Book Eternity Is Now in Session

Download or read book Eternity Is Now in Session written by John Ortberg and published by NavPress. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Something in us is waiting—for what, we don’t know. Something different? Something better? For Christians, perhaps the deepest expression of what we’re waiting for is found in the phrase “eternal life.” But what is eternal life? Why do we want it? And how do we know if we have it? In Eternity Is Now in Session, bestselling author John Ortberg dispels the myth that eternal life is something way out in outer space that we can only hope to experience after we die—and that being saved is merely about meeting the minimal entrance requirements for getting into heaven. Instead, John unpacks the reality that the moment we trust Christ, we are initiated into “eternal living” with God as a here and now reality, one that will continue beyond our life on this earth. Jesus defined eternal life just once, in John 17:3: “. . . that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” The kind of “knowing God” that is eternal life is an interactive relationship, not just an affirmation of certain facts about God. Once we begin the transformative journey of truly knowing God, we can start to experience His presence, favor, and resurrection power right here on this earth—in the details, tasks, and challenges of daily, ordinary life. And as we begin to know God this way, we’ll realize each moment of our lives is a vehicle to the eternity we’ve been longing for all along.

Book The Eternal Religion Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eternal Religion Amid the seeming confusions of our time there is, amongst leading minds, growing into ever clearer vision the main lines of the structure which, when fully in view, will be recognised by humanity as the Eternal Religion The earlier theologies were advance sketches which, we are now coming to see, were not only incomplete but, in important respects, were wrongly drawn. We are better equipped to-day than the older framers of systems. We are in a more favourable position for discerning between the evanescent and the permanent, between what are essentials and what are matters of detail. It is the peculiar privilege of our age to have come into possession at once of the entire heritage of the past centuries, with their vast endeavours after ultimate truth, and at the same time of a scientific method for assaying their results. In what I have here advanced I have tried to utilise the advantages of that position. I have kept always before me the idea of religion as at once a principle and a history. Its story, properly considered. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: From "the world's greatest tour guide," a deeply-researched, captivating journey through the rich history of Christianity and the winding paths of the French and Italian countryside that will feed mind, body, and soul (New York Times). "What a wondrous work! This beautifully written and totally clear-eyed account of his pilgrimage will have you wondering whether we should all embark on such a journey, either of the body, the soul or, as in Egan's case, both." --Cokie Roberts "Egan draws us in, making us feel frozen in the snow-covered Alps, joyful in valleys of trees with low-hanging fruit, skeptical of the relics of embalmed saints and hopeful for the healing of his encrusted toes, so worn and weathered from their walk."--The Washington Post Moved by his mother's death and his Irish Catholic family's complicated history with the church, Timothy Egan decided to follow in the footsteps of centuries of seekers to force a reckoning with his own beliefs. He embarked on a thousand-mile pilgrimage through the theological cradle of Christianity to explore the religion in the world that it created. Egan sets out along the Via Francigena, once the major medieval trail leading the devout to Rome, and travels overland via the alpine peaks and small mountain towns of France, Switzerland and Italy, accompanied by a quirky cast of fellow pilgrims and by some of the towering figures of the faith--Joan of Arc, Henry VIII, Martin Luther. The goal: walking to St. Peter's Square, in hopes of meeting the galvanizing pope who is struggling to hold together the church through the worst crisis in half a millennium. A thrilling journey, a family story, and a revealing history, A Pilgrimage to Eternity looks for our future in its search for God.

Book The Illusion of Eternal Religious Law

Download or read book The Illusion of Eternal Religious Law written by Joseph The Monotheist and published by Joseph The Monotheist. This book was released on 2024-09-22 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series that presents an attempt to understand the Qur’anic revelation—published concurrently with the first and second volumes. It continues on the work presented in the first two volumes of this series to propose a new interpretation of the Qur’anic revelation that is claimed to constitute a more accurate representation of the revelation. The first three volumes of this series argue that the religion of Islam or rather the numerous interpretations of Islam are unacceptable representations of the Qur’anic revelation. The proposed interpretation of the Qur’anic revelation challenges the standpoints of Traditional Islam on three key issues: inclusiveness, the sources of religious knowledge, and the composition of any acceptable Qur’anic-based interpretation of religion. Each of the first three volumes of this series is dedicated to one of these topics, respectively. In this book the stance of the proposed interpretation of the Qur’anic revelation on law is addressed. This position will prove to be of special significance particularly in the context of modernity—and the modern state. Furthermore, Islamic law and its relationship to the religion of Islam is explored. The proposed interpretation of the Qur’anic revelation does not see religion to be the source of law, but rather it sees religion to be a source of ethics. It sees that any acceptable interpretation of religion that is based on revealed scripture should have no law component. It rejects religious law altogether and calls for the implementation of secular law. In consequence, the proposed interpretation of the Qur’anic revelation would be redefining the role of religion and its domain of operation. What Islam is the book talking about? Is it one Islam that around one-quarter of the world’s population follows? Are all of the commands in the Qur’an of eternal applicability? What is Islamic law (commonly referred to as Shari’a)? Why study Islamic law and why is it important to study it? Is there only one Islamic law? How does Islamic law relate to Islam? Why does this book call for comprehensive religious reform and not religious law reform? These questions and a multitude of others are addressed in this volume of the series. This book is self-contained. It can be read as part of the series or independently. It does not require the reader to have previous knowledge in any of the topics discussed. The book discusses topics you do not find in your typical book about the Qur’an or Islam. It would interest those who want to learn about the Qur’an, its message, and Islamic law. Among this group would be those searching for a reformed understanding of the Qur’an and how it applies today; those interested to learn about Islamic law—what it is and what it is not; and those interested in monotheistic religions in general. This book will prove to be particularly useful to those seeking to understand the problems in the contemporary interpretations of Islam, and consequently how such problems reflect on the Muslim individual and societies in general.
