All have been carefully revised, and some re-cast and partly re-written. With regard to the first volume, on theological subjects, it may be well to add that the essay last in order was almost the first written, and that though it expresses a view which I still earnestly hold, I do not think it does full justice to the theology of Mr. Maurice, to whom indeed, but for a certain feeling that dedications have become a somewhat unreal mode of acknowledging mental obligations, I should have wished to dedicate these Essays. To him more than to any other living man, I certainly owe my belief that theology is a true science, that a knowledge of God in a true scientific sense, however imperfect in degree, is open to us. But for what I venture to think the great living principle of Mr. Maurice's writings, the first volume of these Essays, and a considerable portion of the second, could scarcely have been written. That principle I take to be that all beliefs about God are but inadequate intellectual attempts to justify a belief in Him which is never a merely intellectual affirmation, but rather a living act of the spirit by no means confined to those who consciously confess His presence. Many of the occasions on which they have been delivered may be fairly called historical; some of the essays are more properly theological; the first of these volumes represents in general the former, while the second represents the latter class of material. Yet they one and all express the convictions with regard to fundamental truth which have been growing and deepening in my mind during my long period of service as an instructor of students for the ministry. The one system of doctrine, which I regard as not only scriptural, but rational, gives unity and color to both volumes, and the variety of circumstances under which the several papers have been produced has permitted repetition of ideas and illustrations which would have, been avoided in a more elaborate treatise. I am inclined to think that our Lord uttered more-than once the same maxims and parables, and I would hide behind his example. At any rate, I commend these hitherto scattered productions to his keeping, and would add to them the motto of our seminary, "Christo Deo Salvatori." I shall not, however, enter into the consideration of the general fabric of the Christian Evidences, which is well known to you from the works of many able writers who have devoted themselves to that subject. I shall be doing perhaps something more useful if I call attention to some particular danger connected with the subject of evidence at this day, and endeavour to throw some light on the way in which it is to be met. Apart from, and quite independently of, the particular arguments which unbelievers may use, it is to be observed that the mere existence of a large body of unbelief around us is itself a danger and a disturbance to us. It impresses the imagination. Such mere quantity of unbelief seems to be an argument in itself against revelation. We are perpetually reminded of it in the books of the day, in newspapers and reviews. It does not allow itself to be passed over; it obtrudes itself upon us at every turn; we cannot help observing it. All this affects the imagination.
