Book excerpt: On the beautiful Cape Peninsular, a great house built on the mountainside gazes out on a limitless southern ocean. By 1976 it had become a residential hotel, and Richard Channing, its proprietor, had personal problems more burdensome even than a perennial shortage of funds. Richard was disappointed with life: trapped in a loveless marriage, increasingly alienated from his son, and unable to see a way forward. But then his distant cousin, a lovely young English girl, arrives on what becomes a lengthy and extended visit, and everything begins to change for Richard. At the same time, dramatic events are taking place in South Africa. Only two weeks earlier there occurs a police massacre of black students in Soweto, an event which triggers a wave of country-wide marches, demonstrations and strikes by members of the black and coloured communities. South Africa is engulfed by unrest and periodic violence - not all of which the residents of the great house on its lonely mountainside are able to avoid. Richard, however, is in love. And the outcome of this love, and the consequences of his lovely young cousin’s visit, will take many years before they can be fully realised. For the young English girl’s visit will cause as dramatic a change in Richard’s and his family’s lives, as the Soweto Youth Uprising will bring about in South Africa’s social and political life.

Book excerpt: For three years, the author fished commercially for the mighty Atlantic salmon out of a remote fishing station on the west coast of Scotland, working in what would turn out to be a declining inshore fishery. This book is, in part, a poem to Salmo salar, the fabulous leaper of the title, and is also an account of everyday life in this remote and beautiful part of the British Isles. Book Hector s Juice

Download or read book Hector s Juice written by Peter White and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2011-01-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a great American novel. However, the story of Hector's Juice starts long before America was a country. In fact it starts long before any history was written about anything. It starts at the very beginning of time and fast forwards to evolution and the beginnings of mankind. But evolution also has a spiritual side and that's where Spencer the very first guardian angel comes in. He will take you from the beginnings of man in the Great Rift Valley of Africa to the lime colored gas chamber of San Quentin State Penitentiary in California. From the beginnings of surfing (not in Hawaii) to the gunfight at the OK Corral this is a great American novel that is neither restricted to time or space.

Book Paradise Island Heavenly Journey

Download or read book Paradise Island Heavenly Journey written by Jon Magee and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-12-03 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Kate Hartig writes "In his recently published first book From Barren Rocks to Living Stones Jon Magee recounts his teenage years living in Aden, Yemen, during the mid 1960s. In Paradise Island Jon travels back to an earlier period of his childhood. He reflects on his life as a young boy living with his family in Singapore during the 1950's. He discusses the trials and joy of British military family life living in what was once part of the British Empire. But like Jon’s memoirs of Aden, the 1950s in Singapore was also a period of considerable change as Britain was forced to accept the ending of its colonial powers in far away ‘exotic’ places. But for Jon, it was an ideal childhood full of adventure and new experiences, from new foods to strange plants and significantly new friends that cut across cultural barriers. Today, Singapore presents itself as a modern, bustling cosmopolitan city. With the kampongs (villages) and jungle areas now replaced by high- rise residential apartments and manicured parklands the perception of Singapore as a “paradise island” is possibly difficult to comprehend. But Jon’s memories brings back an earlier time when life was perhaps not so much simpler but different. So different that it was life changing. This story is set within the context of many journeys, Jon’s journey through early childhood, the family’s journeys between Singapore and Britain and most significantly his parents’ profound spiritual journey back to their saviour and God." Dr Kate Hartig (PhD) Jon Magee continues to reveal the wealth of story telling that is based upon life experiences within the world. This book, following on fom the action of Aden (Yemen),now details the search for truth, peace and sense of purpose lived out in Singapore in the 1950's.

Book God Bless the Squirrel Cage

Download or read book God Bless the Squirrel Cage written by Nicholas A. Sarno and published by Green Lantern Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. There comes a time in the lives of people of a certain disposition when following any path other than that of an artist seems unthinkable. They read books with titles like A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and see something of themselves in their pages. They begin painting or writing poetry. They throw themselves into such a life with passion and fury that seems reserved for such an age and then, usually, they stop. They grow up, leaving that life behind them. And yet books wherein the protagonist overcomes all obstacles to become an artist, books where, in the final pages, one learns that the young man or woman picks up a pen and begins to write that very book, books with titles like A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, continues to be written. GOD BLESS THE SQUIRREL CAGE is not one of those books.

Book Stars and Strikes

Download or read book Stars and Strikes written by Dan Epstein and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dan Epstein scored a cult hit with Big Hair and Plastic Grass: A Funky Ride Through Baseball and America in the Swinging '70s. Now he returns with Stars and Strikes, a riotous look at the most pivotal season of the decade. America, 1976: colorful, complex, and combustible. It was a year of Bicentennial celebrations and presidential primaries, of Olympic glory and busing riots, of "killer bees" hysteria and Pong fever. For both the nation and the national pastime, the year was revolutionary, indeed. On the diamond, Thurman Munson led the New York Yankees to their first World Series in a dozen years, but it was Joe Morgan and Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" who cemented a dynasty with their second consecutive World Championship. Sluggers Mike Schmidt and Dave Kingman dominated the headlines, while rookie sensation Mark "The Bird" Fidrych started the All-Star Game opposite Randy "Junkman" Jones. The season was defined by the outrageous antics of team owners Bill Veeck, Ted Turner, George Steinbrenner, and Charlie Finley, as well as by several memorable bench-clearing brawls, and a batting title race that became just as contentious as the presidential race. From Dorothy Hamill's "wedge" haircut to Kojak's chrome dome, American pop culture was never more giddily effervescent than in this year of Jimmy Carter, CB radios, AMC Pacers, The Bad News Bears, Rocky, Taxi Driver, the Ramones, KISS, Happy Days, Hotel California, and Frampton Comes Alive!--it all came alive in '76! Meanwhile, as the nation erupted in a red-white-and-blue explosion saluting its two- hundredth year of independence, Major League Baseball players waged a war for their own liberties by demanding free agency. From the road to the White House to the shorts-wearing White Sox, Stars and Strikes tracks the tumultuous year after which the sport--and the nation--would never be the same.
