Book General Momentum Theory for Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines

Download or read book General Momentum Theory for Horizontal Axis Wind Turbines written by Jens Nørkær Sørensen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconsiders the basic approaches behind the BEM method and in particular assesses and validates the equations forming the general momentum theory. One part of the book concerns the validation, using numerical fluid mechanics (CFD), of the different terms in the equations forming the momentum theory. Other parts present new ideas for extending the theory and for enhancing the accuracy of the BEM approach. Besides a general introduction and explanation of the momentum theory, the book also deals with specialized topics, such as diffusor-augmented rotors, wind tunnel corrections, tip corrections, and combined momentum/vortex theory for design of wind turbine rotors. The book contains new as well as already published material, and the author has strived to put the material into a new and more consistent context than what usually is found in similar text books. The book is primarily intended for researchers and experienced students with a basic knowledge in fluid mechanics wishing to understand and expand their knowledge on wind turbine aerodynamics. The book is self-consistent, hence all necessary derivations are shown, and it should not be necessary to seek help in other literature to understand the contents of the book.

Book Theory of the Winds Classic Reprint

Download or read book Theory of the Winds Classic Reprint written by Charles Wilkes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of the Winds The theory OF the winds has been so long considered as established, that it is with some hesitation I venture to question it; especially after it has been adopted by many very distinguished men of science. Yet, however presumptuous it may appear, I cannot persuade myself that the received theory is either satisfactory in whole or in part. It will be my endeavour, in this chapter, to exhibit the causes and effects, and to explain them more in accordance with the facts accumulated by observation. In order to place the subject more fully before the reader, I will briefly recite the versions of the present adopted Theory of the Winds. Download or read book The Theory of the Winds written by Charles Wilkes and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-07-25 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the INTRODUCTION. "The Theory Of The Winds," which is now for the first time published, has been prepared for several years, and is printed in the Hydrography, being the XVIIth volume of the Government Edition of the United States Exploring Expedition. Many delays incident to the publication of such an extensive work have taken place, both in the preparation, engraving, and printing, which have been beyond the control of those engaged in its superintendence. But, even the part that has been printed is, as it were, a sealed book--for there are only one hundred copies ordered by the Government for the use of the world! In order to remedy this omission, and having officially printed the Hydrography, I feel at liberty to give a part of that volume a wider circulation in the present work, containing the Theory of the Winds, with the addition of Sailing Directions, derived from my own observations, made on the passages of the Exploring Expedition from port to port, during its four years' absence. Annexed to the pamphlet is a Map of the World, showing the extent and direction of the surface winds, -- and on it are traced the most advantageous routes for vessels sailing, whether by the east or west. Among these, I would particularly call the attention of navigators to the new Equatorial route from the China Seas, through the Sooloo Sea, to the eastward, and towards the South Pacific, which will be found explained in the text. Subsequent investigations have served to assure me of the truth of this Theory, based, as it is, upon the laws of nature.

Book Neutron Stars and Pulsars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Werner Becker
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-02-11
  • ISBN : 354076965X
  • Pages : 702 pages

Download or read book Neutron Stars and Pulsars written by Werner Becker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-02-11 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron stars are the most compact astronomical objects in the universe which are accessible by direct observation. Studying neutron stars means studying physics in regimes unattainable in any terrestrial laboratory. Understanding their observed complex phenomena requires a wide range of scientific disciplines, including the nuclear and condensed matter physics of very dense matter in neutron star interiors, plasma physics and quantum electrodynamics of magnetospheres, and the relativistic magneto-hydrodynamics of electron-positron pulsar winds interacting with some ambient medium. Not to mention the test bed neutron stars provide for general relativity theories, and their importance as potential sources of gravitational waves. It is this variety of disciplines which, among others, makes neutron star research so fascinating, not only for those who have been working in the field for many years but also for students and young scientists. The aim of this book is to serve as a reference work which not only reviews the progress made since the early days of pulsar astronomy, but especially focuses on questions such as: "What have we learned about the subject and how did we learn it?", "What are the most important open questions in this area?" and "What new tools, telescopes, observations, and calculations are needed to answer these questions?". All authors who have contributed to this book have devoted a significant part of their scientific careers to exploring the nature of neutron stars and understanding pulsars. Everyone has paid special attention to writing educational comprehensive review articles with the needs of beginners, students and young scientists as potential readers in mind. This book will be a valuable source of information for these groups.

Book Understanding Wind Power Technology

Download or read book Understanding Wind Power Technology written by Alois Schaffarczyk and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-04-10 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind energy technology has progressed enormously over the last decade. In coming years it will continue to develop in terms of power ratings, performance and installed capacity of large wind turbines worldwide, with exciting developments in offshore installations. Designed to meet the training needs of wind engineers, this introductory text puts wind energy in context, from the natural resource to the assessment of cost effectiveness and bridges the gap between theory and practice. The thorough coverage spans the scientific basics, practical implementations and the modern state of technology used in onshore and offshore wind farms for electricity generation. Key features: provides in-depth treatment of all systems associated with wind energy, including the aerodynamic and structural aspects of blade design, the flow of energy and loads through the wind turbine, the electrical components and power electronics including control systems explains the importance of wind resource assessment techniques, site evaluation and ecology with a focus of project planning and operation describes the integration of wind farms into the electric grid and includes a whole chapter dedicated to offshore wind farms includes questions in each chapter for readers to test their knowledge Written by experts with deep experience in research, teaching and industry, this text conveys the importance of wind energy in the international energy-policy debate, and offers clear insight into the subject for postgraduates and final year undergraduate students studying all aspects of wind engineering. Understanding Wind Power Systems is also an authoritative resource for engineers designing and developing wind energy systems, energy policy makers, environmentalists, and economists in the renewable energy sector.
