Book excerpt: Electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves are generated by a fundamental plasma instability and interact with multiple particle populations in the Earth's magnetosphere. This dissertation describes the application of spacecraft data and linear theory of electromagnetic waves to investigating the evolution of EMIC wave properties in the presence of multiple magnetospheric ion species. In particular, the role of the low-energy heavy ion species on the wave properties is explored. A case study describes spacecraft measurements of EMIC wave activity, the multiple ion species (hot protons, cold protons, and cold He) present during the wave activity, and the methods for performing thorough characterization and analysis of the wave observations. I show that the observed wave characteristics are not typical of such waves as established from linear cold plasma theory. By using the full range of the observations and applying them to modeling of linear wave growth, I then show that wave properties evolve in the presence of sufficient free energy (low density hot protons), high density cold protons, and warm He (~10 eV). Parametric study of linear wave growth using the observed multiple ion properties as a reference point implies that EMIC waves evolve due to these warm plasma effects of the heavier ion species, and may also evolve due to non-local generation and propagation. This motivates a global multi-spacecraft magnetospheric study of the dominant cold/warm ions (H, He+, and O+) to establish their typical properties (composition, densities, and temperatures) at different magnetospheric locations and to determine where such cold/warm ions can lead to similar evolution of warm plasma EMIC waves assuming the hot proton free energy is available. I then apply these results to successfully explain typical growth rates and properties of EMIC waves observed in each MLT sector. The results show how our findings on cold/warm ion properties can be used in future studies of EMIC wave generation and properties, including the effect of the waves on scattering of relativistic radiation belt electrons, cold ion heating, and hot ion precipitation to the ionosphere resulting in the proton aurora.

Book excerpt: Hiss, chorus and electromagnetic ion cyclotron waves (EMIC wave) are three major wave modes that are widely investigated and included in the radiation belt electron models to explain electron precipitation. The quasi-linear theories of electron loss through pitch angle diffusion by hiss and EMIC waves were proposed in 1970s. Since then the testing of the theories is still going on though some progresses had been made. Comparison of theoretical predictions to electrons distribution at loss cone is one effective way to evaluate the theories. The main obstruction of loss cone testing was from the lack of measurements of the electron loss cone distribution with enough pitch angle and energy resolution and simultaneous wave activities at the heart of radiation belt. This thesis is devoted to testing the hiss and EMIC waves diffusion theories from the perspective of the electron loss cone distribution by utilizing the previously unnoticed overlap of UARS and CRRES missions in 1991. The conclusions are as following: (1) Two cases showing the consistency between quasi-linear theory of hiss diffusion and observed loss cone distribution are found. (2) In 25 out of 38 cases, hiss wave power is far insufficient in precipitating the large amount of electrons observed. Loss mechanisms other than hiss, chorus and EMIC waves are needed to account for the discrepancy. (3) Three EMIC wave events were investigated. In the first case, the isotropic distribution (sign of strong diffusion) is caused by process other than EMIC wave diffusion demonstrating that simultaneous presence of EMIC wave and electron precipitation does not guarantee any connection between the two. Large discrepancy between quasi-linear theory of EMIC wave diffusion and observed electron loss cone distribution is found from the second case. The strong depletion of electrons by EMIC waves predicted by the current theory was not found. In the third case the resonant energy goes beyond the instrument limit of electron detectors thus no conclusion is drawn.

The results are in agreement with the nonlocal theory of Bakshi, Ganguli, and Palmadesso. Since their discovery over two decades ago, ion-cyclotron waves have been an area of active research in the laboratory, in the ionosphere-magnetosphere, and in the solar corona. The current-driven ion-cyclotron wave instability received its first theoretical treatment in the (local) theory of Drummond and Rosenbluth, appropriate to a uniform, magnetized plasma, without magnetic shear, in which electrons drift along B field lines with the same drift velocity v(D), at all points in the plasma. Their treatment, however, could not allow, among other things, for the effect that the finite width of the current channel of most laboratory experiments has on the excitation of the instability. This has been considered in the nonlocal theories.
