Book The World Bank s Prototype Carbon Fund and China

Download or read book The World Bank s Prototype Carbon Fund and China written by ZhongXiang Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first global carbon fund, the World Bank's Prototype Carbon Fund (PCF) aims to catalyze the market for project-based greenhouse gas emission reductions while promoting sustainable development and offering a learning-by-doing opportunity to its stakeholders. Since the inception in 1999, the PCF has engaged in a dialogue with China to get it to sign up as a host country, because the World Bank and other international and bilateral donors expect great potential of the clean development mechanism (CDM) in China and feel the significant need for building CDM capacity in China to enable it to gain more insight into the CDM and increase its capacity to initiate and undertake CDM projects. This paper first discusses why China had hesitated to sign up as a host country of PCF projects until September 2003. Then the paper explains what has led China to endorse the PCF projects. The paper ends with discussions on the implications of the PCF's offering prices for the emerging global carbon market.

Book Climate Change and the World Bank Group

Download or read book Climate Change and the World Bank Group written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011-01-26 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study from the Independent Evaluation Group draws lessons for development and climate change mitigation from the World Bank Group's far-reaching portfolio of projects in energy, forestry, transport, coal power, and technology transfer. Reviewing what has worked, what hasn't, and why, the evaluation's key findings include: Energy efficiency can offer countries direct economic returns that dwarf those of most other development projects, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Tropical forest protected areas, on average, significantly reduce tropical deforestation, preserving carbon and biodiversity. Deforestation rates are lower in areas that allowed sustainable use by local populations than in strictly protected areas. Deforestation rates were lowest of all in indigenous forest areas. For renewable energy projects, long-duration loans have been important in making projects financially viable.. But at prevailing carbon prices, carbon offset sales had little impact on most renewable energy projects rate of returns, and did not address investors need for up-front capital. Technology transfer broadly understood to include diffusion of technical and financial innovations related to low-carbon development has worked well when the logic of piloting and demonstration is well thought out, and when grants are used to mitigate the risk of pioneering efforts.

Book The Prototype Carbon Fund in Latin America

Download or read book The Prototype Carbon Fund in Latin America written by Francisco Fernandez-Asin and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reducing emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases that affect climate change is one of the key challenges facing the international community. The Bank's Prototype Carbon Fund (PCF) provides a framework for action, learning, and research to demonstrate how greenhouse gas emission reduction transactions can contribute to sustainable development, while lowering the costs of compliance with the Kyoto Protocol-the 1997 agreement to cut industrialized world emissions of greenhouse gases. The Latin American and the Caribbean (LAC) Region has a growing number of successful Prototype Carbon Fund (PCF) projects that have yielded useful experience for developing additional projects. This note highlights the lessons learned in the region, to date. The PCF is a public-private fund established in 2000 and administered by the World Bank acting as Trustee. It operates under the clean development mechanism principles of the Kyoto Protocol to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The PCF aims to demonstrate the potential of market-based mechanisms for reducing the cost of mitigating climate change. It does this by buying Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) from projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Bank client countries, particularly projects that replace fossil fuels with renewable energy sources and those that improve end-use and supply-side efficiency. In return for their shares in the PCF, developed country governments and private sector companies receive CERs, which they can use towards their obligations under the Kyoto Protocol or domestic regulations.

Book China Versus The Us World Bank And Imf In Sub saharan Africa

Download or read book China Versus The Us World Bank And Imf In Sub saharan Africa written by Lynne Ciochetto and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-12-07 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely book provides a comprehensive overview of the activities of the major foreign forces active in contemporary Sub-Saharan Africa. Stimulated by the abundance of reports in the media criticizing China's presence in Sub-Saharan Africa, there is an analysis of China's involvement in the region compared to the largest Western players: the United States, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. China has only been economically active in Sub-Saharan Africa since the 1990s, while the United States, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have been active since the 1950s. Indeed, the World Bank has been the major lender for development during the whole period. The book explores how these foreign interests have assisted with, or hindered progress towards, addressing the challenges facing the region. These challenges include high rates of poverty and low levels of human development, loss of political and economic sovereignty, periodic sluggish economic development, government indebtedness, illegal financial flows and corruption, the resource curse, environmental destruction and climate change. The approach is interdisciplinary and emphasises the key development issues: social, economic and environmental sustainability. An audit approach is used to explore changes within China and the West since the 1950s and evaluate their impact on Sub-Saharan Africa.China versus the US, World Bank and IMF in Sub-Saharan Africa is an important reference for academics, researchers and students. It is also written in an accessible style that is suitable for the general reader.

Book China s Emission Trading System In The Transition To A Low carbon Economy

Download or read book China s Emission Trading System In The Transition To A Low carbon Economy written by Shaozhou Qi and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-10-23 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book integrates the theory and practice of carbon trading at home and abroad, focusing on major theoretical and practical issues of establishing an emissions trading scheme (ETS) in China during its transition to a low-carbon economy. First, a theoretical analysis of the relationship between the transformation of the low-carbon economy and ETS is presented. Second, policy design, institutional evolution, market operation and practical effects of the major global ETSs are systematically compared. Third, the theoretical basis, key points, modelling methods, computational simulation, policy options and operational steps for key institutional and designing of policy elements in China's ETS are analyzed individually. Finally, policy recommendations for the top-level design of China's ETS are proposed.

Book Global Economic Prospects 2007

Download or read book Global Economic Prospects 2007 written by World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next 25 years developing countries will move to center stage in the global economy. Global Economic Prospects 2007 analyzes the opportunities - and stresses - this will create. While rich and poor countries alike stand to benefit, the integration process will make more acute stresses already apparent today - in income inequality, in labor markets, and in the environment. Over the next 25 years, rapid technological progress, burgeoning trade in goods and services, and integration of financial markets create the opportunity for faster long-term growth. However, some regions, notably Africa, are at risk of being left behind. The coming globalization will also see intensified stresses on the "global commons." Addressing global warming, preserving marine fisheries, and containing infectious diseases will require effective multilateral collaboration to ensure that economic growth and poverty reduction proceed without causing irreparable harm to future generations."
