decisions we make are our personalities, and yet very few people accept responsibility for their actions, their failures in business, or in any endeavor in which they have failed. They desire to blame others without remembering GIGO. I have articulated the mystery that surrounds the lone decision-maker or the CEO who enjoys lonely decision-making and blaming his or her failures on the engineer or the accountant in his company. The new name for decision-making is participative decision-making. In this, the senior officers take part, but separately—the engineers, accountants, supervisors, workers and maintenance people form another group. Both platforms must have a dialogue format; there must be a writer or clerk, a vote taken on each discussion for its authenticity or viability, and in the end, the senior officers must compare their notes with the second group so that amendments can be made where necessary. The final product is now ready to be presented before the board of directors as a formal decision for the company. In a smaller company, this activity stops with the owner, but the owner must understand that two heads are usually better than one. The CEO and his group must not be taken over by egos; the only time for pride in business is when business is doing well financially. Even then, business needs a lot of careful activity because “pride goes before a fall.” It is good to entrust the CEO with the decision-making responsibility, but it is the biggest risk a business can take because business is a collection of ideas. Therefore, it a discipline of collective learning and inquiry. Any student, manager, or business owner who wants to use participative decision-making skills in his or her business or as a consultant in participative decision-making should attend a workshop at least twice and read about participative decision-making thoroughly and practice it from case studies.
Download or read book Never So Few written by Tom T. Chamales and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set behind enemy lines in Burma, this New York Times bestseller is “easily one of the best novels to come out of World War II” (Los Angeles Times). American soldiers and native Kachin troops battle Japanese forces behind enemy lines in the Burmese jungles. But during the brutal campaign to gain territory in the unforgiving tropical landscape, Captain Reynolds and his band of special operations soldiers and guerrilla fighters struggle to find self-awareness, and even love, in the midst of the trials of combat. One of the youngest officers to serve in Merrill’s Marauders and OSS Detachment 101—precursors to the Green Berets and Central Intelligence Agency—author Tom T. Chamales brings an unparalleled level of authentic detail and raw intensity to this work of fiction based on his real-life experience in the jungles of Southeast Asia. Never So Few is “an extraordinary and powerful book,” unflinching in its portrayal of wartime sacrifice and violence (Kirkus Reviews, starred). The basis for the movie starring Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen, it offers “dramatic, exciting, and concretely detailed accounts of battle action,” and joins the ranks of other classic war novels such as From Here to Eternity and The Naked and the Dead in bringing later generations to the frontlines and into the inner lives of the brave men who served (The New York Times).
Download or read book Grandpa Rules written by Michael Milligan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-04-23 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fourteen years ago, Mike Milligan learned he would become a grandfather for the first time. He was surprised to find that there was little or no information available on what it means to be a grandfather, how to make the most of the experience, and how to be the best grandfather possible. Sure, there were shelves of books dedicated to grandmothers—all with cuddly covers depicting spring bouquets or gentle little lambs. But there was not a single book that spoke to him, a sixty-four-year-old grandfather-to-be. It struck him that there were countless other grandfathers out there experiencing this same feeling of neglect. With over a decade of grandparenting under his belt, Milligan is thrilled to offer his Grandpa Rules. Over the years, Milligan has discovered some universal rules that apply to grandfathers everywhere. For example, the "let it slide" rule has taught him to take it in stride when he hears one of his grandchildren say, "Grandpa sure dresses funny." Imbued with Milligan's humor, honed during his career in comedy writing for television (The Jeffersons, All in the Family, etc.), Grandpa Rules will entertain and delight millions of grandfathers, as well as those who will soon earn the exalted title of "Grandpa." It's the perfect gift for a special grandfather, for Father's Day, a birthday, the birth of a grandchild, or just for a grandpa to read and enjoy during one of his many bathroom visits.
Download or read book Grandpa Seashells written by Jo Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Grandpa Sea Shells' tells the story of three young children who spend a day with their grandparents after their grandfather has been diagnosed with dementia. The book is intended to support conversation at the time of first changes in a relative, a diagnosis of dementia and mild to moderate progression. Families and clinicians have told us this is the time period when they need material to support their explanations to children. Whilst the book could be used to start a conversation about any form of dementia, most of the key symptoms described in this story reflect the typical features associated with the Alzheimer's type, as this continues to be the most common. This book has been designed so that children of between four and ten can read it independently. Ideally it should be used with an adult to facilitate discussion about all aspects of family life and to enhance general emotional wellbeing. The book deliberately makes dementia one of many things going on for this family and highlights things that families can still enjoy together. We have included ideas for positive activities at the end of the book as well as puzzle and description pages that children can enjoy doing with a family member, teacher or clinician.

Book excerpt: To most people, the very word grandma conjures up images of old, blue-haired women in a flower-print apron and wearing sensible shoes in the kitchen, baking cookies. But times have changed. In her book Don't Call Me Grandma! A Guide for the 21st-Century Grandmother, author Ilene Leventhal dispels the stereotype of the so-called typical grandmother. Today's grandmother is so much more. They are socially active and even text and e-mail. They bring a whole new definition of cool, proving once and for all that some things never go out of style. Don't Call Me Grandma! is a handbook for the new generation of grandmothers, as well as mothers and even mothers-in-law. Blue hair has been traded for younger cuts, our baking for trips for fun fast food, and the flower-print aprons for tennis skirts, matching tops, and cute boots. Don't Call Me Grandma! A Guide for the 21st-Century Grandmother shows how to break out of that "old" image, and still bake cookies if you want. You can become someone who knows how to relate to her grandchildren. Your grandchildren will never think of you simply as "grandma" ever again.
