Book Optical Phase Conjugation

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation written by Robert A. Fisher and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book appears at a time of intense activity in optical phase conjugation. We chose not to await the maturation of the field, but instead to provide this material in time to be useful in its development. We have tried very hard to elucidate and interrelate the various nonlinear phenomena which can be used for optical phase conjugation.

Book Principles of Phase Conjugation

Download or read book Principles of Phase Conjugation written by B.Y. Zel'Dovich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been prompted by our des ire to share with others our apprecia tion of the harmony and beauty in a particular sphere of modern optics known as "optical phase conjugation". Practical applications of the phase conjugated wave are likely to be far-reaching. Optical phase conjugation (OPC) combines in itself aesthetic and pragmatic attractiveness, a synthesis that has made OPC a subject of general attention. The figure presents the ap proximate rate of publications (number of articles per year) on OPC in the world literature for recent years, the lower curve denoting the work carried out in the USSR. The efforts of a large unofficial international collective have yielded an impressive result. 150 100 50 1975 1980 At present, the physical pro ces ses underlying various OPC methods are quite understandable, and it is the physics of OPC to which our book is devoted. Practical and scientific applications of phase-conjugated waves, which are of no less interest, have been touched upon in short, as major achievements in this sphere are a matter of the future. Today there are two main methods of OPC: i) by backward stimulated light scattering, ii) by four-wave mixing. Naturally, much attention is given to these methods in our book which, after the introductory Chap. 1, can be divided into two almost independent parts - Chaps. 2 - 5, and Chaps. 6 - 8.

Download or read book Phase In Optics written by Myron W Evans and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-10-05 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to the classical and quantum phases in wave and particle optics from the viewpoint of both theory and applications. Wave and beam light optics are reviewed in considerable detail, featuring optical imaging and holography in linear optics and phase conjugation methods in nonlinear optics. Photon optics is embodied here as quantum optics with the modes treated as quantum harmonic oscillators. The importance of the Wigner function for the phase space description in the context of canonical quantization is respected and the method of quasidistributions related to operator orderings in the second-quantized theory is exposed. The history of the quantum phase problem, characterized by renewed interest in the solution to the problem, is included and brought up to date. Approaches based on exponential phase operators, discrete phase states, the enlargement of the Hilbert space of the harmonic oscillator leading to the phase representations and distributions, together with solutions motivated by the quasidistributions, are introduced. The operational approach to the quantum phase is contrasted with the previous formalisms. The results of the study of the coherent states and the ordinary squeezed states from the viewpoint of the quantum phase and those of the analysis of the quantum statistics of phase-related special states of the light field are provided. The quantum phase is also treated with respect to quantum interferometry, particle interferometry, nonlinear optical processes, and quantum nondemolition measurements. The book will prove indispensable to research workers in general optics, quantum optics and electronics, optoelectronics, and nonlinear optics, as well as to students of physics, optics, optoelectronics, photonics, and optical engineering.

Book Optical Phase Conjugation with Photorefractive Sn2P2S6

Download or read book Optical Phase Conjugation with Photorefractive Sn2P2S6 written by Serguey Odoulov and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking Dynamic Holography Group, Institute of Physics. National Academy of Sciences as follows: The contractor will investigate getting the largest possible phase conjugate reflectivity in Sn2P2S6 by optimizing the usual parameters (such as pump intensity ratio, signal to pump intensity ratio, angle of incidence for pump and probe waves, polarization of interacting waves, orientation of waves with respect to sample principle axes) and frequency shift, a new parameter of special importance of Sn2P2S6. To achieve this the contractor shall perform the following: (1) The backward wave from four wave mixing will be used to generate the phase conjugate waves. Optimum conditions will be found to accomplish this. (2) Study different self-phase conjugate mirrors based on various coherent optical oscillators Optimize the performance of a double phase conjugating mirror. The study shows that SPS crystal can be efficiently used for conjugation of coherent light beams both in traditional backward-wave four-wave mixing geometry and in self-pumped coherent oscillator geometries. The samples belonging to Type I are suitable for conjugation both in the red (He-Ne laser light) and in near infrared (Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns) while samples of Type II can be used for red and shorter infrared (0.8 ... 0.9 microns) region of spectrum. The phase conjugate intensity twice as large as the signal intensity was easily achieved in the red, at lambda = 0.63 microns. It is inevitable that with the same sample and the same refractive index modulation the phase conjugate reflectivity in infrared diminishes as lambda per 2 with the increasing lambda. This decrease can be compensated for by increasing the thickness of the samples used, what is essentially technological and not physical problem. With the available samples we got 17% phase conjugate reflectivity for Nd(3+):YAG, 1.06 microns radiation.

