This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thermodynamics, Heat Motors, and Refrigerating Machines The following work has been prepared to meet a want experienced by myself in my course of instruction in Thermodynamics. After reading several works upon the subject, including those of the founders of the science - Rankine, Clausius, Thomson - I was most favorably impressed with the spirit of Rankine's mode of discussing the subject. It is in keeping with the modern method of treating Analytical Mechanics, in which the analysis is founded upon ideal conditions established by definitions, and the resulting formulas modified to represent the infinite variety of conditions in nature. But Rankine's giant-like processes are not adapted to the wants of the average student. Article 241 of his Steam Engine and other Prime Movers reaches the height of sublimity in regard to terseness, comprehensiveness, and obscurity. Without a proper preliminary, he crowds into a few words a principle which has cost other writers protracted labor and heroic efforts to establish. My aim has not been to bring down the subject to the comprehension of the reader, but to lead him up, by a more easy and uniformly graded path, to the same height, and at the same time familiarize him with the way by a free use of illustrations, exercises, historic references, and numerical examples. Book Mechanical Efficiency of Heat Engines

Download or read book Mechanical Efficiency of Heat Engines written by James R. Senft and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-07-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2007 book presents a developed general conceptual and basic quantitative analysis as well as the theory of mechanical efficiency of heat engines that a level of ideality and generality compatible with the treatment given to thermal efficiency in classical thermodynamics. This yields broad bearing results concerning the overall cyclic conversion of heat into usable mechanical energy. The work reveals intrinsic limits on the overall performance of reciprocating heat engines. The theory describes the general effects of parameters such as compression ratio and external or buffer pressure on engine output. It also provides rational explanations of certain operational characteristics such as how engines generally behave when supercharged or pressurized. The results also identify optimum geometric configurations for engines operating in various regimes from isothermal to adiabatic and are extended to cover multi-workspace engines and heat pumps. Limited heat transfer due to finite-time effects have also been incorporated into the work.

  • ISBN : 1441976043
  • Pages : 744 pages

Download or read book The Dynamics of Heat written by Hans U. Fuchs and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-18 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on courses for students of science, engineering, and systems science at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences at Winterthur, this text approaches the fundamentals of thermodynamics from the point of view of continuum physics. By describing physical processes in terms of the flow and balance of physical quantities, the author achieves a unified approach to hydraulics, electricity, mechanics and thermodynamics. In this way, it becomes clear that entropy is the fundamental property that is transported in thermal processes (i.e., heat), and that temperature is the corresponding potential. The resulting theory of the creation, flow, and balance of entropy provides the foundation of a dynamical theory of heat. This extensively revised and updated second edition includes new material on dynamical chemical processes, thermoelectricity, and explicit dynamical modeling of thermal and chemical processes. To make the book more useful for courses on thermodynamics and physical chemistry at different levels, coverage of topics is divided into introductory and more advanced and formal treatments. Previous knowledge of thermodynamics is not required, but the reader should be familiar with basic electricity, mechanics, and chemistry and should have some knowledge of elementary calculus. The special feature of the first edition -- the integration of thermodynamics, heat transfer, and chemical processes -- has been maintained and strengthened. Key Features: · First revised edition of a successful text/reference in fourteen years · More than 25 percent new material · Provides a unified approach to thermodynamics and heat transport in fundamental physical and chemical processes · Includes worked examples, questions, and problem sets for use as a teaching text or to test the reader's understanding · Includes many system dynamics models of laboratory experiments

Book Hydrodynamic Fluctuations in Fluids and Fluid Mixtures

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Fluctuations in Fluids and Fluid Mixtures written by Jose M. Ortiz de Zarate and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2006-04-19 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with density, temperature, velocity and concentration fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures. The book first reviews thermal fluctuations in equilibrium fluids on the basis of fluctuating hydrodynamics. It then shows how the method of fluctuating hydrodynamics can be extended to deal with hydrodynamic fluctuations when the system is in a stationary nonequilibrium state. In contrast to equilibrium fluids where the fluctuations are generally short ranged unless the system is close to a critical point, fluctuations in nonequilibrium fluids are always long-ranged encompassing the entire system. The book provides the first comprehensive treatment of fluctuations in fluids and fluid mixtures brought out of equilibrium by the imposition of a temperature and concentration gradient but that are still in a macroscopically quiescent state. By incorporating appropriate boundary conditions in the case of fluid layers, it is shown how fluctuating hydrodynamics affects the fluctuations close to the onset of convection. Experimental techniques of light scattering and shadowgraphy for measuring nonequilibrium fluctuations are elucidated and the experimental results thus far reported in the literature are reviewed. · Systematic exposition of fluctuating hydrodynamics and its applications· First book on nonequilibrium fluctuations in fluids· Fluctuating Boussinesq equations and nonequilibrium fluids· Fluid layers and onset of convection· Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering in fluids· Shadowgraph technique for measuring fluctuations· Fluctuations near hydrodynamic instabilities
