Book The Routledge Companion to Photography Representation and Social Justice

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Photography Representation and Social Justice written by Moritz Neumüller and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Including work by leading scholars, artists, scientists and practitioners in the field of visual culture, The Routledge Companion to Photography, Representation and Social Justice is a seminal reference source for the new roles and contexts of photography in the twenty-first century. Bringing together a diverse set of contributions from across the globe, the volume explores current debates surrounding post-colonial thinking, empowerment, identity, contemporary modes of self-representation, diversity in the arts, the automated creation and use of imagery in science and industry, vernacular imagery and social media platforms and visual mechanisms for control and manipulation in the age of surveillance capitalism and deep fakes, as well as the role of imagery in times of crisis, such as pandemics, wars and climate change. The analysis of these complex themes will be anchored in existing theoretical frameworks but also include new ways of thinking about social justice and representation and how to cope with our daily image tsunami. Individual chapters bring together a diverse set of contributions, featuring essays, interviews, conversations and case studies by artists, scientists, curators, scholars, medical doctors, astrophysicists and social activists, who all share a strong interest in how lens-based media have shaped our world in recent years. Expanding on contemporary debates within the field, the Companion is essential reading for photographers, scholars and students alike.

Book Dandyism and Transcultural Modernity

Download or read book Dandyism and Transcultural Modernity written by Hsiao-yen Peng and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book views the Neo-Sensation mode of writing as a traveling genre, or style, that originated in France, moved on to Japan, and then to China. The author contends that modernity is possible only on "the transcultural site"—transcultural in the sense of breaking the divide between past and present, elite and popular, national and regional, male and female, literary and non-literary, inside and outside. To illustrate the concept of transcultural modernity, three icons are highlighted on the transcultural site: the dandy, the flaneur, and the translator. Mere flaneurs and flaneurses simply float with the tide of heterogeneous information on the transcultural site, whereas the dandy/flaneur and the cultural translator, propellers of modernity, manage to bring about transformative creation. Their performance marks the essence of transcultural modernity: the self-consciousness of working on the threshold, always testing the limits of boundaries and tempted to go beyond them. To develop the concept of dandyism—the quintessence of transcultural modernity—the Neo-Sensation gender triad formed by the dandy, the modern girl, and the modern boy is laid out. Writers discussed include Liu Na’ou, a Shanghai dandy par excellence from Taiwan, Paul Morand, who looked upon Coco Chanel the female dandy as his perfect other self, and Yokomitsu Riichi, who developed the theory of Neo-Sensation from Kant’s the-thing-in-itself.

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to F Scott Fitzgerald written by Ruth Prigozy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publisher Description (unedited publisher data) Eleven specially-commissioned essays by major Fitzgerald scholars present a clearly written and comprehensive assessment of F. Scott Fitzgerald as a writer and as a public and private figure. No aspect of his career is overlooked, from his first novel published in 1920, through his more than 170 short stories, to his last unfinished Hollywood novel. Contributions present the reader with a full and accessible picture of the background of American social and cultural change in the early decades of the twentieth century. The introduction traces Fitzgerald's career as a literary and public figure, and examines the extent to which public recognition has affected his reputation among scholars, critics, and general readers over the past sixty years. This is the only volume that offers undergraduates, graduates and general readers a full account of Fitzgerald's work as well as suggestions for further exploration of his work. Library of Congress subject headings for this publication: Fitzgerald, F, Scott (Francis Scott), 1896-1940 Criticism and interpretation Handbooks, manuals, etc.
