Book The Lexico Grammatical Categories of Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis

Download or read book The Lexico Grammatical Categories of Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis written by Anwar El-Issa and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-06-24 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is based on systemic-functional grammar (SFG) and focuses on the concept of Theme (the element which occupies the initial position in the clause in English), which plays a special role in the textual organization of the message contained in the clause. Theme represents one of the ways by which writers construct meaningful communicative language or stretches of discourse. It signals the relationship between the thought in the speakers mind and its expression in the discourse. Therefore, it contributes to the method of development of the texts proper. The reason for choosing Theme as a tool of analysis stems from the fact that it is a fruitful approach to the understanding of texts as is shown by the fact that it has been the concern of a number of major studies. I will adopt both a qualitative and a quantitative analysis. The results of this analysis will be presented and tabulated in such a way as to underline the distinguishing features of the genre. The tools of functional grammar (Theme and Transitivity) will be applied to the data being collected. A significant, positive facet pertinent to this study lies in its pedagogical implications. The study of the structure of Theme has resulted in useful applications, and the findings drawn from the data collected will, it is hoped, have wider application; they are not meant to be merely suggestive. The findings in this book show how Theme-Rheme can have significant pedagogical values and impacts on the native and non-native learners. The learner not only has to construct his/her sentences, choosing appropriate lexis, but he/she has to make those sentences cohere into a text belonging to the genre being tackled. The findings in this book also suggest that control of the Theme-Rheme system is part of what the successful writer (native or non-native) uses to achieve such coherence. In this regard, students can be aware of a variety of linguistics choices to help them write more effectively and coherently.

Book Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis

Download or read book Theme as an Index of Genre in Discourse Analysis written by Anwar El-Issa and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this book is on Theme-Rheme analysis. In English the Theme is realized as the initial constituent of the clause or sentence. The information that is contained within the themes of the various sentences of a passage correlates with the method of development of the passage. The meaning of Theme and its realization in English explains the general correlation of given information with the initial position in the sentence. The findings and analysis of Theme-Rheme in this book will immensely aid both researchers and students who seek to understand and unfold language structures and analyze written discourse. It also provides teachers with efficient tools to analyze their students academic writing and find ways to leverage it. This book also sheds lights on the semantic and structure of the language based on the four analytical approaches implemented in this study. The findings in this book suggest that control of the Theme-Rheme system is part of what the successful writer (native or non-native) uses to achieve such coherence. In this regard, students can be aware of a variety of linguistics choices to help them write more effectively. This book suggests that control of the Theme-Rheme system in academic writing is part of what the successful writer uses to achieve coherence. This book offers a new perspective on the way written discourse is organized and structured that is of some relevance to language teachers and applied linguists, as well as to theoretical and descriptive linguists. I have tried to offer in this book new insights into analyzing texts and investigating the thematic organization of the grammatical properties of Theme at clause level, and that, I hope, will be found sufficient reason for reading it.

Book Worlds of Written Discourse

Download or read book Worlds of Written Discourse written by Vijay Bhatia and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genre theory in the past few years has contributed immensely to our understanding of the way discourse is used in academic, professional and institutional contexts. However, its development has been constrained by the nature and design of its applications, which have invariably focused on language teaching and learning, or communication training and consultation. This has led to the use of simplified and idealised genres. In contrast to this, the real world of discourse is complex, dynamic and unpredictable. This tension between the real world of written discourse and its representation in applied genre-based literature is the main theme of this book. The book addresses this theme from the perspectives of four rather different worlds: the world of reality, the world of private intentions, the world of analysis and the world of applications. Using examples from a range of situations including advertising, business, academia, economics, law, book introductions, reports, media and fundraising, Bhatia uses discourse analysis to move genre theory away from educational contexts and into the real world. Book Analysing Professional Genres

Download or read book Analysing Professional Genres written by Anna Trosborg and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of genres in communication (written and spoken) is essential to professional success. This volume studies situationally appropriate responses in professional communication in face-to-face interaction and distance communication, from a socio-cognitive point of view. A traditional rhetorical approach does not give much insight in the ways in which genres are embedded in communicative activity or how actors draw upon genre knowledge to perform effectively. However, if genres are considered as embedded in social interaction “as typified forms of typified circumstances”, the rich dynamic aspects of genre knowledge can be disclosed. The chapters deal with genre knowledge in various settings, illustrating the impact of time, place, medium, skills and purpose, and some chapters deal with genre analysis in a broader sense giving ideas for applied genre analysis. The book is of interest to professionals and scholars in communication studies, discourse analysis, and social and cognitive science.

Book Multidisciplinary Views on Discourse Genre

Download or read book Multidisciplinary Views on Discourse Genre written by Ninke Stukker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection sets out an innovative research agenda for advancing a multidisciplinary approach to genre, bringing together researchers from a variety of disciplines to enhance our existing understanding of the challenges and opportunities for current and future genre research. The volume brings together perspectives from across disciplinary borders, including such fields as discourse studies, cognitive studies, computational discourse analysis, and education, to advance genre research into new directions, as it has historically been studied from a mono-disciplinary perspective. The book highlights how fruitful a multidisciplinary approach can be in accounting for the dynamic complexity of the discourse genres that underpin daily life, exploring six broad themes: defining genre; stability and variation; genre and cognition; computational methods; language and literacy development; and genre education. Taken together, the volume makes the case for the value of such an approach in better accounting for the conceptual and empirical complexities of genre and, in turn, serving as a springboard for innovations in genre research. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in linguistics, discourse studies, discourse psychology, media studies, language and literacy development, and education.

Book Professional Genres from an Interpersonal Perspective

Download or read book Professional Genres from an Interpersonal Perspective written by Christopher Hopkinson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together contributions focused on, and shaped by, two areas of linguistic research: genre analysis and the interpersonal component of language and discourse. It explores the interplay and interaction of genre and the interpersonal component, revealing potential connections and interdependencies between genre conventions and the realisation of interpersonal meanings, viewed from the perspective of the systemic functional approach to language and discourse analysis. The contributions focus on a variety of aspects of the interpersonal in selected genres of professional discourse, including not only communication among professionals, but also genres produced by professionals to address non-specialists. The volume consists of nine chapters grouped into three sections, guiding readers through four major discourse domains, namely media discourse, academic discourse, institutional discourse, and promotional discourse. Institutional and promotional discourses are combined in a single section, reflecting the hybridism of the majority of the genres under investigation here: genres of institutional discourse typically exhibit features akin to advertising, not only presenting the institutions in terms of the scope of their activities and services, but also serving a clear promotional purpose. The studies document how omnipresent, varied and plentiful the strategies of intersubjective positioning are, and how significant their position in genres and discourses invariably is. The social and cultural grounding of genres requires them to be conventional, yet it also ensures their flexibility, continuous development and change—qualities which make genres a permanent challenge and inspiration for research and discussion.
