Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluid mechanics is one of the greatest accomplishments of classical physics. The Navier-Stokes equations, first derived in the eighteenth century, serve as an accurate mathematical model with which to describe the flow of a broad class of real fluids. Not only is the subject of interest to mathematicians and physicists, but it is also indispensable to mechanical, aeronautical, and chemical engineers, who have to apply the equations to real-world examples, such as the flow of air around an aircraft wing or the motion of liquid droplets in a suspension. In this book, which first appeared in a comprehensive collection of essays entitled The Theory of Laminar Flows (Princeton, 1964), P. A. Lagerstrom imparts the essential theoretical framework of laminar flows to the reader. A concise and elegant description, Lagerstrom's work remains a model piece of writing and has much to offer today's reader seeking an introduction to the flow of nonturbulent fluids. Beginning with the conservation laws that result in the equation of continuity, the Navier-Stokes equation, and the energy transport equation, Lagerstrom moves on to consider viscous waves, low Reynolds-number approximations such as Stokes flow and the Oseen equations, and then high Reynolds-number approximations that are used to describe boundary layers, jets, and wakes. Finally, he examines some compressibility effects, such as those that occur in the laminar boundary layer around a flat plate, both with and without a pressure gradient.

Book Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes

Download or read book Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes written by Howard Brenner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 761 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes: Scaling Principles and Asymptotic Analysis presents analytic methods for the solution of fluid mechanics and convective transport processes, all in the laminar flow regime. This book brings together the results of almost 30 years of research on the use of nondimensionalization, scaling principles, and asymptotic analysis into a comprehensive form suitable for presentation in a core graduate-level course on fluid mechanics and the convective transport of heat. A considerable amount of material on viscous-dominated flows is covered. A unique feature of this book is its emphasis on scaling principles and the use of asymptotic methods, both as a means of solution and as a basis for qualitative understanding of the correlations that exist between independent and dependent dimensionless parameters in transport processes. Laminar Flow and Convective Transport Processes is suitable for use as a textbook for graduate courses in fluid mechanics and transport phenomena and also as a reference for researchers in the field.

Book Statistical Theory and Modeling for Turbulent Flows

Download or read book Statistical Theory and Modeling for Turbulent Flows written by P. A. Durbin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-06-28 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a comprehensive grounding in the subject of turbulence, Statistical Theory and Modeling for Turbulent Flows develops both the physical insight and the mathematical framework needed to understand turbulent flow. Its scope enables the reader to become a knowledgeable user of turbulence models; it develops analytical tools for developers of predictive tools. Thoroughly revised and updated, this second edition includes a new fourth section covering DNS (direct numerical simulation), LES (large eddy simulation), DES (detached eddy simulation) and numerical aspects of eddy resolving simulation. In addition to its role as a guide for students, Statistical Theory and Modeling for Turbulent Flows also is a valuable reference for practicing engineers and scientists in computational and experimental fluid dynamics, who would like to broaden their understanding of fundamental issues in turbulence and how they relate to turbulence model implementation. Provides an excellent foundation to the fundamental theoretical concepts in turbulence. Features new and heavily revised material, including an entire new section on eddy resolving simulation. Includes new material on modeling laminar to turbulent transition. Written for students and practitioners in aeronautical and mechanical engineering, applied mathematics and the physical sciences. Accompanied by a website housing solutions to the problems within the book.

Book Laminar Wakes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stanley A. Berger
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1971
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Laminar Wakes written by Stanley A. Berger and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive survey is given of the state of knowledge of steady, nonturbulent laminar fluid wakes behind both blunt and slender bodies in viscous fluids, with emphasis on high-speed wakes. The flows are generally assumed to occur at large but finite free-stream Reynolds numbers, generally with a thin boundary layer on the body. Compressible and viscous flow theory are involved. The focus is on basic theory and concepts; both experimental results and speculative theories are given only where they provide greater insight or information otherwise unavailable. Transition and turbulence problems are not discssed.
