Book Calendar Chronology and Worship

Download or read book Calendar Chronology and Worship written by Roger T. Beckwith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-01-28 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes as its theme the related issues of calendar, chronology and worship, as they were conceived and practised in ancient Jewish and early Christian times. After a general discussion of the way the three issues are related, there follow six chapters on the calendar, first the standard Jewish calendar, then the Qumran calendar (giving particular attention to the Book of Enoch and the Temple Scroll) and finally the Christian calendar - both the standard Christian calendar and that observed by the Montanists. Three chapters on chronology come next, one of them offering a chronological solution to a puzzling calendrical problem in the Dead Sea Scrolls, another relating Jewish eschatological expectations to New Testament teaching, and a third examining the chronological calculations of the Hellenistic Jew Demetrius, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, and the Book of Jubilees. The three concluding chapters, on worship, include an investigation of the historical development of the Psalter and a careful survey of the relationship between ancient Jewish worship and early Christian. The book discusses a variety of issues that arise in modern biblical, intertestamental and patristic study, some neglected, some very controversial, and throws new light upon them.

Book M el Coluim III Canmore

Download or read book M el Coluim III Canmore written by Neil McGuigan and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2021-06-03 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Saltire Society History Book of the Year The legendary Scottish king Máel Coluim III, also known as 'Malcolm Canmore', is often held to epitomise Scotland's 'ancient Gaelic kings'. But Máel Coluim and his dynasty were in fact newcomers, and their legitimacy and status were far from secure at the beginning of his rule. Máel Coluim's long reign from 1058 until 1093 coincided with the Norman Conquest of England, a revolutionary event that presented great opportunities and terrible dangers. Although his interventions in post-Conquest England eventually cost him his life, the book argues that they were crucial to his success as both king and dynasty-builder, creating internal stability and facilitating the takeover of Strathclyde and Lothian. As a result, Máel Coluim left to his successors a territory that stretched far to the south of the kingship's heartland north of the Forth, similar to the Scotland we know today. The book explores the wider political and cultural world in which Máel Coluim lived, guiding the reader through the pitfalls and possibilities offered by the sources that mediate access to that world. Our reliance on so few texts means that the eleventh century poses problems that historians of later eras can avoid. Nevertheless Scotland in Máel Coluim's time generated unprecedented levels of attention abroad and more vernacular literary output than at any time prior to the Stewart era.

Book Gospatric The Forgotten Earl

Download or read book Gospatric The Forgotten Earl written by Carol Spearman and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-02 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gospatric’s childhood is defined by loss. His uncle, King Duncan I, was killed by Macbeth. Five years later, his father and grandfather were defeated by Macbeth’s forces, attempting to avenge this death. Gospatric and his brother were protected by Siward, the powerful Earl of Northumbria. Gospatric’s adult life and the safety of his growing family was dominated by his cousin, King Malcolm III of Scotland, and William the Conqueror, as plots unfold to take England back for its rightful king. A wealthy Scot pulls together an unlikely team to uncover the truth about Gospatric’s life, his family’s place in history and his supposed early death. How did he become the Earl of Northumbria? Why did his children dominate Cumbria, Dunbar, and most of Lothian? How did he survive the wrath of the Conqueror? Did he die young? This team of three men and one woman, two Scots and two Americans, uncover secrets in both the present and the past. Although this is a work of fiction, it is based on extensive research of Gospatric’s place in history. He was the grandson of Crinan and Bethoc, important eleventh century figures in Scotland, as well as of Uchtred the Bold, the powerful Earl of Northumbria. Gospatric has descendants across the world, who are unaware of their relationship to this forgotten earl.
