Book International Handbook of Behavior Modification and Therapy

Download or read book International Handbook of Behavior Modification and Therapy written by Alan S. Bellack and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1025 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid growth of behavior therapy over the past 20 years has been well doc umented. Yet the geometric expansion of the field has been so great that it deserves to be recounted. We all received our graduate training in the mid to late 1960s. Courses in behavior therapy were then a rarity. Behavioral training was based more on informal tutorials than on systematic programs of study. The behavioral literature was so circumscribed that it could be easily mastered in a few months of study. A mere half-dozen books (by Wolpe, Lazarus, Eysenck, Ullmann, and Krasner) more-or-Iess comprised the behavioral library in the mid- 1960s. Semirial works by Ayllon and Azrin, Bandura, Franks, and Kanfer in 1968 and 1969 made it only slightly more difficult to survey the field. Keeping abreast of new developments was not very difficult, as Behaviour Research and Therapy and the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis were the only regular outlets for behavioral articles until the end of the decade, when Behavior Therapy and Be havior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry first appeared. We are too young to be maudlin, but "Oh for the good old days!" One of us did a quick survey of his bookshelves and stopped counting books with behavior or behavioral in the titles when he reached 100. There were at least half again as many behavioral books without those words in the title.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time, not long ago, when the only treatment options considered to be worthwhile for patients requiring psychiatric care were the 50-minute hour on the one hand, or full-time hospitalization on the other. Most of us were convinced in those days that treatment could, and indeed should, take place with a minimum of involvement by the patient's family. Nor did we really consider that the community in which a patient lived was a significant contributor to either his illness or its cure. These naive assumptions were strongly challenged, of course, be ginning with the questions of social psychiatrists in the 50s and con tinuing with the quiet growth of the patients' rights movement. Thus it is no mere coincidence that when the community psychiatry movement emerged in the mid-60s as a powerful force for profound change in our traditional practice, the concept of partial hospitalization, which can be traced back at least 30 years, became a symbol of the new social psychiatry. Partial hospitalization had singular advantages well attuned to the times: it did not force a separation between the patient and his family; it cost far less to deliver than inpatient care; and it avoided the stigma of institutionalization while still providing far more care than the traditional psychotherapeutic hour. In a few years' time, several well controlled studies documented that virtually all patients who were cus tomarily treated on an inpatient basis could be effectively managed and treated in a day hospital.

Book Behavioral Approaches to Medicine

Download or read book Behavioral Approaches to Medicine written by John R. McNamara and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BEHAVIORAL MEDICINE: AN IDEA . . . As one of the first volumes on behavioral medicine, the authors and editor of this text bear special responsibility for placing the development of this new field in an historical and conceptual perspective with regard to the myriad events currently tak ing place in biobehavioral approaches to physical health and illness. Recognizing that the basic concepts embodied in behavioral medicine are at least several thousand years old begs the question of how behavioral medicine offers not only a new perspective but a potentially more productive approach to many of the age-old problems concerning the maintenance of health and the prevention, diag nosis, and treatment of, and rehabilitation from, illness. One must look not only at the historical antecedents of the field but also at the contemporaneous events occur ring in related areas on the social and political as well as the biomedical and behavioral levels to fully comprehend the significance of this movement, which has designated itself "behavioral medicine. " l", C. 'c. V! The past 40 years have seen the emergence, development, and gradual decli~eJof behavioral medicine's most immediate predecessor, psychosomatic medicine. Recent articles by Engel (1977), Lipowski (1977), Weiner (1977), and Leigh and Reiser (1977), attest to the frustration and concern of leading theorists in psychosomatic medicine concerning the future of this field.