Download or read book Phase Conjugate Optics written by G. J. Dunning and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this program has been the study, both theoretically and experimentally, of the use of phase conjugate optics for information processing and image transmission applications. A significant portion of effort was directed toward an improved understanding of the photorefractive effort and its application to two-wave and four-wave mixing. The authors developed a model for grating formation in photorefractive materials and have derived expressions for figures of merit, which aid in selection of materials and the optimization of efficiency and speed. They also developed a model for two-wave mixing in the transient regime, and measured response times for both tow-wave and four-wave mixing. Other devices and materials considered for ODP applications include the Hughes liquid crystal light valve and long-chain organic molecules. Measurements on several ODP configurations were performed. First, they used optical phase conjugation to transmit an image through a 1.75 m multimode fiber, with a resolution of better than 15 lines/mm. Secondly, they demonstrated several static convolution and correlation operations, using character masks. Finally, they investigated the use of phase conjugation for real-time optical correlation. Results of each of these experiments are described. (Author).

Book Nonlinear Optical Principles and the Photorefractive Effect Applied to Optical Phase Conjugation

Download or read book Nonlinear Optical Principles and the Photorefractive Effect Applied to Optical Phase Conjugation written by Michael A. Marciniak and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a detailed interpretation of published theory of nonlinear optical phase conjugation by degenerate four wave mixing and by the photorefractive effect. Photorefractive phase conjugation is shown to be a low incident intensity alternative to degenerate four wave mixing (which requires high intensity incident light to achieve the nonlinear polarization of a medium. The derivations of two models for the photorefractive effect, Feinberg's Hopping Model and Kukhtarev's Solid State Model, are presented. The significance of Kukhtarev's model is his development of criteria for which spatially sinusoidal incident light (interference fringes) produces a spatially sinusoidal electro-static field in the crystal-an assumption casually made in much photorefractive work. Both models culminate in expressions for the magnitude of the space-charge field and the spatial phase shift between the field and the incident interference pattern for small modulation conditions. Feinberg's model is extended to develop expressions for two-beam coupling, diffraction efficiency and phase conjugate reflectivity. An alternative development for these expressions assumes the electro-static field exists in the crystal and modulates the crystal's refractive index by the linear electro-optic (Pockel's) effect.

Book Physics of Nonlinear Optics

Download or read book Physics of Nonlinear Optics written by Y. V. G. S. Murti and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-20 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is designed to serve as a textbook for courses offered to upper-undergraduate students enrolled in physics. The first edition of this book was published in 2014. As there is a demand for the next edition, it is quite natural to take note of the several advances that have occurred in the subject over the past five years and to decide which of these are appropriate for inclusion at the textbook level, given the fundamental nature and the significance of the subject area. This is the prime motivation for bringing out a revised second edition. Among the newer mechanisms and materials, the book introduces the super-continuum generation, which arises from an excellent interplay of the various mechanisms of optical nonlinearity. The topics covered in this book are quantum mechanics of nonlinear interaction of matter and radiation, formalism and phenomenology of nonlinear wave mixing processes, optical phase conjugation and applications, self-focusing and self-phase modulation and their role in pulse modification, nonlinear absorption mechanisms, and optical limiting applications, photonic switching and bi-stability, and physical mechanisms leading to a nonlinear response in a variety of materials. This book has emerged from an attempt to address the requirement of presenting the subject at the college level. This textbook includes rigorous features such as the elucidation of relevant basic principles of physics; a clear exposition of the ideas involved at an appropriate level; coverage of the physical mechanisms of non-linearity; updates on physical mechanisms and emerging photonic materials and emphasis on the experimental study of nonlinear interactions. The detailed coverage and pedagogical tools make this an ideal textbook for students and researchers enrolled in physics and related courses.
