Book There s Something In The Water

Download or read book There s Something In The Water written by Ingrid R. G. Waldron and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2018-07-04T00:00:00Z with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In “There’s Something In The Water”, Ingrid R. G. Waldron examines the legacy of environmental racism and its health impacts in Indigenous and Black communities in Canada, using Nova Scotia as a case study, and the grassroots resistance activities by Indigenous and Black communities against the pollution and poisoning of their communities. Using settler colonialism as the overarching theory, Waldron unpacks how environmental racism operates as a mechanism of erasure enabled by the intersecting dynamics of white supremacy, power, state-sanctioned racial violence, neoliberalism and racial capitalism in white settler societies. By and large, the environmental justice narrative in Nova Scotia fails to make race explicit, obscuring it within discussions on class, and this type of strategic inadvertence mutes the specificity of Mi’kmaq and African Nova Scotian experiences with racism and environmental hazards in Nova Scotia. By redefining the parameters of critique around the environmental justice narrative and movement in Nova Scotia and Canada, Waldron opens a space for a more critical dialogue on how environmental racism manifests itself within this intersectional context. Waldron also illustrates the ways in which the effects of environmental racism are compounded by other forms of oppression to further dehumanize and harm communities already dealing with pre-existing vulnerabilities, such as long-standing social and economic inequality. Finally, Waldron documents the long history of struggle, resistance, and mobilizing in Indigenous and Black communities to address environmental racism.

The Patels insist that Ashish date an Indian-American girl—under contract. Sweetie Nair is many things: a formidable track athlete who can outrun most people in California, a loyal friend, a shower-singing champion. Oh, and she’s also fat. To Sweetie’s traditional parents, this last detail is the kiss of death. Sweetie loves her parents, but she’s so tired of being told she’s lacking because she’s fat. She decides it’s time to kick off the Sassy Sweetie Project, where she’ll show the world (and herself) what she’s really made of. Ashish and Sweetie both have something to prove. Book A Figurative Commentary On the Song Of Solomon

Download or read book A Figurative Commentary On the Song Of Solomon written by David Gregson McNeely and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In American churches, the Song Of Solomon is traditionally thought of as an allegory of the love between Jesus, and the church. In Hebrew tradition, it is an allegory about the love of God for the Hebrew people, or "Jehovahas Wife" While both interpretations can be considered accurate, there is a third and mostly overlooked interpretation, and that is that it is a poetic representation of the earthly life, ministry, crucifixion, death burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, & His continued ministry to the church, through the Holy Spirit from Heaven. This commentary is an attempt to outline this third interpretation in clear, concise language for the edification of the church and the body of Jesus Christ.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Robert Irwin, perhaps the most influential of the California artists, moved from his beginnings in abstract expressionism through successive shifts in style and sensibility, into a new aesthetic territory altogether, one where philosophical concepts of perception and the world interact. Weschler has charted the journey with exceptional clarity and cogency. He has also, in the process, provided what seems to me the best running history of postwar West Coast art that I have yet seen."—Calvin Tomkins

Book excerpt: Mark Manning, once a prominent journalist at a major daily newspaper in Chicago, is now the owner and publisher of the Dumont Daily Register, the daily paper in a small Wisconsin city. Here the biggest news is the impending city council report on a proposed new adult bookstore zoning law, the upcoming election for Sheriff and the upcoming annual exhibition of the Midwest Miniatures Society. In a unique coup for the first-ever miniatures exhibition in Dumont, the "king of miniatures", Mr. Carroll Cantrell has agreed to come and judge the show's main event. But the exhibition itself is quickly shoved off the front page of the paper when Cantrell is found murdered in his room. To make matters worse, Doug Pierce, the local sheriff, is widely believed to be responsible. Pierce - a closeted gay man and friend of Mark Manning - had been carrying on an affair with Cantrell and was the last person seen leaving his room before the body was discovered. As conservative elements in Dumont attempt to exploit the murder - and the sheriff's association with the deceased - to their own ends, Manning, with the help of his lover, architect Neil Waite, his staff and friends, starts his own investigation of the murder. With Cantrell having led something of a double life with no end of potential enemies and the miniatures world itself being a hot bed of rivalries and closely held resentments, the truth begins to feel very elusive indeed. As public sentiment begins to swing and time running out for Sheriff Pierce, Mark must uncover some of this close-knit town's most deeply held secrets if he's to learn the truth in time.

Book What Not to Name Your Baby

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect antidote to the boring baby-naming books -- a hilarious guide for expecting parents on what NOT to name their baby! What better way to choose the perfect name than by ruling out those names that are off-limits? Joe Borgenicht offers more than a thousand names, complete with pronunciation and definitions, that absolutely, positively cannot be used for a child. But don't worry, there are exceptions to the rules, and a lot of names will work just fine, especially if there's something wrong with you. Sections of the book include: "Movie Mania" (Morhpeus, Maverick, and Starsky); "It's the 21st Century: Move On!" (Murray, Irving, and Ethel); and "Shop at the Mall, Not the Nursery" (Timberland, Lucky, and Armani). There are hilarious sidebars and lists, like: "Infamous Dictators" (Saddam, Benito, and Manuel); "Famous Sidekicks" (Robin, Tonto, and Garfunkel); and "First Voted Off the Island" Survivors (Sonja, Debb, and Peter); and more! We've all heard the bad ones: Moon Unit (Zappa), Sailor Lee (Brinkley), Chastity (Bono). With an edgy and often politically incorrect sense of humor, What Not to Name Your Baby is certain to help expecting parents be creative, without scarring their child for life -- at least not with a name.

Except nothing was resolved, only witnessed. In fact, before returning to their own time, Charlotte herself took part in the very events that would shape, in some small way, the flawed woman Gwendolyn grew up to be. Now the two friends are unexpectedly offered the opportunity to embark on a second trip – this one physical rather than temporal – accompanying Gwendolyn to London, England, where she will reconnect with Sarah, a former tutor and actress, who left Toronto with Gwendolyn’s older brother Charlie when he went overseas to join the RAF. There Gwendolyn will have the long-severed threads of her unhappy childhood within reach and be confronted with difficult truths about herself and the life she has lived. The question is whether she will recognize resolution for what it is and be able to stitch the torn aspects of her life back together again.

Benjamin Walker, a US one hundred dollar note, will take you where no other has, deep into the money chain of the cocaine trade. From the vaults of a bank to the streets of New York, Benjamin passes from hand to hand until he reaches the jungles of Colombia. From street dealers to money launderers, from guerrilla and paramilitary groups to drug cartel barons, Benjamin sees all the levels of this illegal trade. He narrates a story that describes enormous wealth, abject poverty, and witnesses the horror when innocent people are caught in the crossfire of the cocaine producers. He sees how the amounts of wealth generated by drugs permeate all levels of society in Colombia as well as in North America and elsewhere.
