Many were just a bit too exciting, some were horrific and a few were terrifying. This is the true story of his experiences during his 13 months in the war. Book The Adventures Of A Helicopter Pilot

Download or read book The Adventures Of A Helicopter Pilot written by Youlanda Cerny and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-27 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hollywood tends to get military life wrong - and portrayals of helicopter pilots in the Vietnam War are no exception. Despite what you've seen in movies, daily operations didn't always involve pulling troops from a hot landing zone or going in with guns and rockets blazing - and it wasn't always done in a Huey, either. They've faced the dangers of combat, pushed limits, and pioneered advances in combat casualty care. This is episode six in a series of true stories about a young helicopter pilot's tour of duty in Vietnam.

After the war he used helicopters for things no one dreamed possible, carrying out 300 rescue missions and training a generation of Kiwi pilots along the way. Next there was John’s son Bill, who began flying in the early 1970s, during the dangerous venison recovery and live capture years. He’s since restored an Avro Anson Mk I reconnaissance bomber, used in World War Two and the only airworthy craft of its type left in the world. And finally there’s Toby and his wife Rachael, whose helicopter business continues the legacy of 60 trailblazing years in helicopter aviation. Adventure, enterprise and courage ... Download or read book Air America written by Bill Collier and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second edition of his memoir, previously titled "CIA Super Pilot Spills the Beans," former H-34 and Bell Huey pilot Capt. Bill Collier tells of his experiences flying helicopters in Laos for Air America, during the CIA's secret war waged into the 1970s. It was the war correspondent Anne Darling who described the pilots of Air America as "CIA Super Pilots," and as Collier tells of flying in challenging weather and combat conditions with his best Vietnam helicopter pilot buddy, Gary, the pair shared enough adventure to make any novel seem lame. Making fabulous money and having airline benefits allowed them to live an exotic lifestyle, to travel the world on their monthly R&Rs, and to chase and catch more than a few stewardesses from several different airlines.Air America operated an entire fleet of aircraft out of the "secret CIA air base" at Long Tieng. For years it ranked as one of the busiest airports in the world as the CIA supported the Laotian Army in its efforts to repel the army of North Vietnam intent on conquering all of Laos.

Book Apache Helicopter Pilots

Download or read book Apache Helicopter Pilots written by Antony Loveless and published by Crabtree Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These army pilots fly the most demanding helicopter in existence. Only 3% of existing army helicopter pilots qualify to fly it. Trainees have to learn to train their eyes to work independently of each other - while the right eye sees flight and weapons information in the helmet's monocle, the left eye is free to look outside the aircraft and scan for threats and other obstacles. This book lifts the lid on what life is like for these men and women; their training; the aircraft; the missions, and what it's actually like to be under fire while trying to protect soldiers on the ground.

Book The Helicopter Pilot s Handbook

    Book Details:
  • Author : Phil Croucher
  • Publisher : Createspace Independent Publishing Platform
  • Release : 2016-07-02
  • ISBN : 9781534923546
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book The Helicopter Pilot s Handbook written by Phil Croucher and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-07-02 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One problem with helicoptering is that there are virtually no flying clubs, at least of the sort that exist for fixed wing, so pilots get very little chance to swap stories, unless they meet in a muddy field somewhere, waiting for their passengers. As a result, the same mistakes are being made and the same lessons learnt separately instead of being shared - it's comforting sometimes to know that you're not the only one to inflate the floats by accident! Even when you do get into a school, there are still a couple of things they don't teach you, namely that aviation runs on paperwork, and how to get a job, including interview techniques, etc - flying the aircraft is actually less than a third of the job. Another is that nobody really tells you anything, either about the job you have to do (from the customer) or how to do it (the company) - you will always be up against the other guy who managed to do it last week! Sure, there will be training, but, even in the best companies, this will be relatively minimal. This book is an attempt to correct the above situations by gathering together as much information as possible for helicopter pilots, old and new, professional and otherwise, in an attempt to explain the why, so the how will become easier (you will be so much more useful if you know what the customer is trying to achieve). In short, this is all the stuff nobody taught me - every tip and trick I have learnt has been included.

Book Fifty Years Before the Rotor Mast

Download or read book Fifty Years Before the Rotor Mast written by Ben Van Etten and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a memoir of 50 years flying helicopters in a variety of situations. Included are rescues, combat operations, mountain and off-shore flying, medical evacuations, flight instruction and numerous flight missions that require pushing the flight envelope to the maximum. Highlighted are Ben Van Etten's five years as a flight captain with Air America, Inc. in Thailand and the unpublicized war in Laos. During that period the author describes in detail his interaction with other pilots and his "customers," primarily the CIA. The book also includes geographical and historical observations from a first person prospective. And a vivid description from inside the cockpit during many lifesaving missions. This book should tweak the interest of aviators and non-aviators alike.
