Book The Snows of Yesteryear

Download or read book The Snows of Yesteryear written by Gregor Von Rezzori and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gregor von Rezzori was born in Czernowitz, a onetime provincial capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that was later to be absorbed successively into Romania, the USSR, and the Ukraine—a town that was everywhere and nowhere, with a population of astonishing diversity. Growing up after World War I and the collapse of the empire, Rezzori lived in a twilit world suspended between the formalities of the old nineteenth-century order which had shaped his aristocratic parents and the innovations, uncertainties, and raw terror of the new century. The haunted atmosphere of this dying world is beautifully rendered in the pages of The Snows of Yesteryear. The book is a series of portraits—amused, fond, sometimes appalling—of Rezzori’s family: his hysterical and histrionic mother, disappointed by marriage, destructively obsessed with her children’s health and breeding; his father, a flinty reactionary, whose only real love was hunting; his haughty older sister, fated to die before thirty; his earthy nursemaid, who introduced Rezzori to the power of storytelling and the inevitability of death; and a beloved governess, Bunchy. Telling their stories, Rezzori tells his own, holding his early life to the light like a crystal until it shines for us with a prismatic brilliance.

Book The Hearts of Yesteryear

Download or read book The Hearts of Yesteryear written by Vivien Dean and published by JMS Books LLC. This book was released on 2016-08-06 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his career, actor John Paravati has stuck with what he told the gossip rags -- he's been in like, in lust, even in respect once or twice, but never love. All he's ever cared about is performing. If he's stuck now doing commercials for cruise lines, at least it's better than shilling adult diapers. But Hollywood pretends, and John is a master. Because once upon a time, he loved two things more than anything -- his best friend Frank and the movie palace he used as sanctuary. Over fifty years ago, John ran away from his hometown. Now, someone has restored the theater he left behind, and they want John at its relaunch. The memories still sting, but he agrees to attend, even though it means dealing with heartache. At seventy-seven, he's too old to hold onto the hurt. The question is, however, is he too old to start over once it's gone?

Download or read book A Bar on Adly Street written by Medhat M Ghabrial and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-08-05 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's 1971. Egypt is still reeling from the sudden death of its “benevolent” tyrant Nasser and teeters on the precipice of Sadat’s era of unrelenting Islamization. Ghabrial is an engineering graduate student and a TA, moonlighting in an office that operates more as a Marxist political and cultural salon, conveniently located between a famous cabaret and the Cairo Opera House. A frustrated dreamer of bygone eras when poetry and freedoms were sacred, he sees the alarming changes happening in front of his eyes altering his reality for good. Running parallel to the story of a nation in metamorphosis and turmoil is Ghabrial’s troubled love story with Aida, his life-thirsty19 year old student. Their relationship is complicated by many factors controlling that junction of history. Aida says: “Who can remember us 50 years from now, and who can tell what happened to us?” The real heroine of the narrative is Cairo of the early seventies with its night lights and escapes, alleys and bars, especially one underground bar, where the misfits of the city find refuge and salvation against a tremulous backdrop of a national unrest above ground. A Bar on Adly Street is an unflinching first-hand account of an in-between generation in 1970s Egypt whose fathers cherished secular democracy and religious tolerance, while they faced poverty, tyranny, fanaticism and corruption. It carefully layers strata of a life that examines the circumstances that lead to a nation turning against its defenseless minorities. Remnants of Greeks, and Italians, then Copts and even Muslims not subscribing to the MB’s Islamist agenda, all reeling under the new norms and the changing world around them, leaving them with no choice but to run away from home in droves, creating the schism in which the present narrative is at its centre.

Book Ahead of Her Time in Yesteryear

Download or read book Ahead of Her Time in Yesteryear written by Kibibi V. Mack-Shelton and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into a relatively privileged family, Geraldyne Pierce Zimmerman earned a reputation as a maverick in her lifelong home of Orangeburg, South Carolina, a semirural community where race and class were very much governed by the Jim Crow laws. Educated at Nashville’s Fisk University, Zimmerman returned to Orangeburg to teach school, serve her community, and champion equal rights for African Americans and women. Kibibi V. Mack-Shelton offers a vivid portrayal of the kind of black family seldom recognized for its role in the development of the African American community after the Civil War. At a time when “separate but equal” usually meant suffering and injustice for the black community, South Carolina families such as the Tatnalls, Pierces, and Zimmermans achieved a level of financial and social success rivaling that of many white families. Drawing heavily on the oral accounts of Geraldyne Pierce Zimmerman, Mack-Shelton draws the reader into the lives of the African American elite of the early twentieth century. Her captivating narrative style brings to life many complicated topics: how skin color affected interracial interactions and class distinctions within the black community itself, the role of education for women and for African Americans in general, and the ways in which cultural ideas about family and community are simultaneously preserved and transformed over the span of generations. Refreshing and engaging, Ahead of Her Time in Yesteryear is a fascinating biography for any reader interested in a new perspective on small-town black culture in the Jim Crow South.

In the tradition of such personal memoirs as "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "I Remember Mama" this delightful tale will evoke memories in the old and wonder in the young.

This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many members of the Hall family, a giant naseberry tree near their home in Jamaica served as a dear friend and confidant. It was a place of comfort and discussion, where children learned to mimic adults in speech and lifestyle. In Book Three Products from Under the Old Naseberry Tree, author Hortense M. Jenkins builds recollections of her family’s history, development, and faith around the memory of the naseberry tree. She explores undying love in the midst of strain, disappointment, and the rough edges of life, examining the ups and downs that many of the family encountered along the way. Although the family had few luxuries, they were happy. The family’s children never lost hope; God never gave up on them, and they never left His presence. And as a result of the foundation laid early in their lives, the Hall children excelled in most of their undertakings. Enhanced with scripture references throughout, this personal narrative shares the history of a family and explores the lessons that their growth and faith can teach others.

The poems are mostly interspersed with my realizations and feelings though certain concepts expressed by my near and dear ones may find a place here and there. My mind has often wandered from one theme to another; the most recurrent being the sweet and sour tribulations of ‘love’, its confessions and the turmoil of this ‘world at large’. The ‘songs of yesteryears’ and ‘remembrances’ are also associated with the passage of time; years of growing up and losses suffered.
