Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New York City in the 1960s is the humming backdrop for this poignant, gritty story about a girl who sees her parents as flawed human beings for the first time, and finds the courage to make a fresh start. Missy’s mother has gone back to school to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. Missy’s father works in advertising and takes Missy on secret midnight excursions to Harlem and the Village so she can share his love of jazz. The two write poems for each other — poems that gradually become an exchange of apologies as Missy’s father’s alcohol and drug addiction begins to take over their lives. When Missy’s mother finally decides that she and her daughter must make a fresh start, Missy has to leave her old apartment, her school, her best friend and her cats and become a latchkey kid while her mother gets a job. But she won’t give up on trying to save her family, even though this will involve a hard journey from innocence to action, and finally acceptance. Based on the events and people of her own childhood, Amanda Lewis’s gorgeous novel is driven by Missy’s irresistible, optimistic voice, buoyed by the undercurrents of poetry and music. Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller and Newbery Honor Book! A gorgeously written, hopeful middle grade novel in verse about a young girl who must leave Syria to move to the United States, perfect for fans of Jason Reynolds and Aisha Saeed. Jude never thought she’d be leaving her beloved older brother and father behind, all the way across the ocean in Syria. But when things in her hometown start becoming volatile, Jude and her mother are sent to live in Cincinnati with relatives. At first, everything in America seems too fast and too loud. The American movies that Jude has always loved haven’t quite prepared her for starting school in the US—and her new label of “Middle Eastern,” an identity she’s never known before. But this life also brings unexpected surprises—there are new friends, a whole new family, and a school musical that Jude might just try out for. Maybe America, too, is a place where Jude can be seen as she really is. This lyrical, life-affirming story is about losing and finding home and, most importantly, finding yourself.

Book These Five Words Are Mine

Download or read book These Five Words Are Mine written by Jennifer Lynne Croneberger and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-12-17 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These Five Words are Mine" is a journey to awareness through the stories of every day life. It embraces the everyday conversations we have with ourselves. It captures the connections we see and those we live with others. It's an ordinary perspective with perhaps different eyes. It's a walk down that familiar road with all the lights on instead of the one we so often take surrounded by darkness. It's a jolt of fresh air when you can't breathe. It's days with a notebook, but not writing so you miss out on what you can't see when your head is down. The words are already so much a part of us, they don't even need to be written. Just felt. Have you ever felt a really deep connection to someone else? To a feeling? To words? Author Jen Croneberger brings awareness into our every day life by connecting us to all of it. Through every day stories, she takes us on a journey. One you will likely relate to as well. It's time to take that walk with eyes wide open. Let's begin" Review: "Far from an ordinary book. It is a friend. If read with an open heart, not only do we realize we are not alone, but we will never look at ourselves and those around us the same."--Daniel Matos, Spoken Word Artist.

Download or read book Words Choices These are the Issues of Life written by Rex Fritchey and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rex digs deep, beneath the surface of superficial understanding of our behavior to show how, VITALLY IMPORTANT, and POWERFUL, the 'words and choices' we use are throughout our lives. Man is a free moral agent created by God to make these choices. GOD'S WORDS and His PROMISES guarantee BLESSINGS applied to our lives. Our words and choices, often idle, corrupt, and selfishly motivated, serves an idle, corrupt, world, void of Godly understanding. Corruption breeds corruption... God's Holiness and God's Righteousness, given freely by Him to ALL believers, produces balance, and "good fruit" in our lives. It's our choice, blessings, OR curses. These choices shape our thoughts, belief system, daily walk, our character, and, ultimately, our FINAL DESTINY...Heaven or hell!

  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Write These Words written by Linda Stender and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a cold Michigan winter night when Linda Stender was woken from a sound sleep. She felt compelled to write a message that she knew was from God. She wrote as fast as she could, and then suddenly, there was no more to write. As she scanned through the barely-legible words, she recognized many biblical truths, partial scripture verses, and promises familiar to her as a follower of Christ. Linda had no idea what God wanted her to do with this message. And so began an unforgettable spiritual journey that carried her through many trials, encounters with those who brought clarity to the words, and years of seeking God’s wisdom. In an uplifting recounting of the message that God placed on her heart, Stender shares real-life stories and experiences that bring His scriptures and words to life and encourages believers to see the depth of His love for them. Through her inspirational writings, she reminds believers that every new sunrise offers a chance to live life to the fullest, that God created each of us to fulfill a special purpose, that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us even during the most difficult times, and much more. Write These Words details an inspirational message from God to uplift believers, encourage spiritual growth, and to trust that He is always beside us.

Book A Functional Grammar of Gooniyandi

Download or read book A Functional Grammar of Gooniyandi written by William B. McGregor and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume sets out to provide a comprehensive description of the grammar of Gooniyandi, a non-Pama-Nyungan language of the southern-central Kimberley region of Western Australia. It covers phonetics and phonology, word phrase and clause structure, and the semantics of closed-class grammatical items. The major focus is, however, on meaning: how do Gooniyandi speakers mean with and in their language. To this end, the theoretical framework of systemic functional grammar, particularly as elaborated in Halliday's recent work, is adopted. Certain refinements to the theory are proposed in order to better account for the Gooniyandi evidence. Of obvious importance to those studying Australian aboriginal languages, this work has an importance to a wider audience for its effective presentation of theory justification.
