This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Spiritual Conquest or Its Conversion to Christ In presenting this volume to the public, its Author would inform every one that book-writing was the last work in which he ever expected to engage. But the subject of the present treatise was so impressed upon his mind, and so kept there by the Holy Spirit, he found that the only way to relieve himself would be to arrange and write upon the same. In doing so, however, it was not at all his intention ever to publish this book himself. But in lecturing upon the subject, and reading over to Christian brethren and friends its contents, right away both the educated and the uneducated, and the members of the different denominations, began to urge its publication. This circumstance, in connection with the fact that the work in which he is engaged is a general one, and hence must be sustained within itself, is one of the principal reasons for its publication. His only apology, therefore, for the publication of the present volume is a deep interest in and an intense desire for God's glory, and the best good of infinitely imperiled and perishing souls. Book The Battle Ground of the Spiritual Reformation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Battle Ground of the Spiritual Reformation Classic Reprint written by S. B. Brittan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle-Ground of the Spiritual Reformation The religion of the Koran was very speedily established throughout Arabia. It carried its conquests Into Syria, and its progress was only arrested by the death Of the Prophet. Mohammed, also, achieved his success by no very gentle means. He inculcated the idea that his disciples were to employ the sword in vindicating the claims of his religion. A paradise of sensual pleasures, and the fellowship of angelic heroes were promised to all who should be victorious in the cause of God and his Prophet. 'suc'h were the means and instruments whereby the Arabian Chief made the conquest of his country, and produced the greatest revolution in human affairs that has occurred since the beginning of the Christian era. But he violated the principles Of justice, and trampled on the rights of human nature. Liberty Of conscience was granted to the Jew and the Christian only on the condition that they would pay for it, while for idolaters there was no alternative but conversion or the sword. When the Prophet, after being exiled for seven years, returned to 1115 native city, three hundred and fifty idols which defiled its famous Pan theon were cast down and broken in pieces, while their wor shipers only escaped destruction by a timely conversion. Book A History of Christian Conversion

  • Author : David W. Kling
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-05-05

Download or read book A History of Christian Conversion written by David W. Kling and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conversion has played a central role in the history of Christianity. In this first in-depth and wide-ranging narrative history, David Kling examines the dynamic of turning to the Christian faith by individuals, families, and people groups. Global in reach, the narrative progresses from early Christian beginnings in the Roman world to Christianity's expansion into Europe, the Americas, China, India, and Africa. Conversion is often associated with a particular strand of modern Christianity (evangelical) and a particular type of experience (sudden, overwhelming). However, when examined over two millennia, it emerges as a phenomenon far more complex than any one-dimensional profile would suggest. No single, unitary paradigm defines conversion and no easily explicable process accounts for why people convert to Christianity. Rather, a multiplicity of factors-historical, personal, social, geographical, theological, psychological, and cultural-shape the converting process. A History of Christian Conversion not only narrates the conversions of select individuals and peoples, it also engages current theories and models to explain conversion, and examines recurring themes in the conversion process: divine presence, gender and the body, agency and motivation, testimony and memory, group- and self-identity, "authentic" and "nominal" conversion, and modes of communication. Accessible to scholars, students, and those with a general interest in conversion, Kling's book is the most satisfying and comprehensive account of conversion in Christian history to date; this major work will become a standard must-read in conversion studies.

Download or read book Conversion written by Malcolm Muggeridge and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-02-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the book: " What is a conversion? The question is like asking, 'What is falling in love?' There is no standard procedure, no fixed time. No Damascus Road experience has been vouchsafed me; I have just stumbled on, like Bunyan's Pilgrim, falling into the Slough of Despond, locked up in Doubting Castle, terrified at passing through the Valley of the Shadow of Death; from time to time, by God's mercy, relieved of my burden of sin, but only, alas, soon to acquire it again." "From my earliest years, there was something going on inside me other than vague aspirations to make a name for myself and a stir in the world: something that led me to feel myself a stranger among strangers in a strange land, whose true habitat was elsewhere, another destiny whose realization would swallow up time into Eternity, transform flesh into spirit, knowledge into faith, and reveal in transcendental terms what our earthly life truly signifies." In November 1982, Malcolm Muggeridge was received into the Roman Catholic Church, an event which attracted much attention and curiosity. To Malcolm Muggeridge, it signified "a sense of homecoming, of picking up the threads of a lost life." Malcolm Muggeridge, well known around the world in the latter part of the twentieth century as a journalist, writer, and media figure, is still remembered as a vociferous unbeliever for a great part of his career. But always he had had an awareness that another dimension existed, that there was a destiny beyond the devices and desires of the ego, and that earthly life could not be the end. This book, first published in 1988 and the last of his writing to be published in his lifetime, is a personal statement of the history and development of his religious beliefs. An important section relates to Mother Teresa of Calcutta, latterly beatified, and with expectations to becoming a Saint. Her influence was perhaps the most powerful force leading this deeply thinking man to God and to the Roman Catholic Church. He describes also the effect upon him of meetings with Alexander Solzhenitsyn, a man whom he considers to be one of the greatest prophets of our time, with a profound spiritual message for our turbulent world. This moving testimony is not about the mechanics of becoming a Roman Catholic. Rather, it is about a series of happenings, occasions of enlightenment, that led one spiritually troubled man to find God. It is a statement of belief which will fascinate all who are interested in the workings of the human mind, and will inspire all who seek the Truth.

Book The Good News of a Spiritual Realm Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Good News of a Spiritual Realm Classic Reprint written by Dwight Goddard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Good News of a Spiritual Realm This book is an interweaving of the Four Gospels into one connected account of the Life and the Teach ings of Jesus of Nazareth, in which the effort is made by free translation and paraphrase to bring out the unity and the reasonableness of his life and teachings from a modern point of view. It has been very unfortunate that Jesus' life and teachings have been so largely studied as a part of the whole history of the Christian Church and Christian dogma. This has in evitably resulted in straining and distorting them out of their original and characteristic simplicity. This screening and obscuring of his original thought began at the very begin ning. Jesus was again and again distressed because his own disciples, who were com paratively uneducated men, failed to under stand and to appreciate the significance of his teachings. Download or read book Spiritual Knowing Or Bible Sunshine written by Theodore F. Seward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spiritual Knowing or Bible Sunshine: The Spiritual Gospel of Jesus the Christ As materialism has its watchword in the phrase the strenuous life, so the other movement expresses its fundamental thought in the process described as spiritual knowing. It is a moderate estimate that there are not less than two million people in America who accept that term as descriptive of their thought and purpose. The strenuous life is the law of material evolution. It results in the survival of the fittest. Spiritual knowing is a process of moral and spiritual development. Its effect is to fit the human race to survive. It is a movement of the people and not of the churches. But it belongs in the churches, and will in time be assimilated by them. It is simply the spiritual gospel of Jesus the Christ, which the people are rediscovering and applying. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
