Book Guidance on Inventory and Documentation of the Cultural Heritage

Download or read book Guidance on Inventory and Documentation of the Cultural Heritage written by John Bold and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Improved heritage management and the inclusion of heritage in planning and sustainable development processes necessitate inventory and documentation. More than mere scientific tools recommended in international agreements, inventory and documentation play a strategic role. The complexity of the heritage items that now have to be inventoried and their interaction with our everyday living environment require the clear definition and harmonisation of practices at the European level. Through its work in the 1960s, the Council of Europe helped to lay the methodological bases for inventorying architectural, archaeological and movable heritage. The efforts to systematise the process came in answer to the broadening meaning of heritage, and today new considerations lead us to address such notions as heritage groups. The guidelines proposed in this book reflect the work done so far and provide a basis for future research. It is part of a series produced under the Technical Co-operation and Assistance Programme to present the experience derived from the projects implemented by the Council of Europe.

Download or read book Thesaurus Cultus Et Rituum Antiquorum ThesCRA written by and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thesaurus Cultus et Rituum Antiquorum (ThesCRA) is a major multivolume reference work on all known aspects of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman cults and rituals. Providing both sweeping overview and in-depth investigation, ThesCRA covers the period from Homeric times (1000 B.C.) to late Roman times (A.D. 400). The first three volumes, published in 2005, deal with dynamic elements of cult: divination; prayer, gestures, and acts of prayer; gestures and acts of veneration; oaths; maledictions; profanation; magic; and consecration and foundation rites. The last two volumes in the set move on to static elements of cult--cult places and their depictions in antiquity in volume IV, and the personnel of cults in volume V. The major contributors to volume IV are Anneliese Kossatz-Deissmann, Francesco Marcattili, Ulrich Sinn, and Mario Torelli; those for volume V are Stella Georgoudi, Tonio Holscher, Ingrid Krauskopf, Vinciane Pirenne-Delforge, and John Scheid. The index for the five-volume set will be published in August 2006. ThesCRA was developed by the eminent group of scholars who published the eight double-volumes of LIMC (Lexicon Iconographicum Mythologiae Classicae)."

The papers cover a large variety of themes as well as analytical methods. Some papers focus on the primary relics while others deal with the nature and origin of secondary as well as tertiary relics. The first group of papers emphases on the archaeological authenticity of the relics, the second group elucidate the use, additions and manipulations of the relics through the ages. The applied analytical techniques are very divers. Radiocarbon and physical anthropology are the main tools to study the primary relics, while dye analysis, imaging techniques, textile analysis and dendrochronology are used to study the secondary and tertiary relics. Sometimes unexpected techniques, like the analysis of writing ink or the determination of plants and excrements, complete the wide range of analytical methods used to understand the origin, nature and context of the relics. br />Academics as well as professionals working in archaeology, art history, museum labs and conservation sciences will find this an invaluable reference source.
