Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Worth of Ancient Literature to the Modern World Two other arguments have weighed with persons more re ec tive than those whose-mental attitude I have been describing; and their force must be admitted. Languages - not merely the ancient languages, but languages in general - have too often been badly taught, and the learning of them has therefore been found repulsive by many pupils. The results have accordingly been disappointing, and out of proportion to the time and labour spent. Comparatively few of those who have given from six to eight years of their boyhood mainly to the study of Greek and Latin retain a knowledge of either language sufficient to afford either use or pleasure to them through the rest of life. Of the Whole number of those who yearly graduate at Oxford or at Cambridge, I doubt if at thirty years of age 15 per cent. Could read at sight an easy piece of Latin, or 5 per cent. An easy piece of Greek. As this seems an obvious sort of test of the effect of the teaching, people come to the conclusion that the time spent on Greek and Latin was wasted. Book New Studies of a Great Inheritance

Download or read book New Studies of a Great Inheritance written by Robert Seymour Conway and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Studies of a Great Inheritance: Being Lectures on the Modern Worth of Some Ancient Writers The lectures contained in this volume, though they range over several subjects, are connected by a purpose which was present in them all. They were designed to represent, as far as the conditions of a popular lecture allowed, some of the elements in the work of the great ancient writers, especially those of Rome, which make their study of permanent value; and in particular to indicate as clearly as possible how much in the ethical framework of modern society may be traced directly to their teaching. Among the authors here studied the poet Vergil' has the chief place. Through and from his poetry the main current of gracco-roman influence has passed -to the mediaeval and modern world. Yet for this very reason the lectures devoted to Vergil are by no means concerned with him alone. Indeed, one of their objects has been to correct the natural, but unfortunate, habit of reading what he wrote as if it had no relation to the times in which it was written and to the work of his predecessors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Literature and the Classics This book is a collection of nine lectures delivered in Oxford at the invitation of the Board of English Studies in the winter of 1911 - 12. They were addressed primarily to members of the English School, but in effect to all students of modern literature in the University who cared to hear, from students of ancient literature, something of what the Classics mean in the history of letters. The story of the Ancients and Modems is a story, happily, without conclusion, which has its sequel and its public in every generation. These lectures, here and there expanded, but printed, for the most part, as they were given, are now offered as an instal. Book Classical Studies

Download or read book Classical Studies written by Barnas Sears and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Classical Studies: Essays on Ancient Literature and Art Ancient Literature But the Greek and Roman classics stand at the beginning and at the source of European culture. Nothing can displace them. Homer is the fountain-head of all European poetry and art. There he stands, venerable with nearly thirty centuries, touching his heroic harp to strains of unsurpassed, nay, unapproachable excellence and grandeur. All the features of a great heroic age, -the chivalry of the classical world, - from which European civilization dates, and political and domestic order take their rise, - stand forth in living reality, in his immortal pictures. There he stands, radiant with the beams of the early Grecian morning, as jocund day stands tiptoe on the misty mountain Who is to drive him from his station there! And how, then, is Homer to pass from the memory and the hearts of men? Impossible. It is not a question to be decided by a few petty and short-sighted utilitarian views. Homer's reign is firmly established over the literary world, and if any nation should ever become so barbarous as to banish him from their schools, the penalty and disgrace would be their own. The language of Homer, as a picturesque, melodious, and enchanting instrument of thought, has never been surpassed. Now these great ancients have been, time out of mind, the teachers of the civilized world. They form a common bond, which unites the cultivated minds Of all nations and ages together. He who cuts himself off from the classics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The writings of the Greeks and Romans form the bedrock of Western culture. Inventing the molds for histories, tragedies, and philosophies, while pioneering radical new forms of epic and poetry, the Greeks and Romans created the literary world we still inhabit today. Writing with verve and insight, distinguished classicist Richard Jenkyns explores a thousand years of classical civilization, carrying readers from the depths of the Greek dark ages through the glittering heights of Rome's empire. Jenkyns begins with Homer and the birth of epic poetry before exploring the hypnotic poetry of Pindar, Sappho, and others from the Greek dark ages. Later, in Athens's classical age, Jenkyns shows the radical nature of Sophocles's choice to portray Ajax as a psychologically wounded warrior, how Aeschylus developed tragedy, and how Herodotus, in "inventing history," brought to narrative an epic and tragic quality. We meet the strikingly modern figure of Virgil, struggling to mirror epic art in an age of empire, and experience the love poems of Catullus, who imbued verse with obsessive passion as never before. Even St. Paul and other early Christian writers are artfully grounded here in their classical literary context. A dynamic and comprehensive introduction to Greek and Roman literature, Jenkyns's Classical Literature is essential reading for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the classics -- and the extraordinary origins of Western culture. "There is scarcely anything on which he does not offer an original aperç sometimes illuminating, sometimes simply provocative, but always worth reading... Jenkyns's view of ancient literature is Olympian." -- G.W. Bowersock, The New York Review of Books
