Book Theoretical and Numerical Study of Anomalous Turbulent Transport in Plasmas

Download or read book Theoretical and Numerical Study of Anomalous Turbulent Transport in Plasmas written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical and computational analysis of particle transport in a plasma turbulence was carried out. Particle behavior was investigated by test particle simulations in different types of plasma turbulence, including drift wave turbulence, ion acoustic turbulence and Langmuir turbulence. Resonance broadening in real space around mode rational surface was confirmed in drift wave turbulence. Nonresonant interaction of waves and particles were studied in ion acoustic turbulence. Resonance broadening in velocity space was found as a result of non-Markovian process in Langmuir turbulence. A semiclassical quantum plasma approach was also applied to plasma turbulence. Some instabilities in toroidal geometry were studied as eigen value problems.

Book Aspects of Anomalous Transport in Plasmas

Download or read book Aspects of Anomalous Transport in Plasmas written by Radu Balescu and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anomalous transport is a ubiquitous phenomenon in astrophysical, geophysical and laboratory plasmas; and is a key topic in controlled nuclear fusion research. Despite its fundamental importance and ongoing research interest, a full understanding of anomalous transport in plasmas is still incomplete, due to the complexity of the nonlinear phenomena involved. Aspects in Anomalous Transport in Plasmas is the first book to systematically consider anomalous plasma transport theory and provides a unification of the many theoretical models by emphasizing interrelations between seemingly different methodologies. It is not intended as a catalogue of the vast number of plasma instabilities leading to anomalous transport; instead it chooses a number of these and emphasizes the aspects specifically due to turbulence. After a brief introduction, the microscopic theory of turbulence is discussed, including quasilinear theory and various aspects of renormalization methods, which leads to an understanding of resonance broadening, mode coupling, trajectory correlation and clumps. The second half of the book is devoted to stochiastic tramsport, using methods based on the Langevin equations and on Random Walk theory. This treatment aims at going beyond the traditional limits of weak turbulence, by introducing the recently developed method of decorrelation trajectories, and its application to electrostatic turbulence, magnetic turbulence and zonal flow generation. The final chapter includes very recent work on the nonlocal transport phenomenon.

Book Numerical Simulation of Collisionless Kinetic Plasma Turbulence

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Collisionless Kinetic Plasma Turbulence written by Daniel W. Crews and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hot plasma dissipates energy on scales comparable to the modes of collective oscillation through a turbulent cascade of the distribution function in its phase space. This phase space turbulence is responsible for augmenting fluid transport coefficients beyond predictions from collisional theories, a phenomenon termed anomalous transport. This work studies collisionless kinetic phase space turbulence using spectral and high-order discontinuous Galerkin numerical methods to produce highly resolved simulations of the kinetic equation. Based on these simulations intuition is built for the physics of anomalously enhanced transport, critical studies are performed on reduced models such as quasilinear theory, and mechanisms are identified by which macroscopic plasma properties are altered by microscopic turbulence. Novel results on discontinuous Galerkin method can be found within, such as a new way of thinking about the discrete differential operators of finite element methods as partial sums of orthogonal polynomial completeness theorems. Phase space eigenfunctions are studied in detail for both the electrostatic and electromagnetic pictures in the unmagnetized and strongly magnetized regimes, and utilized in a novel way to produce the initial conditions of continuum kinetic simulations. The nonlinear phase space structures of electron cyclotron instabilities are studied for loss-cone distributions. In addition, highly resolved simulations are presented for Langmuir and Weibel turbulence in two-dimensional configuration space.
